Meadows Golf Club
Played On 07/05/2022Short track but fun
None of the holes are the distance they say - many are much shorter. For example, I had 100 yards in on a par 5 that was over 500 yards. But, the greens protect that decently well. The greens are slow but in good shape. Have fun with it, great value course and an easy drive.

Great practice course- awesome for the price. Always can get on. Few of the longer holes are as long as they say - all par 5 reachable in two for above average golfer. Greens are a bit slow but consistent.

Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course
Played On 04/15/2022Nickel and Dime you to death
- do not play after it rains. Course has a really hard time draining.
- tee boxes are a mess. One doesn’t exist and 10 is a sandbox. Others are very patchy.
- course nickel and dimes you to death. Hot Dog 6.50. Only public courses that charges to park ($3). $45 to walk and another $20 to ride. They do it because it’s super convenient, but if you want bang for your buck go somewhere in queens or out of the city. $75 can get you a lot of course that’s better than here.
Dyker Beach Golf Course
Played On 08/10/2021Struggling like other public courses
I read the 3 star review, and knew it was because people were just bitter about nyc public courses and what the pandemic did. I wanted to make sure that the course was legit 3 stars. It was.
Pros:
Grass is grown in everywhere, very green
Layout is fair for all golfers of all levels
Carts were fast, check in was easy
Greens are undulating, but in a fun way.
They try to send foursomes off together, making singles wait for bigger groups.
Cons:
Bunkers were all large and in great spots on the golf course…but in poor disrepair.
Greens were slooooooow.
Rough was long, which made it difficult, but it seemed like they were long out of neglect and not intentional difficulty.
No ranger. We were clipping along as a foursome great for 14 holes, then the last 4 took 60 min because the mixed foursome in front of us were not good but they thought it was the US open.
Where there is no grass (like some tee boxes) there is sand. Which I don’t have to tell you changes the way you hit a shot.
It has a lot of potential to be great and looks like at one time it was. It has an old clubhouse and needs some investment. Price is fair - $40 for a cart at 1227 is probably one of the best in the city.
Forest Park Golf Course
Played On 07/09/2021Drained well
Played this literally the afternoon after Elsa left town. For as much rain as we got (and what some places in NYC looked like) the golf course was in great shape. Some tee boxes are still under repair. Many yardage signs are way over yardage. And the greens are so incredibly sloooow, even without the rain. But other than that, it’s a good layout that is challenging in some places and rewarding in others.
Forest Park Golf Course
Played On 06/19/2021Great shape
Course has a couple dead tees, but it looked like they were rehabilitating the longer tees and then would switch it around at a later date. Course is in great shape, especially when you compare to other city park courses. Great challenge. Play was slow on a Saturday but that’s to be expected with the amount of people there on Father’s Day weekend.
Sprain Lake Golf Course
Played On 06/07/2021Short but fun
We played through a storm. So the leaves being all over the place is no ones fault. However a couple of the greens on the back were WAAY faster than the rest of the course, which didn’t make sense and is frustrating when it isn’t consistent with the other SLOOW greens. Other than that, it’s a short course that requires accuracy.
Hi linerspeedy3, we are sorry to see that your overall experience was anything short of 5 stars. We hope you'll give us another try in the near future.
Somers National Golf Club
Played On 06/16/2020Course is an afterthought
1. Course is a trap for walking. It is insanely undulating, like not one flat area ANYWHERE in the course. Then, they'll charge you $30 to cart it up. So it's a trap. Don't walk it. I did, felt it for three days.
2. Club has this air that the housing development came first, then added the golf course to try to make it more "private". Club screams that it wants to be private but financially can't.
3. If you are going to allow walking as a GC, then at least give them a guide. I had probably 4-5 tee shots that I thought were perfect, but were OB/Red stake/Lost because there is NO HOLD IN ANY FAIRWAY. I get difficult, but this wasn't difficult fun. This was difficult for the sake of being difficult. Course needs water BAD. I only had all pars, three doubles (thanks layout) and two bogeys.
4. Greens are like playing putt putt. Too fast, not consistent, and impossible to read because of the inconsistency. So you just tap everything and hope for the best, even uphill - 14 stemp easy. Par 5's have such extreme dog legs that you have to hit irons off the tees. There are two drivable par 4's on the back that should have probably been designed as a par 3 and a longer par 4. It's like the architect didn't know what he was doing on some of the holes. All the holes are risk and no reward for the risk except the short par 4's.
5. If I am putting the 50+ minute drive from northern Manhattan to go play, I will go to Bethpage, Van Courtland, Hudson Valley, The Garrison 100x before coming to this course. It just simply isn't a lot of fun. Why make a 500+ double dogleg par 5 and make me hit iron off the tee?
Good experience, but I wouldn't play this course again unless I really had to.
Oak Hills Park Golf Course
Played On 08/05/2020Great condition
Played this course day after the hurricane rolled through. Tree fell on front side so we played back twice. They did clean the front by 4 in the afternoon.
Somers National Golf Club
Played On 06/18/2020Don’t go if you don’t like undulations
1. Crazy to walk it. Up and down all day. That’s why the walking rate is so low. There is no flatness on the course or greens.
2. Hudson Hills and The Garrison are much better for the money and drive from NYC.
3. Pretty sure this club would not be open to the public if they had the choice. But, they need the money.
4. Greens were rock hard and needed water bad. All pins were on the credits of hills. Even had a member in my group putt 3 feet past the hole, roll back past the hole and end up ten feet on the other side of the whole. That’s not fun challenging. Had no confidence in any putt because it was a crap shoot how it would react.
5. Design is weird. Can’t hit driver on any par 5 because lay of the land and design won’t let you hit it further than 250 at most. It’s all risk and virtually no reward. And if you’re going to make people walk, give them a guide. I hit 5-6 great shots off the tee and got penalized for it because I simply didn’t know the distance or what the course looked like.
Great experience but probably wouldn’t drive back there.
Garrison Golf Club
Played On 06/09/2020Tight and slick, but a nice challenge
Greens on the front were really slick, at least 12 stimp when we played. Hard to lag anything, they need water. 10/11 needs the rough cut back because I lost two balls that weren’t hit that bad, and found 3 that weren’t mine, so I wasn’t the only one having that problem. Other than that, great experience. Greens protect the shorter holes and require accurate approaches
Meadows Golf Club
Played On 08/05/2019Progress is being made, short but fun.
Pros:
- course is clearly being attempted to be turned around. There are beautiful bunkers...then ones water logged.
- there are decent tee boxes...then ones full of weeds.
- greens are SOLID! Perfect speed and hold.
- come early, pro let me go off the back and cruise through there until I hit a wall of foursomes on the front.
- holes are short but the placement of hazards is very strategic.
Cons:
-Tee yardages are very incorrect. 12 says it’s 495 from the blues, par 4. Plays more like 425. Next hole says it’s 535 par 5. More like 450. Those are just two examples. I had 170 in on 13, I can’t hit it 360.
- water needs to be treated or they need fountains. They are a green swampy mess.
- need new scorecards. That’s the only guide for a new golfer at a new course, and they also aren’t accurate. For example, I striped a 3 word right down the middle on #4...into a creek not on the card.
- some holes don’t have any yardage sticks in the fairway, so you’re eyeballing distance.
Fun course, they just need time and a little more investment. Clubhouse is small, but looks new and able to hold a small party. Also have a NJ handicap entry computer.
Thanks for the thorough review, Speedy. We hope to see you again soon!
Hudson Hills Golf Course
Played On 07/30/2019Great shape
Tight fairways, fair hazards, hard, quick, responsive greens. Not for the faint of heart, but it was a very challenging and fun course.
Incredible hot deal. Worth it and then some.

Garrison Golf Club
Played On 07/08/2019Slowest Greens
Pros:
Tight course
Great views, quaint
Very quiet
Cons:
Weedy rough, lost balls when in play (found a lot too, so this must happen a lot)
Slowest greens I’ve played in New York. Makes the undulations in the greens almost impossible as you take a full backswing on your putts
Had just cut grass, clippings everywhere
For $55, I could’ve played Bethpage.
Canewood Golf Course
Played On 07/29/2016Not bad
Course is a neat, tight, smaller course. Whole play all around is really cool, but their tee boxes are a mess, although it looks like they are trying to repair them.
