Squeezed in an extra round

Visiting area on a buddy golf trip. Made a last minute decision to play 18 on a sunny but cool afternoon around 130pm. Matched up with some nice people. Very friendly staff. Pace of play overall was not too bad. Course conditions for time of year were acceptable. Course has some demanding shots which added to the fun/challenge. Decided to only play 9 as temps got cooler. Fun course to play.

Single player at Magnolia Landing

Found course on GolfNow. Arrived in time to take advantage of driving range which is into a pond. Balls could use updating. Course played a bit soggy. Tee box and fairway grass were a bit shaggy but generally very healthy. Greens were soft but ran surprisingly quick. I was told things get trimmed up once the busy season hits in January, but then so does the price. Interesting course layout providing a mix of shots. Teamed up with another single and a couple and enjoyed the entire round which we finished in just under 4 hours. Drove from north Naples area so approx an hour. I would definitely play again if I was within 30 minute drive. Decent value overall.

Relaxing round of golf and a very nice course

Very enjoyable course to play. Friendly pro shop staff, starter and beverage cart. Wide fairways let you rip it off the tee. Water in play on many holes but not overly punitive. Good conditions in fairways, bunkers and greens. Large greens with some slope and average speed. For $80 green fees would expect GPS on carts. Played as a twosome mid afternoon on a Sunday - finished in 3 hours which was a real treat especially given peak season (maybe everyone was watching. March Madness). Overall good value and would play again.

First time player on Old Corkscrew

I had heard many good things about this course including how challenging it plays. Without a doubt I would say you should expect to shoot 5-10 strokes higher than your normal score. Critical to put aside your ego and play the right tee blocks for your level of play. For the most part the trouble is right in front of you. My impression was the course has a northern Michigan feel to the layout, especially with type of vegetation, the water hazards, bunkering and elevated greens. Course conditions overall were very good given the amount of public play. Tee blocks were in good shape. Nice lies in the fairways. Well placed bunkers were thin and not overly well maintained but still very playable. Greens were in good shape and rolled well. Not overly fast as some Florida courses but given the slopes on the greens the speed felt about right. Beverage cart came by a few times which is always appreciated. Check in at bag drop was smooth and friendly. Pro shop staff very efficient and friendly. Pre round chicken salad sandwich was outstanding. Speed of round was slow at 4 hours and 40 minutes but all things considered, a great way to spend an afternoon. Matched up with 3 other folks who were very enjoyable to play with. This type of course would be a challenge to every level of golfer and in my opinion is a must play for all in the area. From a value perspective, I was pleased with my $100 on line rate - certainly a superior golf experience compared to many other courses in the region at that price point. Not sure I would feel the same for the normal rate that goes up to $190 this time of year. If you have the time and dont mind being humbled, add Old Corkscrew to your golf plans. Enjoy!

Good public access course

Panther Run is a good test of your golf game. Generous landing areas on tee shots offer opportunities to go for it. Shots in to greens require more precision as slopes and large putting surfaces can test your touch. Green speeds very good and putting surfaces are very smooth and true. Tee boxes a bit thin on grass. Fairways in good overall condition. Layout is very interesting and keeps your attention. Good options on tee blocks to play a multitude of lengths to match your game. Had a great discussion with Herb in the pro shop and felt very welcomed. Super practice area. No cart on the course on our visit. Halfway house was good. Sandwich was average, beer was nice and cold. A bit of a drive to get to the course but overall I would certainly recommend playing this course. Did see a lot of wildlife including a gator.

Round on Hilton Head

A little confusion that GolfNow should clarify when you are making your booking. On Hilton Head there is Palmetto Dunes Arthur Hills course and Palmetto Hall Arthur Hills course. Very different courses. We booked and drove to palmetto Dunes only to be told our booking was at Pametto Hall - the Pro Shop attendant told us this happens several times a day and they even had preprinted directions to the other course.

The Palmetto Hall course was ok. Challenging layout. Average conditions. Good green complexes. We were able to get out ahead of a large group so pace of play was reasonable. Pro shop did not inform us there where no beverages or snacks available on course. Water was supposed to be very 3rd hole but that was not the case.

For $70 for 18 holes I would suggest there is better value available in the area and would look elsewhere next time.
