Good value

A good value course with a great chipping area. Three or four greens always seem worse than the rest but (apart from those) the greens are generally good and the course is lovely.

Wow

I arrived having booked my round to be told that I had been put with 3 strangers - not ideal but I agreed initially as I understand that courses can get busy. The guy in the pro shop then told me that he didn't know who the 3 people were...what they looked like, where they were etc so I'm not sure how I was supposed to locate them. This told me two things.
1. He hadn't actually booked me in with them prior to my arrival as they weren't aware I was playing with them (and they had signed in)
2. He wasn't willing to locate these people even though presumably he had served them (as they had arrived before me).

He said that if I wanted to wait 1 hour and 40 minutes I could still play without the others. At this stage I decided I would like a refund (shouldn't be too difficult right?)

The pro was unable to do this. He spoke to another admin person who was also unable. THey took my details saying they would refund me. Two days later I have received no news about the refund and suspect I shall have to chase myself.

The course looked nice from the little I saw...but I have rated everything I did not get the chance to use as 3 star...I didn't see it properly after all. I would advise that in future the club look at online bookings at the beginning of the day so that others don't waste a trip. I wasted 40 minutes of driving each way and currently I even paid the club for the 'privilege'. I gave them two and a half days to contact me to resolve the situation. They have not.

Brocket Hall

A good course but (despite this time of year) I expected it to be in better condition. When paying premium prices (it would have been £100 if I had booked ten mins earlier) you expect the best and this isn't it. Actually finding the club house is difficult enough and the layout of the (admittedly cast) place seems confusing to a newcomer. The course was shortened by about 1000 yards I would estimate which is a bit much in my opinion. I understand the time of year it difficult but it felt like for the premium prices being paid I deserved more. The staff are very friendly and it certainly looks like a very nice place to eat etc but when compared to similarly priced places (such as the Grove) this falls somewhat short for me. A nice place to visit, but I'm not sure the golf is the prime focus here.

An experience I will never forget

If I had to sum up this golf course in one phrase I would have to say ‘out of this world’ because the green-keeper must be from another planet. It’s quite simply unlike any other course I’ve ever played. ‘Unique’ does not do it justice. Many courses claim to have a course that challenges all levels of golfers but this one REALLY DOES!
Without doubt the strangest element (of which there are many) are the greens. I personally believe that whoever maintains these greens deserves a medal. The foresight they have is truly mind-blowing – industry leading in fact. Most golf courses have greens that roll fairly straight (boring I know!) not this one though. Through a fantastic combination of completely spike marked greens and strangely placed pins it is simply impossible to get the ball into the hole.
Don’t like golf, well don’t worry, Blakes Golf Club also provides a great orienteering experience for all the family. Guessing your way around the course until you (eventually) find your way to the next hole really is fun and a marketing opportunity missed by many other ‘top quality’ golf clubs.
Blakes Golf Course – an experience unlike any other in golf. The experience was so fantastic that we left after 11 holes, why not see how far you can get?

Having played Blakes through some of the worst weather the course, itself was surprisingly good.
The fairways had water on understandably, greens well they was exceptional, quick true and a lot of work being done on the course as well.
I for one cannot wait to play Blakes in the better weather would like to thank the green staff for all the work they are doing to keep the course moving forward, to make this course one of if not the best in Essex

Disappointed

I've played the courses here before. They are lovely. I booked a round (oneball) all set up ready to go. I then received a phone call asking me to alter the time of my round... I did so.

I arrived and it immediately became clear that I was not going to be able to play 18 due to the course being completely rammed. I had expected the new time I had been given would be quieter, it wasnt. I joined up with two members who were lovely and the course was great but all in all I paid 45 pounds for a long, infuriating experience despite changing my time for them and allowing two members to share my tee time!

Par 3 Course?

I have played the par 3 course at this golf club. As far as I remember there are only two courses. The main one...and this one. So calling this a 'short course' is in my opinion no ok. I nearly booked it again this year thinking a new course had being built.

Good course

Challenging for the amateur. Bunkers and other traps set at difficult yardages. You have to think your way around here. Greens were lovely. Possibly on a par with essendon in many aspects. Staff were friendly as well.

Good value

A good value course. Well maintained for the price you pay and nice bar. Would advise them to get rid of what they call the 'short game area' it's pretty disappointing/ shocking when compared to the average course facilities and take away from what is a nice course.
