Shawneeki Golf Club
Played On 08/21/2023Good course but beware tournaments
Played here several times. Challenging for 20 handicappers but fair and fun. I only used my driver twice as course management is a crucial part of the game here. I also like not being penalized for a good shot by hidden bunkers or water.
Only drawback was being stuck behind a tournament of slow moving foursomes. Learned that when checking tee times if there’s no availability until 12:36 it’s because there is a tournament.
Enjoyable.

A nice course that’s challenging for the 15 handicap player and up. Mostly wide fairways and OB isn’t scary.
This round the tee boxes were so hard it was tough to sink a tee.
Handy range to warm up on.

Played On 06/15/2021Freight train hazard!
A reasonably well-maintained course with very friendly staff. The lay out can be confusing, especially when you cross a working freight train track going from the 2nd green to the 3rd tee box. And freight trains travel through the course at least 3 times during my round. Also, 15 and 16 are dangerously close to a housing development, (and not the kind that is designed to overlook a golf course.). Crowded, though pace of play was reasonably brisk.
Peninsula Lakes Golf Club - Hillside
Played On 09/15/2020Good challenge, good layout
27 hole course. Orchard is very pretty and playable. Hillside is tougher with some scary water holes. Bring plenty of ammunition as out of bounds is close and the water is armed. 5 tee boxes so all levels should be able to enjoy themselves.

Played On 05/21/2020Good COVId protocols
I like coming here for my first round of the year as it’s not too challenging. Nice wide fairways to help find my dormant swing.
With COVId I was pleased to see they have a good safety protocol in place including cart sterilization. Course itself is in very good shape.
Duntroon Highlands Golf Club
Played On 08/04/2019Gorgeous views, challenging elevations
I love this course and play twice a year. Gorgeous views of Georgian Bay from several elevated tees. Challenging but fair with a well cared for course. The back 9 is tougher with a difficult 10 dogleg through a forested area and a long par 5 15 with a blind tee shot. But it’s such a pretty course well worth the 2 hour drive from Toronto. Or better stay in Collingwood/Blue Mountain for a golf weekend.

Played On 08/04/2019Hidden gem
Lovely views of Georgian Bay and the escarpment make this a stunning hidden gem of a course. Busy on holiday weekends but good value. Conditions are consistent from good to excellent.
St. Andrew's Valley Golf Club
Played On 07/08/2019Difficult with a lot of punishments for good shots
Extreme rough just off narrow fairways means lots of lost balls. A lot of hidden water and marshes punishes you hitting a good shot blind. Pretty setting but frustrating for the high handicap player.
BraeBen Golf Course - 9-hole Academy
Played On 08/20/2018Good to practice short game
It took me an hour and 15 minutes to play the 9 short holes. Hilly terrain is the main obstacle to par. Good conditions but a confusing layout with multiple tee boxes so close together I got confused a couple of times. Can be crowded.
Guildford Golf and Country Club
Played On 08/13/2018Good layout in poor shape
I liked this course but it is in rough shape. Fairways are closer to first cut rough than mown fairways. Greens are pockmarked. But the layout is lovely and the holes are challenging but fair. But there is a lot of water to contend with. Course management comes into play here.
Spartan services. No starter or cart seller. No one takes your clubs. Not even a bag stand outside the pro shop. And don’t expect to grab a sandwich at the turn as 9 and 10 are nowhere near the club house.
I liked it but it’s closer to a municipal type course. Not crowded when I played which was nice.

Challenging but fair course with lots of elevation. Some very challenging holes but not impossible. Beautiful views of Georgian Bay from a couple of tees.
Turnberry Golf Club
Played On 07/16/2018It may be executive but it's a challenge
Links style course with little room for error. Only 1 and 18 are drivable, the rest are all par 3's, but that doesn't mean they're easy. Narrow landing areas lead to deep pot bunkers and adjacent fescue trap slightly errant balls. Many of the greens are elevated so if you don't land on the green at the right point, your ball will roll well off.
Can be played in 2 1/2 hours if no waiting.
