Diabolical Green Speeds

Green speeds are insanely fast right now. I’ve played this course before and have never played green speeds this fast. Fastest greens I ever played which made the round extremely difficult for an amateur like me. I consider myself a decent putter, Arccos has be putting on average like a 3 HDCP. 20’ putts with 1% slow you would have to hit 10’, it was insane. 3%-4% slopes were rolling back down hills. With such fast speeds, the subtle breaks consistently had playing partners putting the ball past holes by 10+’ and often times just off the green.

Pace was decent 4.2, would play here again cause the fast green speed isn’t the norm.

They allow 5s

They allow 5 again here so PoP is slow. We tried to get an early tee time and had an 8:30 time, but it still took us almost 5 hours waiting on every shot. I could only imagine how bad it will be for anyone much later in the day.

With the 5s you need to tee off super early here to make a decent time, otherwise prepare for those dreaded 5 hr+ rounds on weekends moving forward like how it was pre-Covid.

Extremely Slow PoP

We use to play this course a lot precovid and I keep my handicap actually at this club. Today was probably the best I have ever seen the conditions at La Mirada. The course got into really bad shape during covid when they had single carts for everyone, but it is in great shape now. Greens a bit sandy still but usually they are battered with divots and they were reasonably clean of them today.

However, the PoP was the worst I've experienced in years. It took 3 hours to play the front nine and the only reason why it didn't take 3 hours on the back is because groups were leaving. In fact, two people in my group left at hole 8 and 10 due to pace. We didn't wait extremely long in between shots when we were playing the hole, typical 4.5 hour pace. However, every tee box would get backed up with 2 groups and every par 3 we reached had 3 groups and one time 4 groups waiting.

This course allows fivesomes and spaces tee times 8 minutes apart. Far too little time in between to accommodate a reasonable pace of play. The starter at least mentally prepared us and told us it was going to be slow and that is how it is there all the time. 5 hours minimum for our round expected but on weekends typically 6 hours. Slower than usual I guess for 12:40PM tee time cause it took us 5 hours and 40 minutes.

I would not play here again unless I have a 7AM tee time or earlier to ensure a reasonable pace. If you don't care about pace, the course is in great shape.

Super Slow Pace

Played on 12/26 with mid morning tee time. Tee'd off late as they were behind. Waited on almost every tee box with two groups. We've played here before but it was ridiculously slow, took 6 hours to finish the round.

Saw cart girl 3 times in front nine, zero on the back nine which seemed odd. I think she is new cause she won't stop for people hitting on the tee box and will drive by you without asking if you need anything. We can't stop yell and stop you if someone in our group is hitting, so please wait.

This place is farther to get to from OC and never had a slow round like this before. I expect it is due to people who don't normally play golf, trying to play for the holidays. In any event, probably will not be playing here for awhile. 6 hours for a round is just insane, its only happened to me like 1 other time in 10 years.

Challenging course when playing the first time

The course is quite challenging if you have not played it the first time. Blind shots and undulated greens where if you do not hit to the right spot, will absolutely punish you.

Course is in good condition except a lot of the tee boxes are very bare.

This was the first time playing this course in good weather and we really liked it. However, we probably won't come back as often due to an interaction with the marshal. We were first approached by the marshal to speed things up as the group in front of us was two holes in front. Grant it, they were a twosome and it was open in front of them, so they had no issues catching the group in front of them. We were three, so we couldn't necessarily keep the same torrid pace of the group in front. We said we'll try and catch up because we didn't check how fast we were playing.

Hole 5, he approaches us again and tell us that the group in front is a hole and a half in front of us and to speed things up again. Here, my friend got into it with the marshal. We would definitely speed things up if the group behind us was pushing us, but we haven't seen them at all the first 5 holes. On top of that, we finished the first 5 holes in 1 hour which I believe equates to a 3:45 pace. We weren't playing as fast as we normally do because this was essentially the first time we played the course and had to decide what to do. Anyway, we caught the group in front by hole 7 and was subsequently waiting for shots from time to time as pace slowed down.

Totally understand what the marshal was asking, but his wording was poor. His wording implied we were playing too slow even though we had completed the first 5 holes in an hour. It aggravated my playing partners tempos and subsequently we all hit a few poor shots because of it (yeah, we are mentally weak). Had he only asked we speed it up even though we were doing a decent time, I think it wouldn't have come across as harsh.

All in all, it was a nice course to play outside from the expectation of PoP here. I'm glad they push but if were doing a sub 4 hour pace mid morning, I think were doing pretty good. Especially since the entire 18 holes, we never saw the group behind us.

Worst course conditions I’ve seen

I haven’t played this course since December. It’s the worst I’ve seen this place and I don’t remember it being this bad.

Tee boxes are beat up, hard to find a spot to put my tee down on grass on some of these tee boxes. Fairways and rough are crap shoots if you’ll get a good lie. All bunkers are hard pan. Greens have pitch marks everywhere.

I had also called in advance to find out covid rules if it is single rider or two to a cart. Pro shop told me same household will share and non household will be single rider. Get there and it’s not single rider, they made our group share carts. Not a big thing, but should get on same page with their rules.

Don’t think I will ever return here, reminding me of Links of Victoria style course but at least there their greens are well maintained.
