Paschal Golf Club
Played On 06/01/2020A charming old girl
I tried Paschal today with my Father-in-law on a tip from a neighbor. We had played a local par 3 course recently and the tip was that Paschal was the same distance away, the same price but a full course with some Arnold Palmer history.
The tip was accurate. This 9 hole course has a fun and somewhat challenging lay out. It’s not particularly long, but considering that it’s over 100 years old, that makes sense. The main word I have to describe this place is charming. It’s by no means in outstanding condition. The fairways and greens are tall but I never seemed to mind. There’s not loads of trouble but the amount of blind shots and dog legs gave a first time player some tough times. There are NO cart paths. There’s some areas of dirt trails for the carts. I would definitely walk this place in the future. I loved that each hole had a name. I loved that Arnie walked these hills. I loved that I had a birdie and a handful of pars. The pro shop attendant was friendly and welcoming.
Overall, you get what you pay for here. It’s not great. It’s not long at all. There are no amenities. But, dang I enjoyed my round here. I’d definitely come back in the future for some practice and exercise.
River Ridge Golf Club
Played On 05/27/2020My favorite Raleigh area course
I’ve played here 4 times the past few months along with 4 or 5 visits to the practice area. It’s very convenient to me from our house on the east side of Raleigh. The range is definitely adequate, all grass. Sometimes the hitting area can get worn out but they put effort into keeping it up. It also has 2 practice greens, one for chipping and a large practice bunker, the other for putting.
You can typically find a friendly starter in the area calling people in from the practice area, as they do include a small bag of range balls, which is a separator among the competition. The staff inside the clubhouse has been hit or miss. A few times I’ve been put off by some rudeness.
The course was in great shape yesterday. The rain hadn’t overly impacted the course. Fairways still had decent roll and the greens were in tremendous shape. Also, there are some massive greens. Be prepared to 3 putt if you don’t hit into the correct tier. The layout is tremendous in my opinion. It’s not driver off of every tee. Hazards and doglegs force you to use different clubs and different shapes to score well. That being said, it’s not impossible either. It’s a nicely balanced course.
Pace of play is a mixed bag like most places. Yesterday we got done in 3:20. I’ve also been there when it’s crowded and ran almost 5 hours.
