One of the Best Courses in the MB Area

Fantastic golf course with a fun, challenging layout. It’s the first week of March and this course is in better shape than anything in my home area during peak season. Every single employee we interacted with had a pleasant demeanor, especially the guys at the bag drop. Super friendly and helpful.

Pacing was off for us us because we were stuck behind 3 foursomes and we’re just a twosome. Made the round take 5 hours, but it was nice just taking in the scenery while waiting: 2 gators and lots of water fowl made for some nice pictures.

Play this course if you can, especially if you can get a discount on GolfNow. Worth every penny and look forward to playing it again next trip.

In A Class By Itself

I booked this course as a way to squeeze another round of golf in at the tail end of a Myrtle Beach golf trip for myself and a friend. I was able to find a fantastic deal on GolfNow and we added this course as a way to break up the 5 hour drive from MB to Richmond, VA (it’s about 3.5 hours from the beach and 1.5 hours from RVA). Thankfully, the pro shop manager helped us out because the weather leaving the beach at 8am was horrible and a nasty crash near the NC/SC border on I-95 resulted in us being about an hour late for our prepaid tee time. He was kind enough to reschedule us without incurring any extra fees or hassle- that’s customer service done above and beyond, and it was incredibly appreciated!

Onto the course, well I have to say that the 4.7 star average this course has accumulated here is very true and well-earned. The course was gorgeous: plush and green at every turn. Soft tee boxes and fresh cut, lined fairways with very true-rolling greens await you. There were 2-3 greens that had just been aerated, but the rest were near perfect. There was even plenty of white sand In every bunker if you choose to play from them (we were being very Covid-19 aware and pulling the ball out to avoid having to rake, and well, maybe to help pad the scorecard). Speaking of difficulty, the course is a bit hilly, but still accessible and pretty forgiving if you make a bad shot here and there. A few dogleg holes force you to club down and do some shot shaping, but there’s not much else when it comes to hazards. Water holes are mainly around the Par 3’s and make them quite scenic to stop and take a look or picture at.

Overall, between the staff generosity and friendliness, excellent conditions and ease of access (it’s on the main road and only about 4 miles off of the interstate at the Rocky Mount, NC exit) this course has been added to our short list of places to play on the way home from a MB or Pinehearst trip for us. It really is a must play for the region. The only negative thing we experienced was that our golf cart must’ve been set on the slowest speed setting available and it probably added 15-20 minutes to our pace. Maybe we had a bad cart, who knows, but it did annoy us as the round progressed and the afternoon showers caught us on the back nine. Speed those things up Belmont, please.

Do yourself a favor and stop for a round here if you’re going to or coming from a golf getaway nearby- you will not be disappointed because it’s a great track. PS- bring some insect repellent for the front nine.

Surpringly Tough, yet Scenic

Our usual foursome played here on 9/25/17 after finding a great, discounted rate on Golfnow. The course was about an hour drive for us, but it's always nice riding to and around Williamsburg.

The course was in nice shape from tee to green, everything relatively lush after a reasonably warm summer. The conditions for our round weren't as comfortable with temps in the upper 80's and the humidity unusually high for late September. There are lots of places to get some beautiful photos around the course.

We played the Blackheath course, which I believe is the public course among the entire complex. There are 3 total courses available to play. There were plenty of water hazards to play around, but thanks to smart tee box placements they didn't really factor into our group. The course is also relatively flat and wide open. It surely isn't an overly difficult course if you play the appropriate tees, but that's what makes for an enjoyable round.

Every staff member, from the clubhouse to the starter, were very helpful and friendly. We were running a bit late and had to grab a biscuit from the onsite restaurant, it was kind of expensive ($6), but hot and tasty. There are several restrooms around the course, offering soda machines and water fountains with ice makers. They all came in handy for our hot round and were much appreciated.

Our only complaint was that if you didn't stay in the fairway it became a chore at times to find your golf ball in the rough, even if you saw where it landed. It's very thick and deep. But hey, you know what you have to do there. There were also some speed discrepancies between greens- some were lightning fast and others were really slow.

If this course was 20-30 minutes closer to Richmond we'd play it several times per season, but I also don't doubt we'll return again at some point. It's a fun and scenic course with lots to offer.

An Amazing Mountain Course

I was able to book a round on this beautiful, mountain golf course through GolfNow for the incredible low rate of $30pp. This course normally charges $65-70.

Even though it had snowed 3-4" in the days leading up to our reservation the course was in superb condition. Plush, green fairways with quick paced greens made for a very challenging round for our foursome. There were only a few holes that remained a bit muddy so, unfortunately, play was ruled as Cart Path Only. This was my only gripe of the day- if they would just declare certain holes CPO instead of the entire course we could've completed our round in around 4 hours, instead of the 5 it took.

The pro shop and grill staff were very helpful and polite and the food was fantastic. We enjoyed 3-4 games of free billiards while snacking on delicious fish & chips. Even the adult beverages were reasonably priced.

This is hands down the finest course I've played in WV (and possibly overall), and I will be returning every time I visit my dad to get a round or two in. (I still haven't played the Old White course at the Greenbrier Hotel, but I hope to remedy that soon). I can't recommend this course highly enough. Beautiful course conditions, stunning views and an awesome, friendly staff make Glade Springs a real treasure. Do yourself a favor and play a round here- you won't leave disappointed.

Front 9 Perfect, Back 9 Aerated

I consider Brookwoods my home course, as I play here 8-10 times a year. This was my second time playing here in 2017 and I have to say the course was in fantastic shape this early in the season. Most fairways are growing in and greening up quite nicely, while the primary rough is still mostly brown. The only areas that could use some TLC are the approach areas around a lot of the greens. They are still patchy and uneven. There is plenty of sand in the bunkers and, until a few days prior to our round, the greens were smooth and straight. The back nine has just been aerated and was completely sandy- almost too much so and nearly unplayable. I realize it's that time of year and most other courses are also gearing up for spring golf. I just wish they'd allow groups to replay the front instead of struggling through the back nine and ruining chances for great scores.

The staff here is usually pretty friendly and the clubhouse is a bit dated, but still has everything you require for a quick bite mid-round or a couple of beers on the 19th hole. It also looks like they purchased new golf carts for 2017.

Overall, this is my favorite course in central Virginia, and I look forward to playing a lot of rounds here throughout the year. I just wish they'd offer up some discount rates from time to time through an online agent or even on their own website.

Usually great course conditions, moderately challenging layout and always a good time. I highly recommend this course.

Fun & Challenging Course

A friend and I played this course during a bit of a cold snap here in central Virginia, recently. The course was still expectedly brown and slightly muddy, but still in good condition overall. The fairways are a bit on the tight side, but there's plenty of low cut primary rough to play out of if you don't find the fairways off of the tee box.

The greens were rolling straight and true, while being moderately fast. There was ample sand in most bunkers and a very nice array of hole variety from one hole to the next. Due to the muddiness of the course it was CPO and that made for a longer, more tiring day but we still had a good time and completed our round in just over 4 hours.

I will definitely return to try this course again once the weather warms up and everything gets a bit greener. I really wish they would offer some discount rates on GolfNow or even as part of the Tee Time Golf Pass, but I can't hold that against them so long as they keep the course in top shape. I recommend this course for players of all caliber. It was a cold, but fun round. I'm looking forward to another round at the Hawk soon.

Private Club Quality at a Public Course

My regular group plays this course 10-12 times a year, throughout the entire year. The course is moderately challenging (especially the front nine) and is always in very good to great shape. They have some of the best greens in the area. The entire course is still brown from winter but the fairways are still pretty lush and the greens are rolling true. I only wish players would take the time to repair their divots and rake the bunkers, but that can be said for almost every golf course around.

The newly built clubhouse is very nice with a full bar and a grill that serves pretty decent food. They have a nice practice area and the staff is usually pretty friendly and accommodating.

The only minor annoyance is the fact the course is across the street from the local high school and in the fall it's not uncommon to have to play your entire round while listening to the marching band and drum line practice for hours in the school parking lot. Our group has also been berated several times when the kids get out of school and are heading home, but hey- kids will be kids and there's not much the course can do about it. It's just distracting to the point it's annoying.

Overall, this is one of the better courses in the area and is almost always in tip top shape. The entire city of Petersburg is currently dealing with a financial crisis and possible bankruptcy, and since the course is owned and maintained by the city, it could effect the survival of this hidden gem. Come out and play here and help them keep this place awesome and more importantly- open.

Come Feed The Goat

My group of friends have lovingly dubbed this golf course "The Goat". Why? We don't know, we just did.

This course is in desperate need of some TLC. The fairways are just open fields with lots and lots of bare spots, weeds and pine needles. It has been this way for years and years. This course's only plus is the greens- they are pretty well manicured and usually roll straight and true. The bunkers have little to no sand in them and can actually be putted out of.

The clubhouse is an old, double-wide trailer and the golf carts have seen better days, but the cart paths are so beaten down and broken that you never have to worry about CPO rules. Just ride to your ball, ride up to the greens, etc. It's all good because this is The Goat.

Come out and play here so maybe they'll spend some money to fix up the joint. We'd like to start a movement and get every golf group reading Golf Advisor to bring a pocketful of grass seed or sand and casually Feed The Goat as you play your round. You can help make this a better place to play.

And, oh yeah, be sure to harass the old guys playing from the women's tees. Shame them back 20-30yds every time you see them. I mean really...

Dreary day, but a fun round

We had quite an enjoyable round of golf here. The course was almost deserted due to overcast, misty rain conditions with highs in the upper 50's.

The course is still brown from winter- both the fairways and the rough. It was tough to pick up the ball throughout this entire rolling hills layout. The greens were rolling true, if a little slow. There's a very nice, diverse collection of golf holes here: long, straight par 5's, short par 4's, water holes, etc. The bunkers were not too difficult to hit out of and well placed throughout the course.

The clubhouse and pro shop were very nice and the practice area is massive. Brand new, bright red golf carts awaited us, too. We got an excellent deal on Golfnow and despite this course being 50 miles from me I have no doubt I'll play here again later this year.

The only gripe we had was that despite the fact we haven't had much rain over the last week the course was still on the muddy side. With all those rolling hills, though, I get the impression this course doesn't drain very well. If you don't want to deal with conditions like that you should probably wait until warmer weather arrives to ensure this course is green and dry. Other than that, I recommend this course quite highly. It's moderately challenging to get to the green and then it feels like they really want you to try to score well with smooth, mostly flat greens and not overly difficult pin placements.

If only the dreary weather had disappeared it would've been a perfect golf outing.

Difficult course, unequal rule enforcement

We played the course on a beautiful, but chilly day (temps high-50's). The course looks fantastic this early in the season. Green fairways and putting surfaces with light brown rough areas and the bunkers had plenty of sand.

There's a ton of construction, both for the new golf clubhouse and surrounding homes, so there was no peace and quiet throughout the entire round. The current clubhouse is about a mile from the practice area and first tee. You need to show up 10-15 minutes earlier just for the ride to the starting area.

Despite no rain in the area for almost a week play was ruled as cart path only. Fairways were dry and fast, but you couldn't ride to your ball even at 90 degrees. Really? That made this hilly, unforgiving course to be even tougher than it needs to be. There was no one off in front of us so we got to establish our own pace, but by the 6-7th hole a couple of 4-somes had caught us because they were ignoring the cart path rule. So, to speed up, we decided to ignore it as well. Of course, by the 9th hole the Marshall caught us and reprimanded us but said nothing to the groups playing behind us. They rode all over the fairways through the entire round.

It's a very attractive course, very tough with some of the craziest greens and championship level pin placements I've ever seen. Tons of deep-lipped bunkers made it a rough round for our group (we shoot mid-to-high 80's).

Despite being somewhat local and getting a pretty reasonable rate from Golfnow I don't think we'll be back. Too tough and weird rules enforcement made for a less than enjoyable day.

Thank you for playing our course and reviewing your golfing experience, as we appreciate any and all feedback. I’m sorry for the inconvenience of the course being cart path only. From December through March, we typically keep the carts on the path. It has nothing to do with the course being wet or dry, it’s simply an agronomic practice that has been in place since 2012. We have seen significant improvements with our course conditions by limiting the compaction of our fairways and rough. We always hope our guests will abide by those rules and I do appreciate your group honoring our wishes. Unfortunately, some follow them while others do not (even after they have been spoken to a second time). From your review it looks like you played early in the afternoon on the 21st. One of the groups behind you had 4 of our members, of which 3 required handicap flags. We offer handicap flags for golfers with ailments and disabilities. The majority of our rounds are booked through the golf shop. We are able to notify our guests at the time of their call of our cart rules. When booking through Golf Now, once you click on the tee time the cart path only notice shows up under the Online Rate. Going forward, I’ve instructed my pro shop staff, starters, and marshals to do a better job of explaining the rule to those who may not have seen the notice. I hope in the future you will give us another try. Again, thank you for taking the time in reviewing Magnolia Green Golf club and we are sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused your group.

Beautiful Course

I was part of a foursome that were able to book a round through a member. The course is private.

There wasn't much rain in the area for several weeks leading up to our round but the entire course was very green.

Tee boxes were plush and soft, fairways were mowed with an ample first cut rough and almost all the greens were extremely soft, but very fast. The rough is thick and it was easy to lose sight of your ball if it ventured too far off the short grass. All traps had plenty of fluffy, white sand.

Pace of play was fine- we played our round in just over 4 hours. Every employee we encountered, from the pro shop to grounds keepers, were friendly and made sure not to interrupt our play. The course manager was even out on the back nine marking new pin placements and complimented our shots on a couple of holes.

Overall, this may is one of the nicest courses in central Virginia. If you get the chance to play a round I highly recommend it.

Greens need big time help

Played with a friend on 8/3/2015. I had heard really good things about this course and was thrilled to be able to book the desired tee time an hour before. Upon arriving, the clubhouse looked nice and had the feel of a nicer, private club than a public one.

Check in went smoothly and our discounted rate included a small bucket of range balls for $29. The driving range was very nice, along with the practice green. Things would be vastly different on the course however. The first thing we noticed was the cut grass mounds all along the many of the fairways. The greens were in pretty bad shape as well- weeds, brown patches, dirt and lots and lots of unrepaired divots (not the GC fault). Some greens were very fast and unforgiving, while some were as slow as a turtle. That made the day very frustrating for both myself and the experienced golfer with me. I don't think either one of us had a 1-putt on any green even from within 4-5 feet. It was also extremely hot, 94 degrees, and there just wasn't enough water stations along the course to help cool us down. There was also no drink cart service offered.

Overall, I can't give this course high ratings on anything other than the courtesy of the pro shop employee and I'm not sure if I'd play another round here for the rest of this season, even with a nice discount. They really need to work on those greens and other golfers really need to repair their divots here.

Confidence Builder

Played this course with a friend in early July. We had an early tee time to try and beat the summer heat and humidity. The course was in fantastic shape, green almost everywhere, and the fairways were cut and like carpet on most holes. The greens were fast and true with only 1 hole showing some patches of dead grass.

An awesome, well-kept course that's easy enough for beginners to gain some confidence and for good golfers to post a nice score. I'll be playing this course over and over through the summer and into the fall.
