Heworth Golf Club
Played On 05/21/2023Great value, challenging in places.
Greens we found were a little inconsistent, some like glass, others a little pacey.
Not a complaint though and we will return again
Durham City Golf Club
Played On 04/29/2018Arrived to cloud cover and rather cold, sun came out as we were warming up on the practice green and it turned into a lovely day, not cold from then on and not hot either.
Our 4ball were behind 5 or 6 4balls and until we got into the round, we were hanging about at tee boxes for the first three holes.
Some greens were patchy in places, but that's to be expected at this time of year and the grass that was on the greens was almost immaculate, they were also all true, all were the same pace as each other, which always helps.
We were advised that placing was in effect on the fairways and to be honest, the four of us really had no need to do so.
Our GPS trackers were thrown somewhat with the 7th hole having been taken out of play and they didn't get back on track till the 12th hole, but that didn't detract from the experience.
Our winner had 31 points off a 10 handicap, so a little challenging would be the best summation I could give.
A spacious and welcoming club house for a drink afterwards. All in all, a good day and we hope to return again soon.
Chester-le-Street Golf Club
Played On 09/17/2017First time in a long time that I've played my hometown course. 9 of us commenced play in an absolute downpour, that has flooded a few greens by the time we reached the 2nd green. Players in the club competition were walking off the course saying the greens were unplayable.
Within moments, the rain stopped, from then on, everything was fine, yes, a few problems with casual water on the greens, but nothing that was unsurmountable.
27 stableford points off a 9 handicap (me) won the day with 8th place coming in at 23 points.
The course is well designed and plays moderately difficult, especially difficult for novice golfers, as proved by our 9th participant who was playing his first round at a 'proper' course, scoring only 8 points from his 18 handicap.
The recent changes have taken away some of the challenges, most notably, the removal of the small copse to the right of the fairway on the 10th, formerly, it used to force you left and more often than not would end up with you having a long 2nd shot from the bottom of the bank because of the fairway falling away from you from right to left, or you'd overcompensate and end up in the heavy rough on the right. Now it's just aim for the flag and a straight shot will keep you on the right side of the fairway, leaving a wedge to the green. Excellent value for money and combined with the hotdeal, we all played for £15 each, definitely one to revisit when we consider where we're going to play next year.
George Washington Golf Club
Played On 07/30/2017First time I've returned to GW in about 8 years.
First thing I noticed was that even though the course is really well established, the trees were so much more mature and established, enough on a couple of holes to make the drive seem somewhat intimidating (especially the 17th, which played into the wind on Sunday)
Wide fairways otherwise and plenty of margin for error, just unfortunate that my group of 3 seemed to like playing from the rough, we were in it so often from the tee (I made the fairway on only 4 of my 14 Par 4/5 drives)
Large greens that were soft but firm that rewarded attacking shots into them.
I definitely won't leave it as long till I return.
South Moor Golf Club
Played On 06/25/2017Probably the hardest course I've ever played in 30 years of playing golf.
Trees, Rough, gorse, this place has it all.
I played particularly badly, but still really enjoyed the experience.
I'd love to play it again, this time with a little less wind and with me playing a lot better.
Best advice I can give is: Be Straight, play percentages and you will return a good score
Stocksfield Golf Club
Played On 05/28/2017First time I've played here in about 4 years, my game was terrible, only 18 Stableford points, wayward driving on the front 9 punishes you. I always found my ball, that does help keep your spirits up if you are playing poorly here.
Fantastic weather and a course in great condition, with very true greens that rewarded bravery on them.
Will definitely return in the future, clubhouse facilities and staff all first class.
Whickham Golf Club - Crombie Course
Played On 04/23/2017Excellent variation
First time I've played the course since the rearrangement of the course, it troubled my GPS from the third to 6th holes, but that was a trivial inconvenience.
The course was in fantastic condition for late April after a wet winter.
Excellent use of the natural lay of the land and a good variation of hole
types.
Our winner on the day had 33 Stapleford points playing off 10, many of
the holes leave you with a short iron if you hit a definite enter drive, poor drives aren't always punished badly, for example, I hooked my tee shot from the first and sat in the rough on the wrong side of the 2nd fairway, although I had a 3 ft high wall to negotiate, I was still able to reach the green with my second shot.
A definite contender for next year.
This downside isn't connection Ted to Golf Now or Tees Off Times, but for years the club wouldn't have us as a golf society on a Sunday, but a group of 6 of us were welcomed with open arms.
Great value for money and as I say, a definite contender for next year
