A Fun Test

This course in the past has been a premier must play test. I played in a foursome who plays this course quite regularly and we all agreed on our assessment. We definitely see some course deterioration and lack of attention. Areas previously mowed are no longer being mowed. Many places on the course are being overrun with large clumps of crabgrass. Most of the greens have ball marks which previously have not been properly repaired. Don't get me wrong, I will still play the course, but I hope the establishment will take a closer look and see what we were seeing yesterday.

Humble Pie

I let my ego get in the way. I teamed up with a very good 46 year old golfer who consistently hit the ball 250-270 yards from the tips. At 74 years old and hitting my drive a very long 230 yards convinced me by the end that I really shouldn't be hitting from the tips. It was excruciating fun, though, and I didn't slow the "young gun" down because I played fast. We did not get a lot of roll because of the "forever" wet weather we have experienced this winter. The very short grass fairways were somewhat mowed more narrow than they normally would be because of the wet conditions and the rough was a brutal thick 3-4 inches high. Several of the holes required close to 200 yard carries from the tips which was always sporty. The greens were in good shape, moderately quick with plenty of deceptive slopes and undulations. This is a great test for all golfers; recommend you golf this really scenic course if you haven't and I will be back to bring it to its knees.

Dry Course in Wet Weather

This course drains extremely well. While other courses in the area were closed, Teal Bend was allowing carts without restriction on the course. This course is very scenic with elevation changes, mature trees and lots of brush lurking next to fairways and greens. Most of the greens were undulating with significant slope. This course will challenge the skill of all golfers. The course is fun and easy to get to with plenty of parking. An air hose is available to clean your equipment. I wholeheartedly recommend playing this course. Just a final suggestion: more sand in the traps would be great.

A Fun Test

This Billy Casper course is the best I have played on this year. It is in great shape overall compared to others I have played. The course is challenging because of several par fours well over four hundred yards even from the white tee markers. Many of the greens were sloped and undulating as well. The greens were rolling somewhere between a 10 and 11 (my estimate). Water comes into play on a few of the holes and fairway bunkers definitely come into your club selection decision off the tee. Every green that I can remember was well protected by strategically placed greenside bunkers. The water features throughout the course are spectacular. This is located in a Dell Webb retirement community and the amenities are exactly what you would expect them to be, great! The staff and player's assistants were extremely friendly and accommodating. The young ladies driving the refreshment carts insured we were well taken care of arriving just in the nick of time. I highly recommend playing this course as I have already scheduled a future tee time.

A Fun Test

My wife and I finally agreed on something--this course is beautiful. The scenery surrounding the course is striking as well. The number one fairway is wide, but after that, the rest of the fairways are fairly narrow and lined with very mature/tall oak trees. A stream runs through the course and is a factor on nine of the 18 holes requiring thoughtful club selection. Throw in a few strategically placed bunkers and this course offers a test for even the best golfers. Out of bounds definitely comes into play on several of the holes, and with just a slight pull left you will find yourself re-teeing again. The greens were punched just over a week ago and; therefore, a little slow. Seven fairways had significant doglegs and many of the greens were either two or three tiered. I definitely recommend playing this course and I plan on making this a regular stop.

A Cherry of a Gem

This is a course that requires a premium on club selection and shot placement. Driving accuracy off the tee is vital to setting up GIR approach shots. The course is full of large mature trees just waiting to catch off line shots. Most greens are heavily guarded by well placed bunkers. The greens are undulating and fall lines were hard for me to determine (Probably just me). Oh, by the way, there are streams running across the fairways forcing a risk/reward option of laying up or going for it. I played in a light wind and it would be hard for me to imagine playing in 15-20 mph gusting winds. I recommend you try your skill and luck on this course.

My Home Course

First, I must tell you this write-up has a slight slant of being biased. I have been a Players Assistant at this nine hole gem for many years. I don't play the course much anymore for scoring purposes, but do practice there when needed. It is a par 33 measuring approximately 2350 yards. The slope is 106, but don't let that fool you. The course is tight and water is definitely in play on six of the nine holes. Club selection and placement is very important to score well. The greens are the best in the valley. They are sloping and undulating for the most part, but they roll true. I estimated about a 10 on the meter. Emerald Lakes is also a great practice facility often hosting more than one Long Drive Champion.

Open Experience?

The Warrior organization has done a superb job of upgrading every aspect of this golfing gem. They know they have more to do and more is in the works. The course is full of strategically placed water and bunkers. The greens are small with some breaks exceptionally hard to read. Our foursome played the course after a solid week of daily rain; so we were restricted to cart path only. I estimated the greens to be running nine on the meter. Several of the fairways were narrowly mowed and secondary rough high giving you feeling of a US Open. The carts, over a year old, looked like they were just taken out of the box yesterday. The staff and management are super friendly. We ate at the restaurant and the food was great. This course will be a regular stop for our group. You've got to play this course.

It's the sand traps that kill this place along with a lot of other courses like this. When there is no sand it makes it nearly impossible to swing with confidence.

I play this course a lot and have for years but they give no love to the sand, it didn't always be like this. Not sure if it's new management of that their focusing on other upgrades. But losing the driving range sucked too!

Orchard Gem

This 6000 yard course set among the orchards in a rural community was fun to play. I played with a couple who travels a considerable distance because they say the course is never really crowded. The course does show some minor effects from the prolonged drought and early spring. I encountered some patchy areas around the several of the greens and occasionally on the fairway. The greens were predominately small and the breaks extremely subtle. I found myself not playing enough break on several of the greens. Many of the fairways has doglegs; more than I have seen at any other courses. The course is a good test of your short game. I will play it again!

Beautiful Scenery & Wildlife Galore

I have played this course before and it was just as fun again. Just viewing the scenery and wildlife was well worth the two and half hour drive from Sacramento. The wind blew fairly hard and it did lightly rain while playing the round. I was surprised the course was in excellent shape considering drought conditions. I strongly suggest you stay on or very close to the fairways because a lot of rough bare ground lurks.

Beautiful mountain course

Driving accuracy off the tee is a must if you plan to score well. The greens are well protected by strategically placed bunkers, some of which are very deep. Green speed appeared to be about a 10-11. The greens were very undulating with a lot of deceptive slope. Think mountain slope and creeks. There were very few level places on any fairways which were also heavily trapped. Again, the course was beautiful and the staff exceptionally friendly. This was my first time at the course, but I recommend it to any mid level and above golfer and I will be playing it many more times. Unfortunately, I played it on a day when the wind was blowing a steady 30 to 35MPH, so you might want to check the weather. Pace of play was very slow as many golfers were over matched by the course. Many strokes with on going fairway instruction was sometimes frustrating. Still, the positive out weighed the negative.

Alister MacKenzie fun to play

A relative flat course with strategically placed bunkers. Many wide fairways, but off-line shots wound up in the trees necessitating punch outs. Most of the bunkers had a decent amount of sand which has been a rarity lately in the Sacramento area. Considering the drought and water restrictions, the course for the most part was in relatively good condition. The greens had been punched a week earlier making putting somewhat a guessing game particularly when it came to speed. The course was fun to play and I look forward to playing it again. It is a good test for intermediate golfers. The only negative of the round was the 25 gusting to 30 MPH winds.

Fun and Scenic Course

It was raining light to moderate, but by the end the sun was shining. Obviously, there was little fairway roll. Most fairways were narrow and lined by tall mature trees. I must say it is a beautiful course laced with strategically placed bunkers. The greens are small measuring 28 yards in diameter on the average. The greens could use some tender loving care because of golfers failure to properly repair the ball marks. The staff was very friendly and I plan to play this course many more times.

Reggie42, I have read many of your course reviews and I must say I am impressed. Your descriptions and insight of the courses you have reviewed is informative and adds perspective I had not thought of.
You seem to be addicted to golf as much as I am. Would love to catch up with you some time for a round or a coffee to talk about golf. I too like to play Dry Creek and play there about once a week between 12 and 1.

Travis AFB Winds

A flat course with sloping and undulating greens. Some fairways are wide and some are narrow and lined with tall mature trees. Most of the holes are guarded by well placed bunkers. The greens are fairly fast from having previously golfed this course; however, they had just been punched and sanded the day before. The wind was blowing 20-25 MPH which is very common having been stationed at Travis. A fun course that requires shot placement many times.

Golfing in the vineyards

A beautiful challenging course. The greens rolled fast and true. The wind was blowing about 30 to 35 miles per hour and the low overcast finally cleared late afternoon allowing for much warmer conditions. Golfers familiar with the course said the wind could even blow harder when the sun was out and conditions drier. Almost hard to believe. The one negative that was a bit unnerving was the constant compressed air guns detonating randomly in the vineyards to scare away rodents, birds and probably an occasional golfer venturing too far into the vineyards looking for wayward shots. Expect to use every club in the bag. By the way, the scenery in many cases was spectacular with many elevation changes. Bottom line, I had a great time despite the wind and cold.

A hidden gem

This is a private country club golf course now open to the public. It is in great shape. The fairways are relatively wide, but off line shots will find the trees. You can use a driver on most holes, but a couple of holes does require lay ups for positioning over water. I don't remember any of the greens being level. The greens were fast and on one hole a ball above the pin and missing the putt back to the hole was a sure recipe for the ball rolling off the green. I plan on playing this course many more times

Water water everywhere

I believe there is water on 14 of the 18 holes and many strategically placed bunkers. Unless you're well off line, water shouldn't be too much of a factor for most of the holes. The greens were large with considerable undulations and slope. As always, local knowledge would probably shave off 5-6 strokes. The fairways were in good shape. The Colorado Senior Open will be played in less than two weeks and the greens were rock hard and fast. A ball landing on the green would not hold. I still enjoyed the course as it provided a test for every club in your bag. Put this course on your bucket list.

Interesting elevation changes

This is a fun course because of the extreme elevation changes. The course has several high risk high reward holes. The greens were in good shape and some were deceptively sloped requiring your best reading ability. The fairways were somewhat sparse in places. Almost all the bunkers are in need of new sand as they were very hard to the point you could putt out of them. The course is a fair test and I recommend it.

Creme de la Creme of Sacramento

Truly a course as close to being as pristine as possible. You're met at the bag drop off by an extremely friendly person who takes your bag and loads it on your cart. The course itself is a mixture of links, sparse trees and brush and low land marsh with plenty of water. There is more than enough strategically placed bunkers just waiting to catch any slightly off line shots. The course is full of elevations from tee to green with not a lot of level topography. Reminds you of a mountain course. Unique are the two putting greens: one on hole number one and the other on hole number ten. Balls are supplied on the range as well as the putting greens. Leaving the eighteenth, an attendant greets you and cleans your clubs. Obviously, a first class operation run by the Cache Creek Casino.
