Poor Alternative

We were so happy to get an early morning tee time at another course--when we learned that our original course to play was closed due aeration. We were welcomed by the clubhouse staff and shown the amenities in doors. However--the outdoor staff (the starter in particular) was unprofessional and uncommunicative. We put out bags on the rack in front of him. He explained that we weren't on the t-sheet and so he wouldn't let us load our bags onto carts. Several minutes latter he said that he would load the bags himself only when he was "good and ready". The course was newly mowed and none of the clippings had been removed. The practice chipping and putting areas were each covered in an inch of new grass clippings. The tee boxes and greens landing areas were bare. The price was low--but the experience was bad. This whole course should have been closed and under repair!

Don’t try to over power this course!

The starter told me that the course was hard. He said don’t try to over power thus course because she will eat your balls every time. He meant well and I took his advice. I didn’t hold back but I didn’t play for distance. Instead I played for accuracy on every hole. My score was 85 ( I am a lady golfer with 25 handicap). I was very pleased.

Nice Course,, Great staff,

This was a very nice course that is tucked away at Lake Jordan. I grabbed an early tee-time and was paired with 3 men.. I was the only one of the 4-some who played all 18 holes. This is a challenging course because of deep soft roughs ( it’s easy to plug your ball), strategically placed forced carries over streams and gorges. The course winds between houses - but it was easy to keep the ball in play . I lost 1 ball on a 90 yard forced carry over a gorge— my partner lost 13! . I played the round in 3hours 45 minutes. I never saw anyone in front of or in back of me. I suggest you bring your own snacks because the dining options are not great and there is no place nearby to eat.
The staff was very friendly and the starter made my golf day very enjoyable

Thank you for the 4 star review! Your assessment of the course is very good, while tough it is a very good layout! We do apologize for the limitations of our food and beverage selection, we have been short staffed and have since improved our operations.

Nice course

I played The Falls Village Course on 12/4 with two gentleman. We started at 1:45 and ended shortly after Sun down. Pace. Of play was ok for the front 9– but it was agonizing on the back. We wanted to finish before the light failed but we were following very closely on the heels of two other 4-somes.

The back 9 has 3 dog-leg par 4s in a row. These blind shots are challenging — and most golfers navigate them very slowly. One of the back 9 holes was over water and it played from the whites at about 160yards. Exhilarating! . I played the last hole as the light was failing . Made the green in 2 with precision shots , a wish, and a prayer. The grounds staff was very gracious and didn’t make a fuss when we arrived after dark.

I could easily play this course in about 3.5 hours if there was no waiting During winter hours - I suggest starting before 1:00 so as to catch the light.

Olde Liberty-needs improvement

I played this course for the first time on a Friday at .7:30am I’m the morning. As a lady golfer, new to NC, I was hoping to have a relaxing round of 18 holes through this beautiful riparian course.

When I arrived , the computer was down so I checked in but no one could say if I had been paired with anyone for my round. There was no starter sheet. There was another gentleman there who stated that he played the course often, had the same start time, but insisted on going off alone. I let him get ahead and went off after him— keeping him in sight for the entire round. The course had some delightful forced carries and interesting approaches. The out of bounds were really wild but it was easy to stay away from them. However once in awhile I found myself in high grass that should have been marked as out of bounds.

The first hole from the yellow and white tees was refreshing and I made it in 4 . However, there had been rain the night before— and the course did not drain. On the next hole I lost my ball in some deep water in a sand trap! I thought of wading into the water to hunt for my ball— but I could not reach the depths with my longest club.

Hole #12 was horrible. There had been some major erosion on the hill to the left of the green. Even though the signs for “No CARTs beyond this point” we’re out- they were not sufficient. The wheels of my cart was caught on the eroding downslope and my wheels spun for a second or 2 without gripping . I thought my cart was going to turnover!

After that I noticed the signs of erosion at every transition. There are wooden bridges between holes. The planks of the bridges had been chewed up with wear and every one of them needs to be replaced. You can see through the planks to the ground beneath.

The last hole #18 was very pleasant. This hole requires a carry over a depression of trees onto an upsloping fairway. A 200 yard hit put me in great shape to make par. This was the only fairway that was drained well enough for me to use my fairway wood. The next shot of 180 yards put me within winking distance of the green ( and my “partner”) . I wondered why the grounds crew did not work as hard on holes 2-17 as they seem to have done on holes 1 and 18.

Post game, there was no food. I had my bag of nuts and bottle of water . I caught up with the gentlemen who played before and after me. Both admitted that they play Old Liberty often but that they believed that the course was not well kept. They played because it wasn’t crowded. We joked about loosing a ball or two due to drainage— and that’s when they told me about the snakes. On other courses the management places signs to warn about critters that could challenge a golfer. This is the least that Olde Liberty could do.

Dorado Beach— sugar cane plantation

Known around here as the sugarcane course, this TPC plays beautifully from the forward tees. The reviews say it is very challenging — but I am a high handicap ( 20) golfer from the northeast— and I loved the wide fairways, level lies, and a little water once in a while. My only problem was puddles on the front 9’. I guess there has been so much rain and the front 9 had area.s of standing water that seemed to swallow balls. Once I figured that out it was smooth sailing. Very friendly staff. Attentive without being all over you
