Pine Hills Country Club
Played On 04/29/2017Great course layout
Played in a two round tournament with some buddies and was really surprised by this course.
When you drive in it's nothing spectacular. It's a so-so clubhouse and the driving range looks beat up. I go to the range and realize the distances of the markers are wayyyy off. So I wasn't expecting much.
The course layout here is great. I thought most of the holes were very interesting with tee shots that made you think a lot. The course has a mix of long and short par 4s. The par 5s are challenging but reachable if you hit a great tee shot. The par 3s have a good mix too of easy and hard. Overall I would say the layout was the best part - definitely fair but challenging.
Some issues - The greens were aerated 2 weeks ago and were still really holey. I thought that would have been in better shape by then but normally wouldnt have been a problem. There are some dirt patches near greens which I hate. No one like chipping off rock/dirt.
Overall a fun course with decent value.
Ballyowen Golf Club
Played On 04/09/2017Great first time playing this gem...
Came to play a round to kick off masters Sunday and was glad I made the long drive our to this course. It's a great looking facility with a friendly staff. The clubhouse is smallish, but the bar is a nice place to have a pint. The range is grass which is a big plus.
The course looks great and has a extremely fun layout. Shots off the tee require accuracy, but you do get rewarded when you hit your spot. The greens were receptive and putts rolled nicely. The par 3s are very memorable with water coming into play on 3 of the 4. The par 5s are great risk reward holes with none being too out of range after a proper drive.
The only issue was after the winter the fairways were extremely soggy. Many balls actually plugged almost completely underground... this made it pretty difficult to find your ball! This normally wouldn't be a problem - I've heard the course can play fast and firm in the summer.
The Reserve at Orange Lake Resort
Played On 02/25/2017Horribly Run Facility
I have to say that this is the most poorly run course I've ever played. My brother and I arrived early for our 750 am tee time. We had our clubs shippped from NYC to their location via ship sticks. This apparently was a massive burden on the customer that they had no interest in solving....
I was informed that although the clubs are brought to the pro shop... they actually bring all club shipments to their maintenance facility. I was told I had to drive 10 minutes to a mysterious maintenance and LAUNDRY facility used by the resort. The staff couldn't help... I had to clean up their stupid process. We arrive at the maintenance facility only to find it doesn't open until 8 am.... our tee time was at 750. I called the pro shop to send someone down he said there was nothing he could do. I asked them .... shouldnt you open earlier knowing people ship their clubs here AND also play before 8 am.....duh.
We notified them to push back our tee time. They made 0 effort to accomodate us when we approached the first tee. They made us wait for a window when a group was late. The starter literally told us we may have to miss our afternoon 18 tee time.
The course itself is in very poor shape. Dirt patches on the green and tee boxes. I didn't feel like I was at a resort but a local muni. Overall there is no reason to play this course with so many great golf courses in the surrounding area.
TOTAL GARBAGE
Great Rock Golf Club
Played On 10/12/2016Good course that offers a different experience
Great Rock is a fun course that is USUALLY in good shape and provides a different challenge than other courses on LI.
The holes aren't long, but you do need to be accurate or else balls will be in the trees. I've seen the greens roll extremely fast at times in the middle of the summer. This makes the course much more challenging as two putting can be challenging even if it's not a very long putt. The way the course is laid out creates opportunities for birdies and blow ups. Makes it fun for all.
Biggest problem is this course had no amenities. They did not have their liquor license so there was no cart girl providing drinks.... even water would be nice. You can only golf here.... that's it.
Marine Park Golf Course
Played On 06/15/2016Best NYC Muni
This is by far the best NYC muni course I have played. All the other courses near the city are extremely cramped, short, and the pace of play is unbearable. This is actually a real golf experience with manicured greens and tee boxes. The pace of play is poor, but it's nothing like douglaston or any of the other queens courses.
Definitely recommend for anyone in the city who doesn't want to shell out a membership or $250 for point ferry.
