Robert Trent Jones gem

One of my favorite courses in Columbus. A few odd holes but for the most part an interesting fun layout with lots of personality. Some of the bunkers have been sanded this year and others are basically mud and dirt. I’m sure they can only do some many each year since it’s a city course on a strict budget.

Greens Had just been aerated so putting was worthless, but it’s that time of year. It also was still wet from the 4 inches of rain we got a number of days prior and it was cart path only without any notice. There was no notice of the aeration either. Irritating and unprofessional to not give notice.

I have bad knees and a bad hip and I would NEVER book a round knowing a course was cart path only. Probably would have been just as easy to try and walk.

I like the course very much but I will say you should always call before booking if there has been any recent rain. It holds water like no course I’ve ever seen and it is cart path only A LOT.

Always pleasant out in farm country

Nice course out in the country. Not real long. Not real fancy, but generally in good shape with very nice, very small, very quick, and very challenging greens for a modest inexpensive country course.

If you aren’t accurate with your approach shots your chipping and pitching better be sharp or you won’t score worth a darn.

Great conditions

Very lush and best conditions I’ve ever seen here. Greens were nearly perfect and bordering on scary fast. They are rolling them now and you could definitely tell. Do NOT short side yourself or get above the hole. The course looks like a pushover on the scorecard but the small fast heavily sloped greens are her defense.

I Always enjoy the meadows

Very straightforward course. Not very difficult for the better golfer, but that is just fine now and then. Most holes are pretty forgiving off the tee. If you are having driver issues you will likely love it here. Staff is great. Always very friendly.

Greens are usually excellent and pretty darn quick for a modest country course. Bunkers could be better, but that goes for just about every public course anymore. They are just so expensive to maintain.

Cost is quite reasonable. Clubhouse is very modest but it serves its purpose. Dogs, brats, sandwiches, beers, sodas and snacks. Some balls and gloves and a tv and a dozen or so tables.

Carts are hysterically bad. Just accept it. For the price paid you can’t have everything.

I Wish there were more places like this out there that could manage to stay in business.

Always a pleasure

One of the best course layouts in central Ohio.

On my personal top 5 public course list within 50 miles of Columbus.

Greens fairways and teeboxes are looking good. Many bunkers are a bit thin, but I understand that they are a huge expense and improvements can only be made so quickly on a tight budget. Some crabgrass issues really need to be dealt with in quite a few spots in the rough, but the overall improvements in the year and a half since the change in ownership has been quite impressive.

Keep it up guys. Nice work.

Always a pleasure.....unless it's windy.

It's in nice shape. Good test of golf. Bunkers could use a little sand but most public courses are struggling with that.
Greens were rolling nice. Good shape.
They were resurfacing the paths with new Asphault whilst I was there.

I always enjoy it unless it's windy, which is frequently. Quite a few of the holes are pretty exposed if it blows. I always check the weather before booking.

A pleasant drive in the country

Not very difficult, not very long, but it's a pleasant course out in the country that ususally has pretty nice conditions and very good greens and is priced very reasonably. I played here 5 or 6 times last season. The carts are crummy, but I don't go for the carts.

Obviously now, in late February things aren't great yet, but the greens have been cut and rolled and they really were quite nice. Pleasantly surprised.

45 degrees and breezy. It was literally me and three other singles on the entire course. Played two balls from various locations for some good practice. It Was a good afternoon but I was quite ready for the heater in the car by 5:30.

Lots of work going on.

Course is still a bit rough after years of neglect. Jim cook and his team own it again and are working hard for next year.

Fairways have just been aerated and there are plugs everywhere. Greens were aerated a couple weeks ago and are still bumpy. Crabgrass has been sprayed and is dead all over the course. However....these aren't really complaints. I'm happy to tolerate crummy conditions now for the long term good of the course.

Do not expect good conditions at the moment. It is fall and It is still quite playable, but they are using this time to do a lot of work. Still a wonderful layout. One of the best around. I'm looking forward to next year now that some money and care are going into the course.

Oh yeah. Quite a few brand new electric golf carts is a big plus. I don't know if they did the whole fleet or not, but the 10 or so in front of the clubhouse when I was there were brand new. They even have that "new cart smell".

Keep it up guys!

Beautiful fall colors

This course has lot of "personality" as I like to say. This was the first time I played it. Unfortunately it is a 50 minute drive from my house in west Columbus. Just far enough to make it inconvenient. It is well designed and quite interesting. A good flow from hole to hole. About half of the holes are tree lined and half are out in the open. Calling it a links really makes no sense, but that's fine with me because I'm no fan of links style courses.

The course is challenging, without being punishing or unfair. It is relatively straight forward. There are certainly holes you would learn to play better with repetition or by playing with a regular. "Never go here, always miss on the left when the pin is there, never go long with that pin position," etc.,etc. I made a few significant logistical mistakes and only realized it after approaching the green.

Unfortunately the greens had just been aerated and were furry, so putting was nearly pointless. They look like they normally could be quite nice. I also ran into serious traffic on 12 and came to a standstill. I was playing as a single and had Multiple slow playing foursomes pile up in front. I went into the pro shop which happened to be next to the 12th tee and the gentleman working the shop was kind enough to let me go back and play a few holes on the empty front 9 to give the log jam time to clear out. After 5 holes on the front, I went back to 10 and started the back nine over again. Flew through in an hour and a half. I'm sure that considerate gesture totally changed how I viewed the round and how I played. Shot one under on the back with one lip out and 2 putts dead on line but short.... furry greens ; )

The bunkers weren't the best, but bunkers are expensive to maintain and top off every year. The budget isn't there for most courses anymore, especially the affordable ones out in the country.. They were letting some go to natural waste areas and seeding some of them. Understandable. The fairways were also patchy in spots. Bare dirt in places. Had to give the ball a nudge now and then to get it on some grass. They obviously have a grub issue like so many other course in central Ohio. The grubs kill the grass they are under and the animals dig up the grubs and eat them. Too bad. Insecticide is expensive.

All in all, I'd say to not expect a highly manicured course in perfect condition. It just isn't. Part of that is the time of the year and part of it grubs and part of it is the budget. But it Is very affordable. It is fun. It is an interesting layout. It is moderately challenging and makes you play a variety of shots. It is in a very beautiful rolling hill area out east of Columbus. I will absolutely be back to play it again. If it were closer to town it would definitely be in my regular rotation.

Nice course but a bit hilly for me.

I enjoyed the course for the most part, however a motorcycle injury that shattered my pelvis makes hilly lies very difficult for me. The front nine is fairly hilly so it wasn't exactly my cup of tea. Don't go long on approach shots on the front!! Green complexes will not let you get away with it. Had distance control issues on the front. Flew the green 4 times and failed to get up and down 4 times. Lipped out twice, but still, 4 bogies. A 245 yard par 3 on a public daily fee course is probably not a great idea in my opinion. Number 8. Maybe at the us open, but I personally think it's a bit much on a course like this.

That said, the back 9 isn't quite as hilly. It's shorter and easier as well. Lots of old growth trees. Very pretty. It also has One of the nicer par 5's you'll ever play.

I'd play the course again if it were closer to Columbus. It is interesting and scenic. Fairly difficult. Nice condition for the end of summer. Nice staff. It's just too far and a bit too hilly for me to play on a regular basis. 55 minutes from the west side of Columbus is too far for me unless I were in love with the place. If it were 20 minutes closer to the city it would be busy all the time.

Pleasant surprise

Really interesting course with lots of character. Don't let the yardage on the card fool you. It plays much longer than 6300+ yards from the back. A few of the holes are about placement so the shorter length on a few par 4's and one of the shorter par 5's make it actually play more like 7000 yards. Greens were in excellent shape. Quite fast with lots of slope. A couple might be bordering on too sloped. One gripe on design. 16 from the back tees at 484 is far too hard for a public daily fee course and will definitely slow down play in general. A Slight dog right, extremely narrow with giant trees down both sides, and a small intensely sloped green make it too tough for its own good. Apparently it used to be a short par 5, but I think it's totally unreasonable as a 4. The Presidential course started as 9 holes. You can definitely tell. I prefer the front 9 plus hole 10. 11-18 are interesting, but can get a little claustrophobic if your driver isn't sharp. Overall a really nice experience. Staff was very friendly as well.

I wish it were closer

I'd play it quite often if it weren't so far from Columbus. Nice layout. Great price. Always able to get on. Long enough to make you hit a variety of clubs if you are a longer hitter.
Some of the greens were Not in the best condition. A bit thin and patchy in places. Running pretty slow in general. One green has a bad burn from leaking hydraulic fluid from a mower. The fairways were a little on the furry side. Made the course play longer. I imagine they have had to be careful with not cutting too short since its been so dry this year.
The bunkers aren't the greatest either. Don't drain real well and are a very heavy coarse consistency. Most were playable but you need a 60 degree low bounce lob wedge for most shots out of them.
On the whole it isn't the most manicured course, but I still find it pleasant and a good value.

Better hit it straight off the tee. (Old course)

This is golf course you can score on if you stay out of trouble off the tee. The greens are large and most are not terribly difficult. It's an older more traditional course. Not at all flashy or tricky. The course was in excellent shape, despite being a bit dry for a couple weeks. The bunkers are a bit suspect. Very firm. Not enough to sand in most of them. It's not terribly long from the tips, but it is very tight on a number of holes. I Managed to pull three drives dead left (my "normal" miss when my timing is a little off), into farmers fields. Twice on the front and one time on the back. Double, double, single bogey. 5 strokes in 3 holes. Ouch. Fortunately managed 4 birdies and an eagle to more than make up for it, but the claustrophobic fairways will definitely take their toll if you are not on your game. Everyone seems to want to play the more modern "players course", which is a nice course and a good test as well, but I must say, I found the old course quite enjoyable and a good test of skill. It was my first time on it and I will surely play it again this summer.

Solid test

Second time I've played here. Last time was 8 years ago. I'm not sure why I haven't been back before now. Very nice layout and quite challenging. The greens and fairways were in excellent shape. Both are bent grass. Yes, the cart paths and bunkers are a disaster. Oh well. financial constraints are always an issue with rural daily fee courses. Many of the bunkers are essentially unplayable and should be considered ground under repair. The ones that are playable require a low bounce small flange 60, 62, or 64 degree lob wedge. Very hard under the small layer of sand. One of the employees said they are probably going to let some of them go to grass. If you know about the paths and the bunkers before the round you should have no other complaints,....well....except maybe for a few of the greens. Some are far too contoured and too difficult for a public course. If you played here regularly you would learn them and learn were NOT to miss on your approach shots. Where to never be long, never be left or right if the pin is in this or that position, etc., etc. Some are just too difficult for their own good and really slow down play. On the whole however, I did enjoy the course and I will return this summer for sure.

First visit of the season. Looking good.

Happy that they are open again. One of my favorite courses in the Columbus area. Greens are already in pretty nice shape just coming out of the winter. Not as quick as they will be in summer, but rolling nicely already.

Good test of golf. Nice variety of holes. Elevation changes. Mature Trees. Creek. A couple Lakes. Not very long, but the layout still provides a good challenge if you are a longer hitter. Definitely a course you will learn to play better after a few visits. Some subtleties that you can't know of the first time around. Good to play with a regular if you can. Get some tips. Add a club here. Never go long right here. Iron off the tee here no matter how much you think it's driver. Nice place. Nice staff. 5 stars. Excellent value.

Challenging with Two distinct 9's.

Not a house in site. Out in the farmland. Front nine sort of "links" like. Back nine more traditional "american" golf. I personally preferred the back with large trees and rolling hills. Im not a big fan of the links style course, with only bushes and smallish trees. Nothing to "frame" the fairways and the greens sort of bothers me.That said, its still a very nice course, just not the "perfect" course for me. Nice variety of holes and varying lengths. The greens roll very nicely and are among the fastest I have played all summer. Quite a lot of undulation. Very challenging, to the point of being a bit frustrating after playing a lot of public golf this summer with boring slow greens. Absolutely show up early and spend some time putting on the practice green if you wish to score well. The front nine is very exposed and I'm told its usually windy so Id practice the knock downs and punch shots before your round. It was only modestly breezy the day i played so the wind wasn't a big factor. Just a club up or down depending on direction, but I could see it playing very tough if it got much above 15-20 mph. If your short game is on you can score here. Not terribly long and somewhat generous fairways, but the rough is definitely just long enough to be a half shot penalty. A very good test of golf, especially on and around the greens. I will play it again despite not loving the front nine. Its a quality place.

Nice course. Very pleasant day.

Not difficult, but not a pushover. Doesn't make you work too hard or think too much if you're hitting it well. Can get in some trouble if you aren't straight off the tee, but it isn't super tight. Greens had recently been aireated so that made the putting difficult to take seriously, seemed like the greens otherwise would have been pretty nice. If you are longer it will be a lot of wedges to the green on the 4's. A few places a long iron or hybrid off the tee is the right play. I'll go back in a couple weeks when the greens have healed.

Simple but pleasant

A farmer turned his field turned into a golf course in the early 70's. Yes, I asked the starter...
The trees are mature enough to cause problems if you aren't accurate off the tee. The greens are small with little undulation. Unfortunately they had just been aerated a couple days before my visit. Ill go back in a couple weeks and give it another go. If you are a longer hitter and really want to practice different clubs, you should deliberately take less than driver off most of the par 4s or you will be hitting a lot of sub 100 yard approaches.

Overall, its an easy short course with few water hazards and flat small greens. Your chipping and pitching will be tested if your approaches aren't accurate. That said, its's in nice shape for as dry as it has been the last couple of weeks. Its out in the country with no houses around it. It was pleasant and relaxed. Not too testing if you are a better golfer, but sometimes thats really not a bad thing. It would be a great place to take a friend or family member who is new to the game or not very long off the tee. I will definitely visit again.

Confused by the good reviews

I know experience varies a lot based on time of year and luck, but this course is very average to mediocre in all respects. Greens were ball marked up the worst of any course I've played this year (8 courses so far). Very sad. Parts of the course were burnt out despite a vey wet season. Ponds were stagnant and breeding Mosquitos. All Desperately in need of a fountain, pump, or other airation device.
The most irritating aspect was pace of play. I was paired with 3 gentlemen and the first nine, (back nine) went smoothly. We waited breifly on the par threes. Common. The second nine however got strangely slow. First two holes not bad, then slowed to a crawl. Waiting significantly on every shot. To the point of getting out the phone and checking email and sending texts, and practicing pitch shots in the rough. They must have slid some people out a couple groups in front of us to have this dramatic a slow down. Too far for me to drive, too irritating a day, and too expensive for me to go back. A one time play unless someone I know wants to play it.

Hit it straight

Mature tree lined fairways got me a few times. Better hit it straight. Greens are challenging and fast with lots of undulation. Don't be long,....ever. Nearly Impossible to get up and down from some spots. Most bunkers in good shape. Really nothing negative to say about the course. One of the better courses for the money on Golfnow i believe. Even though it isn't real long, the Course is no pushover. Need to bring your A game. Accuracy and smart play is a premium over length.

Members that have played many times and know the greens like the back of their hand were pushing our group. Only 3 of us, but we never played the course and had no local knowledge. I never understand why some golfers think its a race to get done as fast as possible. Makes me uncomfortable.

Small quibble really. Im sure the members don't really like the Golfnow'ers using their facility.
I'd definitely go back. Should be more enjoyable the second time around having a bit of course knowledge under my belt.
