Are you kidding me?

As a Southbury resident, I play this course fairly frequently, when I want to get out for a quick nine and not have to drive a distance. On the good side, the owner/pro Dave Cook is a nice guy. But the course is poorly designed and maintained - people suggesting it’s one of the best nines in the state have lost there minds. Turf conditions are poor, there’s goose poop everywhere, and often pace of play is horrendous. It attracts the casual golfer due to price and being flat and easy to walk. There’s pond everywhere and shots often run off slopes into the pond because of poor grading.

At one point, Dave had the golf maintenance from the adjacent Heritage Hills course taking care of it. But they were too expensive, so the maintenance is done on a shoestring budget. If you play there, go with very low expectations.

Good management, but greens only in fair shape

Played River Pines for the first time Saturday in December. The pro shop and starters very friendly and helpful, course was pretty clean of leaves, bunkers were groomed. Two issues - there was no rough to define fairways and the greens were only fair. Other public courses in area have much better greens, and are priced lower. It looked like they made some patches but that doesn’t create uniform surface until they fill in.

One thing that was nice - walkers welcome at a discount. Too many courses in area are in developments and don’t allow walking. I’ll do so next time I play.

Classic CT parkland course

One of the nicest Munis in Central CT. Challenging but fair layout, you’ll need to hit every club in the bag. Green fees always fair, very walkable, friendly. Food in the clubhouse is good, great junior program too.

Nice layout, poorly managed

I'm a local and play Oxford 4-5 times a year. It's a great design but plagued with some poor management. My issues this year have been with bunker maintenance, cart management, and pace of play. It seems the bunkers are groomed no more than once or twice a week, which is poor for a good charging a premium rate. More often than not, ball is in a rain rut or footprint in bunker. I've had issues with afternoon rounds-no carts available and required, or a cart that doesn't have enough battery to complete the round and we have to call into pro shop for replacement. It would seem a company like Billy Caspar Golf would have enough working equipment to support play. Lastly, rounds here can be brutally slow. I played one weekend afternoon and it took 5:20. I spoke to the ranger twice and he said there was a tourney ahead and he wasn't going to do anything about it. Long rounds are the norm here.

Good news is nice layout - generous fairways, fast undulating greens, good mix of short and long holes. Greens can be hard at times and won't hold an approach if it hasn't rained in a while. It could be one of the best public tracks in CT with some care and attention. I don't know if they don't want to invest in maintenance (bunkers/carts) or just poorly managed.

Not a destination course

I'm a fan of Seth Raynor courses - he built this around the same time as Yale (#55 course in US, # 1 college course.) Unfortunately, this is no Yale. The course suffers from limited irrigation- it looked like greens complexes only. By September the course was burnt out and overcome by crabgrass. Greens were lush and slow, and a few had unusual features like a hump/ridge running across the green. Like Yale, there's a few blind shots - greens on 3, 4, drive on 9. I walked the course, there's some long walks between holes, and a couple steep up hills.

There's no amenities to speak of, just a tiny clubhouse and putting green. The pro was very nice, walked me through the routing so I wouldn't get lost, and when finished asked me if I enjoyed the round. Clearly they don't have a budget for great maintenance, and fees were only $20 for 18 holes. It's a nice walk with a couple holes with gorgeous lake or pond views. I drove an hour to play the course - not really worth the trip. Stoneybrook is a much better 9 holes in Litchfield county.

Don't be fooled (by the yardage)

Before we started, we looked atthe scorecard and saw the back tee yardage was only 6000 yards. Those tees were challenging, with a number of par 4 holes over 400 yards and par 3's over 180. What i missed was that the course was only par 69, with no par 5's on the back. We played on a windy October day, leaves and pine needles were everywhere - not the courses fault. There were lots of tight dogleg holes, and greens were very fast and sloped. Overall course conditions were good, not great. At $50 with cart its a good value - would like to play there again knowing where the doglegs go.
