Westport Golf Course
Played On 06/06/2023Sadly, horrible conditions have ruined this course
I golfed at Westport last week, and was extremely disappointed. Having played the course numerous times over the past three decades, I have seen it go from its plush conditions of its inception, to disrepair, to overall improvement under Stan Overton's direction, to various shades of further disrepair. The conditions of the course have never been worse. Greens were bad, tee boxes were worse, fairways were lacking a major ingredient -- grass. Sadly, this course is ruined, and it will take a monumental effort to recover. I pity the folks who have homes on this golf course, as there are no positive elements to enhance their home values. Won't be playing this course again unless and until huge improvements are made.
Rocky River Golf Club at Concord
Played On 05/18/2016Slow slog around a damp course.
Played an agonizingly slow 14 holes of golf at Rocky River. The course was in surprisingly good condition in light of a lot of recent rain, with a few fairways limited to cart path only. Nevertheless, is was a very slow round, at least the second half, in spite of a fairly uncrowded course. Went off on #10, and played the first eight holes in about one and a half hours. Then the round ground down to a SLOW pace. A couple of twosomes ahead must have been playing gold balls, because they searched incessantly for treasure. Six more holes took about two and a half hours. I finally bailed after fourteen holes. I'm not the fastest player, but a ranger to speed things up would have been helpful.
Rock Barn Golf and Spa - Jackson Course
Played On 04/20/2016Consistently fair, challenging course
The Jackson course at Rock Barn gets overshadowed by the championship Jones course, but it is a good test of golf. The course is fair, but challenging. The par fours and fives are relatively short for the most part, and the par threes can play fairly long for the most part. The drives on the fours and fives have decent landing areas, but a few holes demand some accuracy off the tee. The greens had been aerated a couple of weeks ago, so they were still a little bumpy, but for the most part, rolled true. The yardages are not marked very well, so be prepared to hunt for distances.
River Oaks Golf Club
Played On 08/02/2015A phoenix has risen.
It has been several years since I played River Oaks (after playing its previous incarnations for a decade and a half). The last time that I was on this course, it was in horrible condition.
Well, the owner has spent a considerable amount of money and time to refurbish the course. What a success -- this course has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. The course was in very good shape, particularly compared to many local courses in the Charlotte to Hickory region. Greens -- very good and true, fairly fast, and extremely consistent (a couple with minor issues, but nothing that affects play). Fairways -- very good. Tee boxes -- good, some a little sparse, but they are juggling the tees to promote growth. Bunkers -- okay, maybe a little inconsistent (some compacted, and needing more sand). Clubhouse -- very nice, such an improvement on the previous trailer. Restaurant/bar -- again, very nice. Practice facilities -- a work in progress. Driving range provides an aerobic workout just to access it -- could use a way to drive down closer to it. Practice green is very good, and representative of the greens on the course.
This layout has always been quite challenging, particularly with elevation changes, some moguls, strategically placed bunkers, and a few blind shots. A long hitter can overpower some of the course by flying some of the trouble spots, while the normal golfer has to be more strategic. In some respects, it feels like a mountain course.
This course is definitely worth the drive to get to it (about 45 min. from Huntersville/Cornelius). The owner is really to be commended -- his labor of love has made this a course that is once again a great place and great value to play. I highly recommend that you give this course a try.
Red Bridge Golf and Country Club
Played On 06/07/2015Continues to impress
Red Bridge continues to impress. This is a very good layout, with challenging holes mixed with some breathers. Greens were in excellent condition, and bunkers were consistently good. It's a little bit of a drive to get there, but well worth it.
Westport Golf Course
Played On 05/02/2015Surprisingly poor condition
Played Westport with three others this weekend. I was so disappointed in the surprisingly poor condition of the course, especially compared to the last time I played it last year. The course is truly suffering from a lack of routine maintenance. Many of the tee boxes were in horrible condition, with little or no grass. Most of the fairways were just as bad, and you had to move the ball several club lengths to find even a small bit of grass to hit from unless you enjoy hitting off of hard-pan. This was extremely sad to see, as the growing conditions this spring have been good as evidenced by other courses in the area. The greens were fairly grainy, but did roll true. Bunkers were okay.
Clubhouse staff were very humorless and sour -- maybe they aren't pleased with the course conditions as well.
Overall, this was a very disappointing course, and I can't recommend it in its present shape.
Rock Barn Golf and Spa - Jones Course
Played On 06/20/2014Jones course outstanding.
Got to play on the Jones course at Rock Barn. It was outstanding. The course is in great condition, the greens were medium speed, rolled true. The pace of play was very good. Look forward to getting out there again when I can treat myself.
Warrior Golf Club
Played On 02/22/2014Challenging course to knock the rust off.
A friend and I played the Warrior 2/22/14. We were both suffering from severe bout of cabin fever, and happy to get out on the course. Snagged a good deal last minute from GolfNow. The Warrior is a fun, challenging layout, and not the easiest course to knock the rust off, but we enjoyed it nevertheless. Course in decent shape. Greens were very good, very fair, although the pin placements were Sunday championship locations. Hard to hit irons off the matted fairways, but that is the same for most courses in the area this time of year.
The Tillery Tradition Country Club
Played On 1/20/2013Great track
This is a great track -- excellent, secluded layout, challenging but fair. Located near Lake Tillery, it is similar in topography to Red Bridge or Tot Hill (without the tricks). Some blind tee shots, so recommend checking out the hole by hole layout on line.
The course features some elevation changes, moguls, swales, and varying green sizes. Greens were a little spotty (seemed about five or six weeks removed from aeration) but rolled true.
Clubhouse is beautiful, too. Highly recommend this course, and can't wait to go back when it is all green.
