Withington Golf Club
Played On 02/09/2019Beware of the sting in the tail!
An excellent easy walking parkland course, with the best greens in the area, well presented all year round and the toughest finish in South Manchester.
The course puts a premium on driving accuracy with many tree lined fairways Whilst not excessively long the course is hard to score well on especially on the back nine.
There is gentle start with a par three of 155 yds but its all carry with a stream and bunkers protecting the front of the green.
When you get to the fifth par five, there is danger on every shot with out of bounds left off the tee, and a decision to be made on the second shot for the bigger hitters to carry the picturesque pond or lay up.
The eighth is a 180 yd par 3 with a severely sloping green, correct club choice is key here .
The 13th and 14th have the river Mersey bank on the right waiting to collect wayward drives
We now approach what Withington call "The Stretch" the most testing finish to any course in the area. A 575 yd par 5 16th followed by two 440 yd par fours with tight tree lined fairways. Its very easy to finish with three bogeys or worse.
The pro staff manged by Steve Marr are friendly and welcoming, and the the ground staff do a great job maintaining this course in good condition year round.
The members are renowned for the welcome and friendliness to visitors and this is continued by the bar and catering staff in the clubhouse. A warm welcome is always guaranteed here, even if a bogey free card isn't!
