Quick,

This executive length course is like the perfect "practice" course to keep you sharp. Rounds are quick with most of the holes being pretty short, but there is still some challenge. Not terribly hard, but there are some deep bunkers, hard doglegs and a bit of water in play. There are carts available but everyone seems to walk. The course is well kept with great greens, staff is friendly and polite (the starter had a slow moment and fished out a ball and came and found us to return it - I mean that is for sure above-and-beyond!) Decent value. Not cheap, but not expensive - especially if you're walking.

Mixed bag, but mostly good.

Overall pretty OK. It was convenient and relatively inexpensive, but I wouldn't go expecting any great level of service.

Pros:
Course was cute, manageable, appeared well maintained (we played in February in Chicago, so hard to really tell). Relatively easy (except the narrow fairways). Interior facilities were a little 90's-ish but clean and adequate.
Cons:
You had better not have a bad draw or a slice because the homes that line the course are practically on the fairway.
The staff was a little -meh-. The gentleman who checked us in, while polite, was clearly overwhelmed with 2 people in line and the phone ringing.
Secondly, my car was hit in the parking lot while I was golfing and I went inside to let them know and I was met with a shoulder shrug and they were like "sorry, we don't have cameras." No offer to call the police or to take my name in case someone said something later, no incident report, no nothing. Even if the guy had been a little more sympathetic that would have been something, but he really offered nothing.

Great value, super staff.

Pros:
Quick 9 hole course that is a part of the Winnetka Park District. Accessible, easy parking, not busy (even on an early weekend morning), inexpensive, suuuuper nice staff, good variety on each hole, great spot for short game practice. Mostly level (except for the 7th hole) and easy to walk, even if you aren't used to walking. The course's walking carts appeared to be nice quality.

The staff in the proshop let me use their bug spray because they were sold out and also encouraged me to have fun, play a little scramble to practice as much as I wanted because I was on my own and the course was not busy. Asked me how I did after and were so friendly.

Cons: Roughs were very weedy and buggy, laid out a little funky and could use a little better signage, almost missed the 8th hole.

Beautifully Maintained, Cute, Challenging, Nice Staff, & Good Value

This course is like a mini Harborside. Its only "executive" length, but hard and fun. Perfect greens and lovely fairways, hilly, lots sand and hazards. I loved it. Got paired up with an experienced golfer who felt it was really challenging as well. Staff in the pro shop was lovely (Welcome! Was it my first time there? Have fun! then when I came in it was all "How was it? Hope to see you soon!")

Cons:
The shared greens thing is a little weird and we were behind a slow group and there was no ranger or starter, so that was kind of annoying. The 9 holes at 7am on a short course with 2 decent golfers really took us way too long - close to 2 hours. This was probably mostly being unlucky to be behind a bad group, but still took something away from the round.

I bought a GolfNow deal that included a riding cart, but I was the only one with a cart out in the early morning. Literally everyone else was walking so I felt a little silly. It is somewhat long and hilly, so might be not as fun to walk if you're used to riding.

Perfection for solo play on 9 Holes in the early morning

I was meeting a friend in the burbs for brunch, so I booked a tee time at the crack of dawn here and it was exactly what I love about going out early. I was one of the first golfers here and was playing 9 holes on my own so they sent me out to the back 9 to play by myself.
It was wonderful. So quiet, played 9 holes in like an hour, the only people I saw were the groundskeepers. Felt like I owned the place. Nice long holes, challenging greens. Well maintained, not expensive, pleasant staff.
No idea what it is like during the day, but had a nice experience here.

Not sure why I keep going here... the scenery mostly, I guess.

Pros:
Located in the city
Easy parking
Beautiful location on lakefront
Inexpensive

Cons:
Staff is pretty gruff, especially the rangers
Could be maintained better - grass at the edge of the fairway is often too tall to see your ball until you are on top of it
Always crazy crowded
Kind of boring course - pretty flat and few hazards

A little TLC on the course maintenance, a bit more breathing room between golfers and a nicer staff this place could be charging notably more and golfers could be having a much more pleasant experience. Even though the course really isn't remarkable, I would pay more to come here because of the convenience and scenery if it wasn't such a pain in the behind to actually play here.

Harborside has me so spoiled!

So I'm a new golfer and I was persuaded by a friend to join a league at Harborside. My first rounds of golf ever was here and now no other local courses measure up! It is breathtakingly scenic, extremely well-maintained and delightfully challenging. Be ready to shake a LOT of sand out of your shoes at the end of the round! The staff who coordinates the league is absolutely fantastic. The league leaders are fun, helpful & accommodating and the caddies/cart/bag drop team are always pleasant and quick to help. The clubhouse is nice and the food here is always fresh and plenty of healthy options.
It is a little expensive to play 18 outside of the league play, but totally worth it. If it was closer to my home, I'd be looking to buy some kind of unlimited play pass for this course. I love it.

Quick 9, Pretty Course, Few Hazards, Be ready to wait for a cart

This is a cute 9-hole course that is fairly level, has only 1 water hazard and no sand, reasonable rough and is nice and lush. This course is pretty easily walked, even for those who may be used to riding in a cart. Not a lot of hills and holes aren't terribly long. We waited nearly 30 minutes past our tee time for carts and a few people waiting with us said it was a chronic issue here, but they gave us a coupon for our next visit for waiting. While the course wasn't anything life-changing and is low-frill, the ranger and cashier were pleasant, course was clean and pretty, pricing is really reasonable, access and parking is easy. Totally will be back.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are sorry about the long wait for the carts. We do realize the importance of out at the correct tee time and we are working on ways to improve this aspect of your experience. We are glad that this issue did not get in the way of your overall experience at Billy Caldwell Golf Course and we hope to see you back on the course soon!
