Bryanston Country Club
Played On 04/23/2017Bryanston - long yet fair
Major features to enjoy for me are the huge number of mature trees which line most fairways. I enjoy the sloping fairways which ensure a challenging approach shot. Greens can be tricky if playing for the first time. The course supports caddies and only has 25 carts so book early if you require one. A good challenge with good clubhouse food and service make this a high- quality destination.
Bryanston Country Club
Played On 04/23/2017Bryanston Country Club - long and fair
So Bryanston is my home course so expect a slight bias towards the course layout and amenities. I joined the club in 1986 as a junior and loved every minute of practice and playing with my mates until the sun stopped play. The only critizism back then was a general male only, family unfriendly and juniors can be seen but not heard colonial approach to members and visitors - the amount of times I had to pull up my mandatory long socks must equal Donald Trump's number of Tweets.
All that old thinking has gone and now families cavort happily on the clubhouse with pizza and sushi ready at the drop of a hat - expect good service, great atmosphere and a generally happy mood all around.
Golf course - long layout off the Men's tees give a premium on driving well, combine this with Slopes of notes on the greens and you have a great track with perfect kikuya grass fairways.
I would rank Bryanston in my Top 5 to play if you are in Johannesburg - a true benchmark of how a member's club should be managed.
Wanderers Golf Club
Played On 03/15/2017Wanderers
Wanderers Golf club resides right next to the Wanderers Cricket Club just south of Sandton. The perfect urban golf course with traditional values and layout.
Wanderers golf course has the best parkland layout with massive tree lined fairways with quick greens.
A well-positioned clubhouse and outside terrace is the place for sundowners after work.
Best tip is to avoid downhill putts!
Killarney Country Club
Played On 01/18/2017Killarney
Located near the busiest highway in Johannesburg makes Killarney easy and quick to find. The course parking is huge and you immediately feel a relaxed atmosphere as you walk towards the large practice green.
The large pro Shop staff are friendly but could do with a facelift. Onto the course, we started on the 10th hole which must rank as one of the toughest starting holes in South Africa! The course overall is actually short compared to modern design standards yet delivers an excellent challenge from a strategic and shot making requirements. The condition was amazing - a true gem under-rated here in South Africa.
Observatory Golf Club
Played On 12/02/2016Observatory - keep your eyes peeled for errant tee shots!
Observatory GC has got to be the tightest course in Johannesburg - long drivers beware! A tight short to medium layout awaits you in this tucked away golf course. Best tip would be to play 3 wood off the tee as I found myself sometimes 2 fairways off course with a wild hook!
The greens are in good condition but the clubhouse needs an overhaul.
Best hole design for me was the 7th Hole, a downhill Par 5 with water fronting a large green probably your best chance of a birdie after a decent drive.
The overall rating was downgraded as the round was very slow.
Houghton Golf Club
Played On 10/27/2016Houghton - Urban golfer Paradise
Houghton GC is nestled 10 minutes north of the Johannesburg City bowl. With its recent Jack Nicklaus redesign and clubhouse overhaul, you will be welcomed by a modern bar and an adequately sized Pro Shop. Houghton golf course is a tree-lined parklands course with good bunkering and challenging green complexes. Best hole on the course is the stroke 1 Par 4 Twelfth hole. Plenty of carts when we played.
