The guy in the pro shop seemed almost upset that we did not want carts for an additional charge. The pace of play was decent. We had to wait, but it moved along. The fairways were varied and most slope towards the cement creak. Some of the fairways were pretty good others were a bit thin. The greens were an oddity. They putted slower than they looked, but were extremely hard to read. The ball would not stay on line and would seem to randomly break. Best bet was to hit it firm and aim for the stick.

Fun Course

Got invited to play here by a member. Played Vista/Lakes combo. The fairways were in great condition. The greens had a few more ball marks than normal. Don't know why more golfers are fixing their marks. The group ahead of us fell behind a hole or two and wouldn't pick up the pace. No ranger to keep pace. Everything else was great. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We all enjoyed the day.

Slow golfers

Too many slow players. We waited on every hole and every shot. We were walking and we were still faster than the groups with carts in front of us. After awhile it just got boring waiting for them to clear. Completely killed the day. No fun at all. I just wanted it to be over. The group behind us hit into us even though they could see us waiting on the group ahead. No ranger to help keep pace.

Confusing start

The course is in good condition from tees to greens. (If more golfers could fix their ball marks, that would be great)
The problems began when the course ran out of carts so tee times got all messed up. Groups were waiting well past their tee times waiting for a cart. We were walking so it did not affect our tee time. The Pro shop had us start off on 10 while another group for the same time started on 1 with carts. Some groups, for some unknown reason thought that they were playing the same 9 twice and did not cross over to the other 9. This happened with the group on our back 9 (which was the front 9 normally) They played the same front 9 along with the group ahead of them instead of crossing over to the back 9. This backed up the front 9 (our back 9) Not sure why if your playing 18 that you would want to play the same 9 twice when the course was fully open. I guess they thought since there was two duplicate tee time that they were supposed to play the same half the course while the other tee time played the other 9 twice.
I've noticed that other Sun City courses are doing the two groups per tee time and having one group start on 1 and the other on 10. This just causes more confusion at the turn. If you don't enforce golfers to keep pace, then this practice will just clog things up later. I'm sure that groups that started earlier that day don't like have a group suddenly appear in front of them on 10 either. Or start a new group on 1 when you started on 10 and now have to wait on them. Confused yet? You are not alone.

Players have no golf etiquette

The course is fine. Too bad the golfers are not. No stars were removed from the course review as it is not the courses fault. We played with a two-some who were clueless about etiquette. We were walking the course. They had a cart. Pulled up and immediately starting playing music, ran out in front of your shots, didn't yell fore when hitting into another fairway or near another golfer, taking phone calls while other were teeing off, etc...
I had my ball taken by a group going the opposite direction when my ball was on a hill next to the green we were playing to. The ball was clearly still in my fairway. They drove up, looked for their ball, hit theirs and took mine too. They had to jump over the little creek to take it. The course just came out of over seed and allowed carts if you follow the 90* rule. No one was following the 90* rule. It's too bad the course has to let on players who have no clue and ruin it for everyone else.

Homage to the fuzzy grass

I played this course years ago and the grass was pretty spotty. The course was recently over seeded and is looking nice so we need to pay homage to the fuzzy grass so it will grow in nice and thick. The course is still cart path only. There is new fuzzy grass coming up everywhere. (All hail the fuzzy grass) The greens were pretty good and rolled true. Although they were a bit fuzzy (All hail the fuzzy grass) so your ball lost speed quickly. The rough was mostly dead and gnarly hodge podge of grass and weeds. There are quite a few trees lining the fairways which will gleefully slap your ball away. Play was a bit slow due to the cart path only. We enjoyed the round and the newly growing fuzzy grass. (All hail the fuzzy grass)

Slow City North

Pace of play was awful. 5 hours is not acceptable. This is an easy course. We waited on every shot on every hole. Groups behind us started leaving because of pace. No Ranger to keep pace. Pro shop said the ranger was out there, but we never saw him and the pace was at a crawl. The fairways and greens were in decent shape. Greens a bit fuzzy, but they just went through over seed so not bad really. It could have been very enjoyable, but the slow pace killed it. After the 10-11th hole I just wanted it to be over.

Redonkulous

Conditions are absolutely Redonkulous!!! The greens are hard and cut so low that the ball just rolls off the green. It's like putting on linoleum. This goofy golf course is only thing missing is the Windmill and Gorilla in front of the holes. The fairways are already dormant, dead and cut down to a tight lie. Nearly EVERY group was a five-some.

Good conditions

It had rained a few days before. Conditions on the course were good. Greens were a touch soft from the rain, but putted well. The rough was tougher as it was a bit longer and wet. Very hard to get out of. Pace was excellent.

Greens are a bit dry

The course was in reasonable condition for summer. A few dry spots on the fairways, but not terrible. The greens were a bit bumpy and dry. Some greens had large dead spots, while other were not so bad. Pace was slow. We got stuck behind a 4-some that played slow and didn't care. They were several holes behind the group in front of them. They slowed down even more after the turn. No Ranger to keep pace. I've found this to be common theme here. Maybe because this is a shorter course it attracts slower players. If the course would enforce the pace rule or allow faster player to play through this would be a much more attractive course.

I love these greens!

My friend texted me last night wanting to play golf today. My back was hurting and I really did not want to play at another dried out nearly dead course like so many are at this time of year. We decided to let me pick the place to play. I chose Copper Canyon. Best decision ever! This place was nearly perfect. The greens are the best I have played this entire spring/summer. They putted true and held a line when chipping and/or running up a shot. The fairways were nearly perfect. Everyone I met was friendly and courteous from the gentleman who took my bag to the starter to the people in the pro shop. Very professional. I was very pleased when the starter offered us a couple of divot tools at the beginning of our round. I have several that I use so I didn't need any, but I took them just in case we needed to give them to our playing partners. The greens rarely had an extra divot mark on them anywhere. so handing out the divot tools is a brilliant idea. I really like it when golfers fix their marks. The beverage cart came around twice on the front 9 and twice on the back 9. I highly recommend this course. P.S. My back still hurt, but I had such a great time I hardly noticed.

recovering from aeration

The greens are recovering from aeration nicely. They are still a little long, slow and bumpy. You just have to hit a firm putt and remember that there will be hardly any break. Fairways were ok. There were some burnt out spots which is common in summer time. Still very playable. Pace was outstanding! We cruised through without having to wait.

Tight lies everywhere

My friends got a special deal to play here and one of them lives in the community. Greens were slow and bumpy and do not hold the line. They were recently punched with the small holes, but not filled in with sand. Fairways were cut so thin that every shot is off a tight lie. Good shots ran through the fairway into the junk. The course was hard pan and very dry. We saw on several holes the maintenance guys hosing down the aprons to keep the balls from running off the greens. So your choice was land on the green and risk bouncing off or land on the apron and stick. Carts were old and not in very good shape. This course is touted as being an exclusive club. I'm sorry. I just can't see it.

Slooooow and windy

It was very windy today. Greens are very difficult. The ball just bounces or rolls all the way through. Had a very difficult time keeping the ball on the green. One friend quit after 9 holes due to pace. Too many people searching for their ball like it was grandma's heirloom. No Ranger to keep pace moving. They really need to do something about the greens. Some of the tee boxes were so hard you could barely get a tee peg in the ground. The course desperately needs to mature.

A little slow today

Had a great time. Course was running a little slow today. Seems like everybody from west valley was there today. I was surprised at how many people were on the course at this time of year. Greens varied in speed from one to the next. That made it a bit more difficult. Yes, the cart paths in some areas are torn up and you have to drive over gravel. It's not that big of a deal. The condition of the course is much more important to me that the cart paths.

Windy and gusting

Very difficult day. Winds were constant and gusting. Hitting down wind was awesome. You felt like a PGA player with crushed drives. Going against the wind was rather humbling. Greens were fast and difficult due to conditions. Pace was OK considering. Carts are great. I really like having the ball and club washer on the cart. There was an ice chest with ice which was nice. The beverage cart came around twice on each 9.

Slow and disappointing

The pace of play was painfully slow. No Ranger. It took 2 1/2 hours to play the front nine. It got worse on the back. We were on pace for over a 5 hour round. My group decided to leave when we started seeing two groups waiting on the tees.
First couple of Greens were in good shape. All other after that went downhill fast. Fairways were thin and dry. Some areas were dead. We were very disappointed after we had heard this was such a good course. We won't be back.

Hello. Thank you for reviewing the course. We apologize for the delay of play during your round. This is by no means the standard we strive to achieve. We work hard to accommodate everyone who visits our course and to best control pace allowing everyone to finish in a reasonable amount of time. We will continue to look for ways to improve, and we are glad to see you rated the course conditions to be great during your game. Thank you for playing The Duke at Rancho El Dorado. We hope to see you again soon.

Very Disappointing

The course is in rough shape. It still hasn't recovered from the aeration of the greens. Fairways are kind of iffy, some were ok but other were patchy. Biggest disappointment was the pace of play. We waited on every shot and on every hole. It was brutally painful. There was no Marshal to keep pace. Absolutely killed the day for us. Groups were backing up waiting. We watched a group give up and just head back in. It is very unlikely I will be back under these conditions.

Low price only

Overall poor conditions. Greens are terrible. Ball marks everywhere. Putts do not stay on line as they bounce their way to the hole. Good tee shots are punished as the fairways are thin and do not hold a shot. I had several drives that went somewhat down the middle of the fairway and over the top of rises only to find the ball all the way to the right or left depending on the slope. The rough is cut low almost to the dirt. The ball just rolls down to the bottom. Poor etiquette by fellow golfers. I had two balls on different holes taken by other golfers who came into my fairway and played my ball because they didn't find theirs. Guys identify your ball before you play it. If you see a ball in a fairway other than the fairway you are playing……maybe it is the golfers PLAYING THAT HOLE. The only good thing was that the price was reasonable for late afternoon.
