Another Enjoyable Day At Annbriar

When we arrived, we knew there would be a frost delay. The individual gave us an update and told us we could go into the restaurant until it got nearer to when we could go out. He visited us in the restuarant and gave us another update. Excellent customer service which Annbriar always has.

The course is in excellent condition for mid-November. Always a pleasure to play this course.

Wonderful Course To Play In The Fall

Annbriar is a top notch golf course. An excellent course to play your fall/winter golf. The course is beautiful with dormant fairway zoysia grass contrasting with the lush green grass of the rough. The greens are in outstanding shape. There was nothing to complain about at this course. One of the best in the St. Louis Metro area.

Winter Weekend Rates Too High With Carts On Path Policy

Some public courses are now going to a carts on path policy, once the zoysia grass goes dormant. The Golf Club of Wentzville is one of those courses.

The course has only reduced their weekend greens fees by $12 for winter rates and you have to keep the carts on the path. This rate and cart policy is not going to bring people out to play. It was the emptiest I've ever seen the parking lot on a weekend - with a nice, sunny, fall day with the high's in the 60's.

The greens were on the slow side today. However, the overall conditions of the course was good for mid-November. The course also has new golf carts.

You can find courses with lower weekend green fees and allow carts in the fairway in the off-season. I would look for these and not play this course until the Spring time. They are losing a lot of revenue with this cart policy.

Beautiful Course In November

With the zoysia grass just going dormant, the striking contrast of the yellow/brown fairways and the lush green rough - is strikingly beautiful! Just a wonderful course to play even in the off-season. There was nothing to complain about, playing this course in early November.

The greens were in great shape. Not overly fast but nice to putt on. The greens were more firm than I could ever remember.

I noticed they gave the actual smokehouse (logo for Annbriar), a fresh coat of red paint. Looks great and matches the starter's pavilion perfectly.

They have an attractive $45 greens fee for a weekday rate. If you want to play some fall golf - Annbriar is the place to go.

Great Shape For November

The bunker restoration is coming close to the finish line. The new, white sand looks outstanding. Overall, the course is in great shape for early November. The $43 green fees is an excellent senior rate on a weekday - for this quality of course. However, it was $5 higher than a few weeks ago and we are in the off-season starting November 1.

The course needs to be aware of how unsightly certain holes look because of the lack of maintenance of excessive foliage in front of tees or greens. The worst is hole 12, where small trees in front of the tee can come into play on a drive and you have a hard time seeing the fairway. Other holes with foliage situations are holes 6 & 15. The is a beautiful course and this lack of maintenance makes the experience less memorable.

Great Course, Great Price

For the end of October and a greens fee of $38, there are not too many issues with playing Far Oaks. One of my favorite courses in the St. Louis Metro area. They aerated their greens early and the greens show no sign of any aeration holes. They were in good condition and had good speed.

The bunker restoration is still continuing. The holes that have the white sand – the holes look spectacular! The clubhouse felt that there were about 2 more weeks left. They have removed the two left/front bunkers on hole 2, made the left fairway bunker on hole 3 much smaller, removed the 2 left greenside bunkers on hole 10, looks like they are removing the left fairway bunkers on hole 12.

The biggest thing the course has to do is remove the vegetation/trees that block the beauty of these holes from the tee: 6, 12, 15 & 17.

Best Conditioned Course In The St. Louis Metro Area

You will not find a better conditioned course in the St. Louis metro area. The greens were running fast and they appeared to have been aerated several weeks ago and were in great shape. The senior greens fee during the week of $48, cannot be beat. Another course I like, Annbriar, is charging $60 during the week. Play Gateway instead. Better conditions and a better price.

The course is run properly too. Staffing at the inside dining room, 10th hole snack shop and a beverage cart.

If I had one recommendation, they probably need to enlarge the 4th tee box for the par 3. The gold tee is is not flat and getting beat up with the divots.

Always Exceeds Your Expectations

I played the Dogwood/Redbud courses. I like these 2 nines the best because of the different type of holes. The Hawthorne nine is completely flat.

For a city municipal course that gets plenty of play, this course always exceeds your expectations. They hold numerous tournaments at this course and they have the planning/administration of tournaments down to a science.

I noticed they cut some of the vegetation in front of the tee boxes to open up the beauty of the holes. Well done.

Not In Favor of Full Green Fees With Aerated Greens

The Landings at Spirit is a fun golf course to play and is located in a great location. I think the normal $72 green fees is too high, considering the overall conditioning of the fairways and rough. Many bad areas and no consistent zoysia throughout the fairways.

Then to charge the same price with aerated greens, makes no sense. it was an unusual aeration pattern too. Greens on 3,4,7,8,15,16,17 & 18 were aerated. The greens not aerated were good. They have consistently had excellent greens.

Place of play was better with an actual marshal doing something about it. The 1st tee box was not mowed and the rough was higher than normal. Also, the worst cart paths you may experience on a golf course.

Better Options To Choose From With A Minimal Increase In Greens Fees

Belk Park was the premier public course in the St. Louis metro area before 1990. Then numerous new golf courses were built making Belk Park not the go-to golf course it once was. It is a course for those who like a mostly flat course, wide open off the tee and a low price. We paid $27 for a Friday tee time. This price seems wonderful; however, you can play much better golf courses, which are in better shape for $10-15 more during the week at a senior rate. Those would be Spencer T. Olin, Far Oaks and Gateway National. I would recommend these courses to play over Belk Park.

Belk Park has a major problem with drainage in the fairways, especially on the front side. These would be holes 2, 4, 5, 7, 9 & 14 on the back. The landing areas on most of these are horrendous. The fairways on holes 5 & 9, have weeds that look like crabgrass. Several tees were in rough shape too from the gold tees (holes 1, 5, 16 & 18)

The greens were in good shape. The speed of them was acceptable – medium speed. The pace of play was much better than the last time I played here. The bunkers looked well-maintained, however, one bunker on hole 8 did not have enough sand.

Too Expensive For The Condition Of The Course

Stonewolf is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design. He gives you ample space to drive your golf ball. It is a 2nd shot golf course. The angles of the greens and the placement of the greenside bunkers, makes this a difficult golf course.

I last played Stonewolf back in April and the course has improved some but has got worse in other areas.

The improvements are the fairway on hole 10. In April, it was a disaster and now it is so much better. They placed new sod on the right side of the fairway, on the 2nd shot on the par 5, 14th hole. I thought the greens putted fairly well with some speed. However, some of the greens were still not in the best shape. The greens were soft, leaving many large ball marks. The greens that were the worse were holes 2, 5, 7 & 8.

The most disappointing aspect of Stonewolf were their bunkers. Most of them filled with water. I know we had a good rain on Tuesday night but for them to be still filled with water 4 days later was not expected.

The course has many “ground under repair” areas, marked by white paint. These would be holes 1, 12 & 17. The left side of the fairway, near the large fairway bunker on hole 14, is bare with no grass. Hole 6, has some significant erosion near the cart path by the green.

I thought the tees were in good shape except for hole 12. The tee shot on hole 9 was really narrowed, with the tree growth on both sides. Some trimming may be needed on the right side.

With greens fees of $90 for an early weekend round, this course is not worth playing. You can play better golf courses at a much cheaper rate at Spencer. T. Olin, Far Oaks & Annbriar in Illinois. Gateway National may have a similar green fee rate but is the best conditioned golf course in the area.

A Hilly, Interesting Design

They did not move much dirt at this course, This is a hilly course which requires course knowledge before you can play it. Many blind shots.

The clubhouse is old. Looks like a school building and very outdated.

The greens amd tees were outstanding. The fairways were above average. The rough was average and the bunkers were awful. You really did not feel like you were at a country club except for the tees and greens. Felt more like a good, public course.

The course has excellent cart paths but are missing on hole 11 and part of hole 17. The staff there is extremely friendly and the bar/restaurant was very good.

Overall Good Conditions But Not Up To Country Club Standards

When you get the chance to play a country club, you expect the conditions to be better than the public golf courses you play - which it is not. It is in great shape for a public course but not for a country club. Gateway National is in way better shape. Annbriar is another public course in better shape.

Most of the greens were smooth and had good speed. However, numerous greens with bad areas and showing some stress.

Tee box on hole 18 had dead, dry grass. The 4th fairway had some bad areas and a drainage issue.

Still fun to play but conditions are not up to country club standards.

Thank you for your feedback. Whitmoor Country Club was recently acquired by Concert Golf Partners. The new ownership team is working to put hundreds of thousands of dollars into the property to improve the quality of turf and conditions moving forward.

Whitmoor has a strong 3-year agronomic plan. We would love to have you come back out as our guest as we head into next season. You can meet with our team and we'll be happy to share more information about our new ownership.

One Of My Favorites To Play

I always like coming out the Golf Club of Wentzville to play. I know it will be a friendly, relaxed vibe at this course. One of the few golf courses who let you take carts out to the parking lot. Nice layout, not overly difficult. The difficult holes are 5, 8, 9, 10. Overall the tees, fairways and greens are in great shape. The course is reasonabily price for the weekends at $63.

The only issues I saw were the 5th tee is in rough shape. The rough just off the fringes had quite a bit of dead, brown grass.

Great Conditions, Best Value In The Area

Spencer T. Olin is a wonderful course just north of St. Louis, MO. Designed by Arnold Palmer with all the holes different and it has difficult greens. I paid $36 for a weekday senior rate. That is the best value you can find in the St. Louis metro area for an upscale golf course.

The course was in excellent condition.

The only minor issue I saw was their 12th & 15th greens, had some weeds starting to infiltrate the green.

Get out and play Spencer T. Olin. You will not be disappointed and you will leave with more money in your pocket.

Beautiful Course Which Is Overpriced & Not In Good Shape

This was the first time I’ve played Siena Golf Club. They indicated they had significant rain the week before I played the course. They said some bunkers could be unplayable but we really didn’t experience any issues with the bunkers.

There are not many good aspects to this course except for the beauty of the course. Many holes are stunning. It is located on the western outskirts of Las Vegas, situated against the mountains as your backdrop on many holes. The holes that stood out were: 4, 6, 8, 11, 12, 15, 16 & 17. The starter was very pleasant.

Here were the issues with the course:

Overall, it was not in good shape. The greens were very bumpy. Many greens had numerous small pockmarks. Hole 10 was the worst. The greens on holes 11 & 15 had this issue too.

The fairways have many brown spots. Very inconsistent looking grass. Some of the fairways were aerated.

Some of the bunkers were lacking enough sand. Also, some had grass growing in them.

We were charged over $190 for the round, with a $50 each way credit Uber drive credit. We asked other players that day what they paid for their green fees. They told us it was in the $80 range. Yes, the Uber credit is nice but my foursome paid $760 less $100 Uber credit ($660) vs. another group $240.

Pace of play was not good. No marshal on the course to monitor this. Well, over a 5-hour round.

On the course, there were individuals seeking donations on several of the par 3’s. I just prefer that a course does not do this. The lady on hole 7, I had no idea if she worked for St. Jude’s or this was a scam. The clubhouse should tell you about this when you pay for your green fees.

With such a pretty course, the finishing hole is an uphill tee shot. Not what I was expecting. After your tee shot, the hole looks good.

On nearly every tee box, the grass looks like crab grass. It may be an actual drought resistant grass but the grass does not match the grass on the course.

I would not recommend this course at the $190 we paid. It just was not in good shape. This course would easily get a top rating if it was in good shape. Very disappointing.

Not Up To Standards For The Price Paid

For $77 on the weekend, you expect a course to be in excellent shape – but Tapawingo is not. Many, many issues with this course.

The fairways were a brown/yellow color. The zoysia grass loves the heat and should be green at this time of the year. Hole 5 Meramec, the fairway was rough on the right side of the landing area.

The bunkers were awful. Not raked. There were weeds in the bunkers on the Prairies holes 1 & 4. Totally unacceptable. I found large rocks in several bunkers. Prairies holes 2 & 4.

Numerous tee shots had excessive growth of vegetation in front of the box, that ruined the view of the hole. Prairies holes 3 & 8 and Meramec hole 2.

Unfair pin placements. Prairies hole 5. Back left. Pin less than 3 steps from the fringe. Hole 6. Pin placed one yard from ridge in the green.

The greens putted on the slow side. Hole 4 Meramec, the green was stressing in the back left and had weeds overtaking the bent grass.

There are better options at a lower cost that have better conditions. Spencer T. Olin, Annbriar, Golf Club of Wentzville – to name a few.

Fun Course To Play

Always enjoy playing at the Golf Club of Wentzville. A relaxed, friendy vibe you get playing here. The price of $62 on the weekend is right for the course you are getting.

In general, The course was in great shape. Tees, fairways and greens. The greens had good speed to them. They have been watered a lot. Huge ball marks when your ball landed on the green.

The only issue with the conditions of the course, was the rough, especially around the greens is mostly brown and dead.

The pace of play was slow on the first nine but got better on the back because a twosome dropped out after nine holes.

Good News & Bad News

Let’s start with the good news. The bunker restoration is continuing. On holes 2 & 3, they have put in the new WHITE sand. It looks phenomenal. The senior weekday rate of $38 on this course, it can’t be beat. Overall, the greens were good and putted at a good speed.

However, there is too much bad news to give this course an above average rating. I can be a 5-star course someday, if they only add a little extra care to the course.

The number one issue of this course is the excessive vegetation/small trees in front of the 12th tee. You cannot see the fairway now and several tee shots in my group hit the small trees in front of the green.
It absolutely looks terrible. Also, in the creek in front of the par 3, 6th hole, has too much vegetation in the creek. To tell you how bad it is, my friend hit a hole-in-one on that hole and I could not see it go into the hole from the side of the tee. What a disgrace!

Need to start working on some of the fairways. The second part of the fairway on hole 3 is bad. Holes 4 & 5, the fairways are rough too. The end of the fairway on hole 15 is weeds and dirt.

On one of the hottest weeks, they did not have fans on the greens, except for hole 17. Overall, without the fans, the greens were in surprising, good shape. But, why would you only have the fans on one green? The 12th & 13th greens had some small blemishes and the green on hole 14 is showing some stress.

After the bunker restoration and some effort on some of the fairways and removing some excess vegetation/small trees, this course will be one of the best in the St. Louis metro area. However, it is not there yet.

Best In The Area

Gateway National is in the best shape of any metro St. Louis course I've played in 2023. The tees, fairways and greens are excellent. The greens have good speed to them also.

Playing here during the week as a senior is a bargain at $48. They are a well run golf course, from the front desk, starter, beverage cart, snack bars at the clubhouse and 10th tee.

This course is much cheaper during the week. I checked pricing on Saturdays, which can be in the $87-96 range.
