Heritage Hill Golf Club
Played On 10/20/2018Long Fury Day
My regular playing partner and I arrived looking forward to playing this track based off the reviews and things we have heard through others. We tees off Saturday morning at 11:00.
The staff was friendly upon arrival and the amenities were adequate. The putting green appeared to have not been mowed, no big deal. We arrived the first green and the turf apperead extremely unhealthy. There were many bare spots and the presence of fungus was overwhelming.
My thoughts were maybe it was due to the recent rain and overcast days. Upon playing the second and third hole the green complexes conditions seemend to deteriorate. The greens were shaggy and had no turf in areas. The superintendent is definitely struggling with some poor health and fungus of on the putting surfaces. I am aware that weather conditions have some impact of turf conditions, but this is well beyond that. Being a class A member of the PGA & GCSA I have seen many examples of this through my career.
That being said the layout of the holes and architecture are extremely good. Good shots are rewarded, bad shots are punished and this is a very playable course for the average golfer.
The pace of play was agoniging. We played the out nine in 2:15, and the inward nine was a painfully slow 3:45. We never once saw a member of the golf staff out on the golf course. The course was playing tough with blustery winds, but this is no excuse to have 6 groups (2-foursomes, 3-threesomes, & 1-twosome) on two holes.
I might think about revisiting this course in the future, but it will be with an early tee time. I will definitely investigate the turf conditions prior to booking. Overall I give this a rating of (2) based on value compared to other courses in the same price range.
