Sterling Hills Golf Club
Played On 01/25/2021Windy Winter Day - Still Had Fun
Great course overall and despite the wet, cold, and windy conditions the staff and groundskeepers made sure we had a good round of golf. Free range balls and lunch included with the round, can't beat that!
Dutcher Creek Golf Course
Played On 01/05/2021New Year Dutcher Round
I played on Jan 5th after a few days of rain and cold weather and the fairways and greens were in much better shape than I expected. I never found any mud, never got plugged, and my ball stayed up really well. I was surprised how good of shape the greens were in and how fast they were given the cold, wet weather. That being said, this course is in need of some significant design changes after 25+ or so years of never having a significant face lift. With the sport of golf exploding the way it is, now would be the time to stay ahead of trend. More rock and water features, updated trap and mogul design, a refreshed lounge/clubhouse to name a few wouldn't hurt. Great hometown course overall, but could capitalize on some detailed changes.
Roosevelt Municipal Golf Course
Played On 11/13/2020Token Hollywood Nine
This course is a walking 9 right at the base of the Griffith Observatory, Hollywood hiking trails, and right across from The Greek Theatre. If there ever was a token "Hollywood Course" this fits right into the theme.
The rate of play is pretty slow as it's a walking course with plenty of amateur players in the mix. Keep in mind that during daylight savings months if you book a tee-time 3:30 or later you won't make it through all 9 before dark.
The course is well kept and very playable for all skill levels while offering some challenging, yet fun, course design. The views on the 8th and 9th are incredible!
Monterey Park Golf Course
Played On 11/05/2020Monterey Park par 3.25 course
The course sets atop a hill just a couple miles outside of Los Angeles which provides some decent views and landscape with reduced noise from highways below. The course is well-kept but every single tee box is basically a synthetic turf mat setting on top of a concrete slab. I prefer real grass, or at least the option, which wasn't the case on every hole. The greens were all aerated heavily and had deep aeration divots in them which drastically redirected my ball at slow speeds. Lastly, there are range balls EVERYWHERE on this course and I counted at least 4 or 5 on every fairway I played. Groundskeep was definitely slacking the day I played - good thing I play a bright red Bridgestone ball otherwise I could have confused my lie with about 30 other balls during my course of play. All in all, a great practice course for the value and decent location, I'd be back for a quick 9.
Rancho Park Par - 3 Golf Course
Played On 11/02/2020Fox Studios lunch break course - par 3
I played the 9 hole par 3 course here which is adjacent to their "larger" course which offers par 4 and 5 play. It's a fun little "lunch break" course which offers 9 quick par 3 holes, most of which are in the 70 - 90 yard range. I played all 9 in less than 30 minutes, which is why I think many of the Fox Studios crew probably pops over for quick rounds during production.
The course itself is decently maintained with smooth greens and well cut fairways for a par 3 course. The tee boxes are mostly turf squares but there are patches of grass to swing from as well, which I prefer. The course is right beside a busy thoroughfare, I think Pico Blvd, so it does get pretty loud at times but serves as a decent little golf oasis in the middle of Los Angeles. I'd come play here again if I was short on time and wanted a quick and easy practice round.
