very good "winter" golf conditions...

Overall staff were very friendly.

The course was in very good condition, especially considering the recent heavy rainfall. Greens are in very good shape, especially for this time of year, still with good speed and rolling true.

Pace of play was not very good. There were at couple of groups in front of us that had players that appeared to have never even swung a club before, including a guy that swung and completely missed the ball at least 25 times during the round. While we patiently waited on nearly every shot. NEVER, I repeat NEVER saw a ranger or marshal on the golf course throughout the entire round.

There was also no beverage cart service.

It seems that things have been stepped down a few notches since they are no longer hosting the PGA tour event.

Another example...range balls. They used to be there stacked up for player warm up. Now, you have to pay for them in advance in the pro shop. At this level of golf club, and at this price point, it is surprising that corporate now feels the need to nickel and dime the golfer. But, that is what I was told..."it's corporate's policy."

Love the course, but the 'experience' is not what it used to be.

nice muni...need local knowledge...

First time out at Sharpstown. It was in pretty good shape for a municipal course.

The greens were in pretty good shape and had decent speed.
Fairways were ok.
Bunkers were Covid style--unraked.
Tee boxes needed a little work.

Some doglegs and holes with trees in the middle of the fairway required some local knowledge as to what the best play was. Overall the course was playable, and I'll definitely go back.

No driving range, limited carts, and limited amenities. There was no on course beverage/snack cart. Not sure if this is all the time or just because of Covid.

The staff was friendly and helpful, with maybe the exclusion of the ancient that was acting as the starter--kind of clueless--wasn't sure what group was on the tee, couldn't answer any questions...at all and had taken no health safety precautions, not even a mask, not really the ideal plan when interacting with every player.

conditions were very good...

While I've played the South course several times before, this was the first time out on the North.

The overall conditions on the course were good.
The grass was very good everywhere. The greens were receptive, well groomed and rolled nicely.

The loss of a star comes from the bunkers being absolutely atrocious. Totally untouched for quite some time, not maintained by grounds keeping,
and unraked (even though rakes were present) with many washed out. COVID-19 not withstanding, they should have been better than this, especially at the price point of the greens fee.

Pace of play was very good. But, the group in front of us consisted of two golfers, with two non-golfer cart riders. On the twelfth hole, the two women riders decided that they should start hacking it around and caused significant delays in play. They were obviously not golfers, swinging and missing, dribbling or skulling the ball on most contact, leaving the cart parked in the middle of the fairway in the approach area of the green while chasing the ball around....etc...
No clubs, not properly dressed, and very unlikely to have paid greens fees?

While this is a problem no matter what, it wouldn't have been an issue for us if they had kept the pace of play and stayed in contact with the group in front of them. But, by the time we had reached 18 there were just under three holes between them and the group in front. It was just ridiculous, especially at a golf club at this level.

The only other issue was lack of mask wearing in the clubhouse, customers, not staff.

muni golf...

I got a good price on a Hot Deal for a 10a weekend tee time. So, figured that I'd try Bayou for a second time hoping that the course would be a little better at this time of year. Not so much.

It's a municipal golf course. So, no real amenities to speak of, small clubhouse, small limited pro shop, very small restaurant / grill area.

The golf course was in pretty rough shape overall. The fairways had a lot of barren areas with no grass at all and where there was grass, there were plenty of weeds mixed in.

At this point in the year, especially with the weather we have had, there isn't really an excuse not to have decent greens. That being said, they were pretty bad. Not sure if they were just aerated at the wrong time, or not top dressed properly, but they have not come back. Very bumpy and uneven at best.

I'm not privy to the financial situation, but all of the issues are most likely budget related.

If you don't have another option, golfing here is better than not golfing. But, that's where I'd leave it.

skip it for now...it will be months before the greens will be playable...

I've played here many times since moving to Texas 8 years ago.
This is the worst that I have ever seen this place!

Took the hour and fifteen minute drive up from Houston in the expectation of similar conditions, if not better, than those previously experienced, especially since the change in ownership and the supposed $130 MILLION in renovations to the resort facility.

Obviously they chose not to spend any of that on anything to do with the golf course. It was in the worst condition that I have ever seen it. I was embarrassed that I brought my cousin and our spouses here for our Father's Day round when we got together on Saturday.

Let's start at the beginning, the club house is locked. So, no access to the rest room after being in the car for 75 minutes. I understand that precautions need to be taken under the current COVID-19 situation. But, no restrooms? Really?

We check in and get our keys to the golf carts. And now the contradiction to the previous position--the golf carts in the row that we walked to were filthy. So, we walk to the next cart area and the young man moving carts advises us to take a cart from the other line, that these haven't been cleaned yet. The carts had debris, spillage and dirt on them and clearly had not been cleaned, let alone disinfected or even washed. So, much for the COVID concern! We spent the next 15 minutes cleaning the carts prior to use, which combined with having to leave the course to get a bathroom for the ladies, then took any available time to warm up on the range away...smh.

Ok...whatever...it's about the golf anyway.

So, we head to the first tee and off we go.

I'm going to be brief because there really isn't much good coming.

The tee boxes overall were in poor condition, unfilled divots, weeds, grass of varying heights...

Fairways were spotty and also weeded.

Bunkers were unmaintained, some had some sand, some not so much, and didn't appear to have been attended to recently.

Now all of this can be somewhat overlooked if the greens are good. Nope. Not even close. These could be the worst greens that I've played on in the eight years that I've been playing in TX. Especially in comparison to how they have been in the past, and at the supposed quality of this golf resort.

Some had as much fungus as grass. There were literally dozens if not hundreds of mushrooms growing on several of the greens. At first I thought that they were rocks from the trap that maybe had been sprayed onto the green from a bunker shot and then rolled in when mower went over them. But, when I stuck the divot tool in to remove them from my line, mushrooms! lol / smh Not that it mattered much, there wasn't enough grass to put anyway, leaving them so bumpy that even a tap in was a risky endeavor.

Even the cart paths have gone to crap. In some places they are so bumpy and broken up that you just have to get off the path to not get tossed around.

It is a shame that this course has been allowed to get into this poor condition.

I waited a couple of days to post this review in an effort to gain some perspective and not be overly critical. So, just imagine how this would have gone had I written it right after the round!

Very disappointing to say the least.

In a game that etiquette, honesty and integrity are the norm and expected of participants, it seems to me that reciprocity should be required, and the course should be held to the same standard and advise players of any less than acceptable course conditions prior to taking our money.

One last note, they allowed a six-some. Bad enough if it was midweek, but on a holiday weekend, come on.

renovations revived this track...

I had heard that Gus Wortham had been brought back to life with a much needed renovation. That was an understatement.

The good:

The course is in great condition. The greens are still very firm and hopefully they'll soften a little bit to be at least somewhat receptive. If not, oh well, you will need to make the adjustment! They rolled very well, nice and smooth. Good grass everywhere, and the bunkers were as they should be.

Don't think at this yardage that this will be a simple round. The shorter card distance is an illusion. It plays plenty long, with several of the long par 4s being absolute bears from the back..

The not so good:

Sadly, the course is operating out of temporary trailers, is completely understaffed, and somewhat disorganized. I know it's a muni, expectations shouldn't be that high. I'll leave it at that and give them a chance to get that part figured out. Not a huge deal for me, as the golf is why I'm there.

If you haven't been out to the "new Gus Wortham," you are missing out! I fully recommend that you give it a go.

First visit...ok..will give it another shot...

It was the first visit to Bayou Golf Course for everyone in our foursome.

The course had a decent layout. It was very flat, and mostly open, with water coming into play often. It's not too far from the coast. So, there is likely to be a breeze on most days. This is nice in providing a little relief from the heat, and it gives the course an additional bit of protection from a mostly straightforward layout.

This rating should be a 3.5. Unfortunately, that is not an option. The conditions on the day of play prevent me from going to a 4, so 3 is what it gets.

It appears to be a course of moderate means. So, budget constraints may play a role. There was crab grass throughout the fairways and the greens were not very good. It appeared to mostly be that the winter grass was still there and dry, and the summer grass was dormant and had not come in yet, and there were some bare spots. Whatever the reason, they just were not that good overall.

The clubhouse is very modest, as was the grill/lounge area.

Staff in both the pro shop and the grill were friendly.

This review is based solely on today's visit. That being said, we will give it another try. If the greens have come in, it will be worth it--provided it's at a reasonable price.

3 stars for winter golf, probably 4 when it warms up...

Took the drive up to Hempstead last Friday to check out Legendary Oaks. It was worth the trip and I'll be going back for sure.

Although some serious money must have been spent to build this course and all of the water features it has throughout the layout, it's obvious that the current budget is not on par with the construction budget.

It is still winter golf, so conditions were as such. But, the layout is nice. The par threes are pretty demanding and there are several holes that pose significant challenges. We played the tips at over 7,000 yds. and it requires you to be able to move the ball both ways to be able to score. There were also a couple of very tight tee shots required and water hazards run throughout the course. The greens were in good condition, again, winter golf, and the fairways were ok. But, overall, the whole golf course, as with many others, could use a little more money in the maintenance budget. Play the ball up and don't worry about it! lol

The woman in the small clubhouse was very friendly, and prices were very reasonable.

They even have a small chapel on the property. So, you can stop and pray for a couple of birdies if you need to!

It's a good value for the money and I look forward to going back when "green" spring/summer conditions arrive.

Winter greens were in great shape, but very fast!!!

I played yesterday. It was a little cool, and a lot windy!

The course is in the midst of an ongoing housing development, but doesn't have that feeling. The design isn't cramped by the homes. They have made good use of the land to not have the layout compromised by the residential real estate.
Overall it's a nice facility. The clubhouse isn't ostentatious by any means. But, gets the job done. There is a small pro shop and small snack bar positioned between the nines.

It is still winter golf. So, playing conditions are just that. The course was in very good condition for the time of year. The greens were unbelievably FAST!!! I think that I have putted on kitchen floors that might have been slower! Three birdies and three three putts!!! One downhill putt that I barely touched from about 30 feet went 20 feet past the hole! lol Probably somewhere between 12-14 on the stimp meter!!! Maybe more! With the grass being very dry and dormant, add in a little down hill and down wind, and there was nothing to help slow the ball down. I'm anxious to play here under normal conditions.

The layout was challenging enough. But had plenty of opportunities for scoring. Some "local knowledge" is a bonus on a couple of holes. Especially two of the par 5s. The 2nd hole is a par 5 with water down the whole right side and a dogleg to the right at the end before the green. I hit my drive down the middle. Hit a hybrid to lay up at 100, right down the middle. And when I got up there, a tree on the right side of the fairway to the left of the water completely blocked any approach to the green!!! lol Easy to avoid, but you have to know that it is there! There was another one on the back that got me as well.

There are courses that are a little less expensive to play for sure. But, for the few extra bucks, if you play a better course, it's worth it.

I'll be back to play here again for sure.

nice layout, great value, friendly people...

Played here again yesterday. I've played here several times now, and keep going back, and surely will be back again.
The course is in pretty good winter golf condition. The greens were in better than average shape and consistent speed. The fairways are being plug aerated and the plugs are everywhere. Seems to me they should be swept up and used to fill in areas in need. But, doesn't seem like it's going to happen. The holes done on previous days had flattened, dried out, aeration plug chunks all over them, to be left on their own. Hopefully they won't be left in place long enough to affect the turf underneath?
The staff as usual was helpful, friendly and courteous and worth an extra half star! 3.5!

familiar holes....

Great day of golf yesterday.
The Tour 18 delivers a unique golf experience, duplicating 18 of America's most famous golf holes. Including holes from Doral, Inverness, Bay Hill, Pinehurst, Augusta National and more. So, the layout is tried and true and will give you all you can handle from whatever tee box you choose.
The course is always in good condition, from the fairways to the rough and bunkers, and the greens are always really nice.
A little noisy with the air traffic today. The low cloud ceiling and the direction of the wind had the flight line over the golf course all day. But, that is about the only thing that you would want to change.
Very friendly staff, from the pro shop, to the starter and the beverage cart girl, everyone had a smile and wanted to take care of you.
I've played here a handful of times during my visits to the Houston area over the years, and now that I live here and not that far away, I am sure that I'll be playing here more!
