Stow South at Stow Acres Country Club
Played On 06/13/2021Not worth the money, poor condition
First off the price is pretty high, especially when you have to pay for a cart even if you are walking. Having played this course in the past I remember it being a challenging course, but the conditions today were pretty poor. Didn't look like it had been cut in a few days, with no definition from fairway to rough and the greens were clearly not cut and rolled so they were pretty slow and bumpy (lots of unrepaired ballmarks too). Fairways (wide bladed rye apparently, not nice golf course grasses) were spotty with many areas very rough to the point you needed to play preferred lies if you wanted any grass under your ball in many cases. And the tee boxes were very poor. Also the trees lining the course haven't been pruned apparently so they blocked many of your shots making an already tight course ridiculous. I was very unimpressed and to make matters worse the trash cans were pretty much all overflowing. Doesn't really look like they do a great job with maintaining the course. I was pretty disappointed especially after hearing the new owners were going to upgrade the course after some down years, but apparently that's not the case and they are just collecting high greens fees instead. Spend your money and time on a nicer course.
Foxborough Country Club
Played On 08/11/2017Very good semi private course
I've played this course several times in the past but this most recent time showed the course to be in terrific shape. Although they pin aerated the fairways and tees it was almost unnoticeable, except where they had too much sand on the tees. The course has a nice routing that is challenging with tight fairways and overhanging trees, you need to know what shot to hit to be successful. The greens are typically fast (although not as fast this time) and with plenty of slope to make putting very difficult if you're not familiar with the course. It has an older clubhouse but really good food available and the pretty nice pro shop too. Not too many public play times but worth the effort.
Wentworth Hills Golf & Country Club - Semi Private
Played On 07/22/2017Nice conditions but slow play
Course is in excellent condition. The routing is ok but nothing spectacular and in fact pretty short overall. A couple of the par 4's on the back are ridiculously short and should have been lengthened. Nice course to play if you can get there early or late but during the middle of the day it can take forever to play this course. I've even seen people leave in the middle of a round as it was taking way too long. The owners push foursomes out every 8 mins unfortunately. Overall pretty nice course though, just not the toughest. Wish they would really speed up the greens to make this short course much more challenging.
Poquoy Brook Golf Course
Played On 07/15/2017Challenging course
Overall good course layout and challenging too. Course is in pretty nice condition this year with all the rain we've had so the fairways and greens are very nice and the rough is thick and hazardous. Course was bought by another group over the past year and they've renovated the clubhouse and moved the pro shop closer to the 1st tee. The new bar and restaurant aren't as good as the previous version and you can't get food very quickly either. I guess they want more people hanging out at the bar rather than sitting down for food. Overall it's a nice track and worth the time to play.
Cranberry Valley Golf Course
Played On 07/06/2017Nice course for the Cape
Very nice, challenging course especially for a public course on the Cape. Can be pretty tough from the back tees too, but for most golfers the white tees are more than sufficient and challenging. Quirky 18th hole with a double dog leg though. Driving range is first rate with great practice facilities. Clubhouse and pub are pretty good too and you don't have to be a golfer to have a decent lunch there either, very nice overall. Course is always in pretty nice shape too.
Glen Ellen Country Club
Played On 06/24/2017Nice course - play it while you can
Course and conditions are very good. Layout is challenging but not hard. Fairways and greens are good and the rough is difficult. Range is all grass which is really nice. Unfortunately they sold the course and it will be redeveloped starting next year I've heard. Rates have been dropped so it's a great bargain especially after noon on the weekends.
Triggs Memorial Golf Course
Played On 08/06/2016Nice Ross design at reasonable price
If you're a fan of Donald Ross courses then you will like this course. Although a muni it still retains a lot of the original Ross design features and routing, but has that burned out feel most of the time (which isn't necessarily a bad thing on this type of course). The routing and terrain on this course are terrific and you really need to think about your shots. Plus there are some of the oldest trees on this course that you'll ever see. And the fact that it's right in the middle of the city of Providence it pretty incredible. Really enjoy playing this course, but be prepared for an odd drive to the course passing through some potentially sketchy areas of Providence - but it's fine with no problems.
Sketchy areas? Chalkstone Avenue is a main road without issues. Diversity, sure. Sketchy? Nah.
