Decent Fun

Thank god this global warming business is a bunch of hooey. I mean 20 straight days of 100 degrees happens all the time right? Well a lot of courses are suffering the consequences with burnt out fairways but this one is doing well considering. The greens are slow and bumpy but it was 12 noon so maybe that and the extra water needed is the reason. They rolled fairly true I just couldn’t find the right pace so probably on me for putting so so for a normally good putter. Tough from the blues and long especially into the wind. Shot 85 so maybe the whites next time. After all we’re just out to have fun right? Overall I enjoyed it and worth it if you buy through GolfNow. Now we just need an ice age.

Great High Desert Golfing

Apple Valley Golf Course has a really interesting history and many celebrities played the course back in the 50's and 60's. It's really fun to play a course with such a celebrated pedigree. The great professional golfer, US Open and 36 PGA Tour winning Lloyd Mangrum was the pro there from the 50's through 1973 and the course was private for many years but now it is a public course. I would say it's the best course in the high desert with a relatively simple but scenic layout that is deceptive in it's challenges. Right now the course is in fantastic condition with excellent greens, nice full fairways, groomed bunkers with real sand and the rough is lush. Overall this is well worth the trip if you're not from the area.

Desolation & Dirt

Well....it was too good to be true...the $18 to play on Labor Day that is. The reason was obvious as soon as you made the turn into the complex: Total desolation and dirt for fairways as you drove by the first hole and a lot of construction on the former really large and nice driving range. This course was never in an ideal location, right in an industrial area and right next to and within smelling distance of the water reclamation plant. But, and a major but, they cared about this course and it was always in very good shape with special attention to details and operated by people who loved golf and its traditions. All gone now and I understand that the course is shutting down as another one, and with these conditions the golfers too, bites the dust...literally as that is what you see and taste everywhere, dust. Trophy bass in small ponds are being allowed to die off, greens are mottled and badly damaged in many places; I expected a bulldozer to pop out somewhere to begin work to level the place at any moment. I never thought I'd see a worse course than Riverside Golf Course as it was being allowed to die but this one has it beat. Wow. And sad. Stay away even if the 1/2 off sale sign goes up, you will not be happy and I think its time to just pull the plug and play taps here. "Move along, nothing to see here folks, move along."

Fast Times At Green Tree

Played as a single and ended up playing a lonely round by myself. When it's a hot day it's hard to get as motivated when you're solo but for $18 on Golfnow you just can't complain. Course was in good shape lush and green and wet. Greens were true but a little slow but overall conditions are just fine except many bunkers were flooded though not sure if it was the rain that dumped the day before. It would be nice if a couple water stations were added so that people won't shrivel up and die out there and with no cart girl .....yikes I ran out of water fast. Not much to say but a good trip to the high desert where it was actually 7 degrees cooler than the flat land in Cucamonga. Hit them straight!

Sinatra Rules

I just played this course for the first time on a great Under Par deal on a hot day and read the last two reviews submitted. I was instantly compelled to submit a review and contradict these last two guys and their snobby reviews and who seemingly have golf silver spoons in their mouths and who need to remember what they paid and when. I've played PGA West and Desert Willow and quite a few others in the summer and yes the conditions are better at many other places but to say this is the worst in the area? What a bunch of malarkey. Listen snobs, go back to Riviera. Us regular guys want a great layout, great views, friendly staff, level tee boxes, greens that roll true but we know are summer greens so not perfect, decent fairways and good bunkers. This course is just fine and in fact really fun and lush in many areas. The bunkers were GREAT though one of my attempts to get out wasn't great. I more than got my money's worth and I know what many courses look like after 3 days of 120 degrees. This one looked good. And by the way, grass grows when you water it and there was new growth throughout. Play this course fellas. That's to the rest of you guys out there; to the last two reviewers, remember to have your butler wipe you. And to the members of this course, thanks for letting me enjoy your place with my son. We really liked it.

Great Old Time

It was eye opening to go to the dining area and see several heavily decorated and uniformed military personnel in the room looking elegant and serious and it was a contrast for me to be in shorts and a baseball cap and I felt inadequate and self conscious among these men and, this course being adjacent to the national cemetery I knew that they were either going or coming from a burial service and it put the day in a proper context. General Old GC is more than just golf. The course is muscular and manly and a great test with good conditions and excellent practice areas. While you play you hear the staccato sounds coming from the gun range and there were flyovers by planes from March AFB and it was all thrilling but then every now and then you heard a different set of gun shots that were more rhythmic and it was unmistakable that these were salutes during a service. Golf has a certain spirituality for some including me and adding these other elements was surreal and I hope that in the few rounds remaining for this course as it ends its long history, players will take in more than just the golf game. Sometimes it's bigger than that and here next to those grounds where men and women rest forever after giving everything for us, take a moment and reflect. It could be a very profound round of golf.

Champions at the Retreat

Extremely challenging and at times borderline unfair, the Champions is a course that was designed and built into a location that would have detered most course designers but the Nicklaus company saw a course where most humans would only see impenetrable canyons and brush. In retrospect it isn't an ideal place for a course as the design and layout at times feels like it was forced into the landscape as opposed to the truly great courses that blend in so well and feel as if they were always there and just needed to be released. Nevertheless the Champions has some grandeur to it and at times some jaw dropping holes. The removal of some bunkers may have enraged a few of those who experienced the course originally but in the interest of playabilty and repeat playing from returning customers, you can't blame the powers that be from attempting to appease the naysayers. As it is, the Champions is tough, super challenging and in generally good shape and is a destination course due to its uniqueness and the beauty of its surroundings. It's well worth playing and if you survive only somewhat beaten to a pulp, it's worth trying again.
