Great layout, but jammed!

Positive: Great layout featuring hilly terrain, elevations, and tricky greens. Fairways and greens were in great condition. Green speeds were average to slow on the day we played, but they rolled well. Can’t say enough about the friendly and helpful staff. Dead wiry rough at this time of year makes controlling your shot more difficult.

Negative: Played on a Tuesday. Course was jammed and play was really slow. We started as a foursome at 2:00 and were not playing particularly fast, but we still waited on every tee and came in at 6:50. Never saw a ranger. Saw the refreshment cart twice.

Bland design, relatively featureless

Agree with others, this is not a 4-star course. Regarding the design, there are a few water holes, including a par 3 with an island green, but the rest all look the same. A number of elevated greens. There was sparse turf in some places, but the fairways were good quality overall. The greens were mowed very short and probably stimped at about a 10, quite quick. Coarse bunker sand, bordering on gravel. There are huge expanses of dormant fluff-type rough, and also expanses of desert sand with almost no vegetation except for an occasional tree. There was essentially no turf on the driving range, mostly hitting off sand. Basically muni-level quality overall.

Very friendly staff, both in and out of the clubhouse.

Average course, but appropriate for the money

Spotty rough. Fairways grown a bit long. Greens pretty good. Not a great course, looks like the superintendent just doesn’t have the budget, but a decent play at $40-45.

Interesting layout, poorly maintained

There are a number of holes with interesting features on this course. Because of the relatively low green fee, the course is usually full with a lot of groups. Played in a foursome in about four hours and 20 minutes, with a few waits here and there.

The main problem with the course is that it has not been properly maintained. You're basically hitting off sand on the practice range. On the course, bare areas are found on most holes, particularly on high-traffic areas around bunkers. Grass on the greens and fairways is fairly decent, but thin. In many of the bunkers, there is perhaps a half inch of sand overlying packed dirt beneath, making your wedge bounce off.

All in all, this is a course that has seen better days.

Basic course with some interesting holes

No-frills course with traditional holes laid out in a links-style out-and-back configuration. Even though the quality of the turf is not as good as it is at some other courses, it is quite fun to play and relatively easy, even from the tips. Strategically placed trees add to the challenge on many holes. Most of the greens are relatively flat and roll quite well. Very friendly staff, very helpful. They do not have a range, but they do have a practice net and a chipping range. Good value for the money.

Gargantuan mountain course

This is a unique golf club, starting with a long driveway up the mountain that ends at a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed clubhouse. Definitely a high-end feel, but everyone is very down-to-earth and helpful. As a single on a weekday afternoon in early December, got around in two and a half hours. The course is built on the side of the mountain, with majestic views, big elevation changes, and no flat lies. Greens, fairways, and rough were all in excellent condition; the bunkers were somewhat uneven in quality. Did better on the back nine after I learned to go up about three clubs into the elevated greens. Great challenge, great fun. Not cheap, but worth the experience.

Cheap practice course

Average to below average muni quality. Three or four interesting holes. Bare spots throughout the course. The greens ran true for the most part. Staff were friendly. Pace of play on a weekday afternoon in early December was right on 4 hours. I would say it's a good practice course for the first day of a golf trip, given the cheap green fee.

Imaginative layout; average upkeep

This was my second time playing the Palm course. The course layout is interesting and several of the holes are even memorable. As noted by others, water is used strategically and comes into play on at least one third of the holes. I would say that the overall condition and upkeep of the course is the equivalent of a typical municipal course. There are a number of bare areas where there has obviously been no attempt to grow grass, even in areas close to the greens. The golf staff gave the impression of being indifferent, but the staff at the snack bar and on the drink cart were very friendly. Pace of play on a busy Saturday afternoon was 4 hours and 25 minutes. All in all, an average-to-good golf experience.

Pretty course and moderately challenging

Five tee choices makes this a great choice for players of all abilities. Lots of water, but it often doesn't come into play. Playing in early May, the course was in good condition, but the pace of play was extremely slow and we never saw a ranger. The staff, of course, said this was atypical. I would play this course again, but you will want to check to see whether they have sent any groups out ahead of you.
