Palmetto Golf Club
Played On 04/06/2016Beautiful Old Course
I wish modern course architects would visit this course and take a few notes. While the layout is not overwhelming it is challenging and will test your shot shaping skills. If you've never played here before, make sure to hire one of their caddies, shot placement both off the tee and on the greens is critical. I have probably played at least 50 different courses in South Carolina is this is my favorite by far. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The fairways were in good shape and the greens are some of the best I've ever putted on.
Treyburn Country Club
Played On 08/15/2015Another Fazio Masterpiece
Treyburn has to be one of the most "lush" courses I have played this year. From tee to green there is nothing to complain about. The ball feels like its on a tee waiting to be hit when sitting in the fairway. The greens roll moderately fast for this time of year and the lines are true. You will hit every club in your bag and the elevation changes really add character to the course. One of my favorites!!
Cape Fear Country Club
Played On 08/14/2015Great Old Course
It is great to play a Donald Ross course and this one doesn't disappoint. The layout is great, the bunkers are penal (as they should be) and the greens roll true. My only problem with the course is they had "punched" the fairways about a week before we played. That is the only reason I gave the course conditions 4 stars. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.
Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point
Played On 07/18/2015Hidden Fazio Gem
I've played Old North State several times and always look forward to going back. The course is challenging but fair. The staff and facilities are excellent and the views are amazing (holes 16 - 18 are breathtaking). A must play course!
Providence Country Club
Played On 05/20/2015Not Worth The Time
First time playing this course. The "mats" at the driving range are worn down to bare rubber in some spots. The course was in average condition and the layout is average at best. Nothing special to see here.
Double Eagle Club
Played On 05/01/2014Double Eagle Is Excellent
Double Eagle is a private, invitation only, club. I played the course as part of of business group. Upon arriving, the club management greeted us at the club entrance. They immediately took all of our shoes, cleaned them, and replaced the spikes. They are cautious to not let anyone bring in any foreign grass. We were then excorted to the locker room. It was impressive to see the lockers of Urban Myers, Tom Weiskopf, and Archie Griffin. At the driving range we were assigned our caddies for the day. The condition of the course was great and the course was challenging. The caddies were very helpful and friendly. The greens rolled great and held their lines. From the locker room attendant, caddies, wait staff, pros, and club manager each person made you feel like a member. Definitely one of my Top 5 golf experiences.
Magnolia/Dogwood at Callawassie Island Club
Played On 04/11/2014Callawasie Island - Take A Pass
I played Callawassie Island with a group of 7 others. We played May River (great course) two days prior. When we arrived at 7:15am for our 8:15am tee time, they didn't even have the range open yet. We waited around 40 minutes for them just to get some range balls for us to hit. While waiting we decided to go to clubhouse and have a quick breakfast only to find out it didn't open until 11:00. On the course, the greens were fantastic but the rest of the course was just average. There were no beverage carts during our play and since the clubhouse didn't open until 11:00, there wasn't anywhere to grab something to drink even at the turn. When we finished our round we went to clubhouse to grab a quick lunch. I asked the waitress what was the quickest sandwich I could get as I had to leave and catch a flight. She said a club sandwich would be the quickest and they would have it ready in 10 minutes. After waiting 30 minutes for the sandwich I had to leave to catch my flight. Definitely not worth the time and won't be going back.
May River Golf Club At Palmetto Bluff
Played On 04/09/2014Master's Prep Round
I played May River the day before we headed down to The Master's. Upon arriving, the club house is very unassuming. The staff that greeted us was very friendly and offered valet parking. Our four caddies met us on the driving range and offered suggestions for shots that we would need on the course. We found after starting play that the practice green replicated the actual green speeds exactly. Our caddies were very friendly and offered the correct advice at the right times. The course was in great condition. The fairways were lush and the lies were perfect. The greens have a lot of slight breaks that are hard to pick up but this is where the caddies were great. The course is challenging and you will hit every club in your bag. Don't skip eating here, the food is fantastic!
Your comments on Callawassie Island are unfair since they focus on whether or not it has a cart girl or whether the restaurant is open at 7:15 for breakfast. Callawassie is a private community and you were fortunate to having been able to play there. The need for a restaurant at a private course is determined by the membership and not by the needs of rare outside play. Callawassie has the best greens in the Hilton Head area and possibly in all of South Carolina. The remainder of the course is not "average", but outstanding.
