Santee National Golf Club
Played On 11/25/2018Perfect Dayton and for golf
Call it luck of the draw but it was a day when every thing just went right. The weather was perfect, no wind, sunshine, mid sixties. The course was a little wet in spots but manageable and otherwise perfect. We were able to play at our pace without ever having to wait or feel pushed. The greens were medium/fast, in great shape and rolled true. I know I played way above my pay grade hitting fairways and greens with such pinpoint accuracy that I had to pinch myself from time to time. I obviously left with a smile and a memorable round of golf. Just wonder why I can’t play like this every time.

My wife and I drove over from Charleston for a 9:30 tee time and we were able to get right out. This is a 9 hole course x2 for the round. Not a particularly long course but a number of strategically placed dog legs requiring a fade or draw for short iron approaches. Shots from a fairly deep 2nd cut will challenge. Pretty hilly for the low country so it will require adjusting club selection from the fairways. The fairways were pretty good considering the amount of rain we have had over the last 6 weeks. Greens were able to hold balls, rolled true and in average+ condition for a semiprivate course but I felt they were a little on the slow side. My only complaint, this being a 9 hole course when we made the turn things started to back up and we observe several groups jumping ahead which managed to slow pace of play even more. That said I believe this probably doesn’t happen on weekdays. I certainly intend to play here again during the week. I could not get my garmin to lock in although it recognized the course so a rangefinder will really help you dial in on the pin.

Really enjoyed this course. We made the 75 mile trip from Charleston I-26/I-95 for an 8:53 tee time. We arrived about an hour ahead and the staff allowed us to immediately get out ahead of 2 foursomes. That made for a great day without any waiting. The fairways were well maintained with very few tight lies. The rough was well maintained and cut a little shorter than most courses we play. A fairly flat course provided for mostly even lies. The greens rolled true and were about an 8. Most were side protected but offered wide approaches. Average number of doglegs but most were drivable. Some lateral water that was avoidable with well placed drives. The bunkers were soft and well maintained. We managed to get in 27 holes and our scoring went way down on the last 9. It might have simply been the day of the week but we felt as if we had the entire course to ourselves. I’m not suggesting the course is without challenge but there is enough forgiveness that it is well suited to all levels of ability. One thing I did find unusual was their no walking at any time policy. That goes for members as well. The cart paths are concrete and there are a number of areas that could use some attention. The carts are reliable but showing some age and wear I suspect as a result of that no walking policy. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our round and will certainly plan another trip.

The first time I played this course I knew I would be back. I hear other players comment on the challenge of the architecture. This course just works for me. If you can play in control you can score well. This course demands it. Can't wait to get back for a 3rd round.

After having read a number of reviews my regular golf partner and I ventured up to Summerville to check it out. We were pleasantly surprised. We are both mid handicappers and found the course offered a fair but not unreasonable challenge for our level of play. The fairways and greens were very well maintained for a semi-private course. Better than many other comparable public courses in the tri-county area and the green fees were very reasonable. Well placed drives will reward as much as poor ones will punish. I would recommend buying the yardage book available in the pro shop. It will save you a few strokes. Staff was very friendly. We'll definitely be back
