Unplayable Conditions

I have played Crystal Springs for 25 years. I have never seen the course so wet and unplayable as yesterday. I figured 5 days after the last rain we have had that the course would be ok, especially on the clearest, warmest sunny day we have had i weeks. But we got no farther than the first fairway, where we lost 2 of three drives, all hit in the fairway, that the course was a total quagmire. The only thing we were told in the pro shop was that it was cart path only...no kidding Sherlock. After cutting back to Pinnicales and other balls we did not care about, and losing a total of 8 balls between the 3 of us, we quit after 9 holes. The pro shop, to their credit did give us a rain check for 9 holes. But it would have been nice if they had been more forthright ahead of time. Now I`m probably not going to play there for at least until summer.

Too bad you weren't better informed by CS. Keep in mind this area has received no less than 22 inches of rain since October and unfortunately CS being an older track, drainage is not what most of us would like. Glad you got a rain check for a partial round.

Wait `til You See these Greens

I had a buddy come in to visit me from Canada and he wanted to play golf and visit some wineries one day. So we booked into Chardonnay and had a great experience.

It helped that I played well and almost aced the par 3 8th, but, although I hadn`t played here in many years, I was reminded that CGC has some of the largest green complexes around. Many greens are 40-60 yards deep and oddly shaped where you need to hit to the right part of the green. We even had 2 flop shots from the green surface in our group.

The most extreme green is one on the aformentioned par 3 8th which has a 70 yards long (or wide, depending on how you want to look at it) boomerang green...fun, but not unfair.

The course condition was excellent and the staff was helpful (even were able to charge my i-phone for me). Plenty of room off the tees makes it good for the whole group,

An excellent golf option in wine country,,,

Could be a Gem

Lincoln Park GC could be a gem. It is a shortish, sporty course on which 4 is a possible score on every hole. There are a lot of short par 4`s, one short par 5, but long par 3's. After an easy time for 15 holes, the last 3 are tough including the 240 yard par 3 17th with great views on the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. It's easy enough for all abilities to enjoy, but a challenge for highly skilled golfers to score well.
Unfortunately, the condition of the course is poor to fair. It would be great if the City could take some of the money coming in from Harding Park and upgrade Lincoln. With great conditions, it could be a mini-Cypress Point in the heart of SF.

Greens and Carts?

Pajaro is a fun, sporty track and they often have very good deals (we paid $30 w/cart on GN). But the greens, which the course says have been named the "best in Monterrey Co." on their phone message, were hardly that and I have seen them in much better shape in the past.
I also, extraordinarily, would say their carts need work. The first cart I was given had almost no brakes which I found out when I went out to the parking lot to get our clubs and wound up over a curb and in a bush. The second cart I got had a lot of play in the steering wheel and made for an exciting day of driving around the course.

What`s with the Greens?!?

I have played PA for years. And while the greens are usually good to at times excellent, they are presently not in very good shape. There were alot of inconsisent rolls and those putts that break several times on the way to the holes.
They are also starting to prepare for some major work to the course and there are some sandy areas in play (like in the landing zone for the tee shot on 16) that appear to be temporary greens in the making.

For $17, Thumbs Up

My brother and I headed out to RR after scoring a $17 hot deal for a nice Thursday afternoon round in November. We were reminded that we really like to course design given the thinking and strategy needed on each hole. That said, most everything is right in front of you, with a few exceptions.

I guess it helps that I have played well at RR each of 3 times I`ve played there.

Go on out...You'll enjoy.

Nice, Sporty Little Track..

I have enjoyed many a nice afternoon/evening round at Poplar Creek. It`s a fun, sporty track with a mix of some challenge and ego-boosting holes. The wind, especially in the afternoon, is very much a part of the experience. The par 5 1st plays straight down wind which makes for a good start. But the par 4 2nd, doglegging back into the teeth of it makes up for it.
If you`ve had a rough start, 6-8th, a series of short par 4`s gives you the chance to get back on track.
The back 9 presents some tougher, longer par 4s on 10, 13, and 16, the latter 2 back into the wind. Even the short par 4 18th is no guarantee of a happy ending.
While the overall condition of the course is usually good, sometimes it`s better and sometimes its worse.
