Bloomingdale Golf Club
Played On 09/26/2023Not long, pleasant and tree-lined
In fall, the conditions have been splendid. The greens roll well. While not a long course, the front 9 has still given me fits. So the course is short but not necessarily easy. (I’ve done much better on the back.)
Some complain about tree-lined fairways, but I grew up on the east coast with forests along many holes. No complaints by me.
Has a good, established feel. I’ll go back.
Coachman's Golf Resort - Red/White
Played On 07/24/2017Old-Style Muni
I haven't played a course like this in a long time. It's an old-style muni with very wide fairways, short holes, huge greens and straightforward layout. At first, the course seemed a little plain and uncreative, especially on the front (red) nine. But the more I played, the more it reminded me of courses from my youth in the hills of Pennsylvania. And the back (white) nine which turns toward some lovely woodlands and the Wisconsin countryside is both picturesque and quiet. Here, you won't find fairways lined with townhomes and subdivisions, something I forever find in the Chicago area. Instead, there are rolling hills, the sounds of nature, and some much more interesting holes. In the end, I had fun. Don't come looking for a Pete Dye design. But if you stick a few wedges, you can make some birdies and have a pleasant day on the course.

Pheasant Run Resort
Played On 07/18/2017Uninspired Design
The course is nicely kept, and the greens, while a bit slow, are in very good shape. However, I found this course to be an uninspired design, on an uninspiring patch of very flat land. Apart from maybe a long Par 3, I can't think of a single memorable hole. But with the greens kept as they are, I admit: Any missed putts were my fault.
Klein Creek Golf Club
Played On 07/13/2017Fair, challenging test
Having played a handful of area courses, I was a little wary when a member, with whom I was paired, told me on the first tee, "This course can punish you." In my experience, this means it's either a very difficult design, or one that's terribly unfair, with silly, kitschy holes. In fact, it was neither. Klein Creek proved to be a fair layout with many smartly designed holes that reward intelligent decision-making. I like that. The member added later, "They're investing in new drainage for the bunkers." This is fortunate, because after some rain, many of bunkers were filled with standing water. But apart from that, the course played quite well, and it was a very enjoyable 18 holes of golf.
Tamarack Golf Club
Played On 06/27/2017Sadly, it was disappointing
At first glance, the course holds promise: Bunkers, water hazards, and shapely fairways and greens make for some pleasing-looking holes. But as you make your way, you realize the fairways are riddled with weeds, the greens are bumpy from last year's aeration, and the winding creeks are more bothersome and pesky -- than proper penalty for a bad shot. I actually shot a good score on the front, just one over, with a ball in some impossible-to-see water. And yet, I didn't love it. Next time, I'd look for a Hot Deal.
Bliss Creek Golf Course
Played On 06/25/2017Short Course, Decent Greens, Some Quirky Holes
The course is quite short and many greens small. So you'll find a quirkiness to some holes, such as the 10th, which has a massive tree protecting all but a sliver of the dogleg, and 16, which looks like a green that was randomly dropped in an open grassy space. But while quite firm, most of the greens rolled quite nicely, meaning a good stroke was generally rewarded. The fairways were well kept. And with no Par 5 reaching 500 yards, there was a quite a bit of risk-reward. I'm glad I had a Hot Deal to play, but I would say it's worth trying if you'd like a chance of shooting a good number. Par is 70 -- one of the par 4's on the online scorecard is actually a 5. Be ready with your wedges. If you play smart, you can score.
West Palm Beach Golf Course
Played On 04/05/2017Not bad
I've certainly played better munis, and I've played much worse. The course design has a lot of potential. But the overall conditions, especially fairways, detract from it. But for a spare-of-the-moment round, on a day when I finished working early nearby, it was worth it. Just don't include it as part of your Palm Beach golf holiday.
