Lookout Mountain - Great Experience

First time playing this course after having wanted to play it for a while. Great time. Range balls are included in tee time and are readily available at the range. Pro shop/cart staff were very cool and welcoming.

Layout is tough but fair and challenges you to make good shots and club selections. Course conditions were excellent -- maybe only 2 "dead spots" on all fairways throughout course. Back 9 was more challenging to me overall than the front 9 -- overall, if you are a mid-tier player (think low 90s scoring on average), be prepared to lose some balls. No water in play until Hole 15, which has a lake on the left of the fairway (make a good choice off the tee w/ your club).

The holes I remember most are No. 9 (an extremely short Par 3 that only requires a wedge to hit the green but be wary if you come up short, as the hill is extremely steep and your ball will roll off) and No. 10 (an extremely elevated tee box that requires a skillful tee shot to get the fairway).

All in all, highly recommend. Just as a note to first time players, the pro shop is at the entrance to the Pointe Hilton hotel that the course is a part of, not the entrance that Apple/Google Maps takes you to.

BrettMurdock,
Thank you for taking the time to review Lookout Mountain Golf Club! We appreciate your candid review about the golf course and it's layout. While not long, by today's standards, the course does challenge you throughout the round, especially holes 7-14. We are happy you found the course to be in excellent shape and we look forward to seeing you again!

Palo Verde -- Muni Round

First things first, this is a city municipal course, so don't be expecting Troon-like quality or private course amenities/conditions. You get what you pay for.

Having said that, was a nice time at this 9 hole muni. Easily walkable, though carts are available but the push courts allow for an easier time to walk this short course. Of the 9 holes, 6 are Par 3s, so good time to test your short game.

The conditions were what you expect in the fairways and for early in the morning when I teed off (sprinklers still going, wet spots, mud in some spots, etc). Just know you are playing around $12 to $15 for a city course and don't expect anything else. However, I was really impressed by the condition the greens were in -- if there's a good thing to say about this course, it's that the greens are better than a lot of other/better courses I've played throughout the years.

Great Desert Course

Played this for the first time ever thanks to a generous gift from a friend. First off, it is a first-rate facility - the staff was courteous, knowledgeable, hard working, and very welcoming. They provide you with course books diagramming every hole and the yardage, along with a few complimentary items such as tees, cups, towels, etc.

There are two courses at Whirlwind - The Devil's Claw and Cattail - and we played The Devil's Claw. It is a very pristine and well-maintained desert course. The fairways were crisp and had some punch to it, allowing your ball to get a few extra yards off the bounce. However, it is much better to be accurate rather than powerful because if you mishit your shot, it's going to get lost in the desert shrubbery that lines every hole. The bunkers are also deep and taken care of and there are plenty of them along the way, making your shot and club selection ever so critical.

The only bad thing I would say is that a few of the greens were lacking a bit of maintenance especially on the outside of them. Other than that, the course was in fantastic shape. A true desert golfing experience.

Would definitely recommend this course to friends and family.
