This course should be easy, but it isn't

A neat old layout, with majestic 100-foot tall trees throughout. If it's well-manicured that you're looking for, go to the other course in Albany.

If it's a fun, challenging old-school golf experience, this one might be for you. Despite playing short (around 6,000 yards), tight fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and some big trees in just the wrong places make you have to work.

I've played this course a few times and have not scored nearly as well as I'd expect given the length. The driver stays in my bag on most holes as the ideal landing zones are usually 200-240 yards out. Lots of hybrids off the tees. Greens are small, sloped, and not always in the best shape.

There are a couple holes on the back nine which are sharp dogleg right, and require 220-ish off the tee to make the corner. No problem for me but tough on older folks who don't hit it as far.

Overall, it's an interesting enough layout to keep me coming back. It's also very walkable and hasn't been busy at all this spring/summer, unlike many other courses.

Great course for the money

Played Chehalem for the first time with three friends. Staff was friendly. Price was certainly right - booked through the course website and got a steal of a deal (less than most muni 9-hole rates) on a midweek early afternoon tee time.

I'd heard that the course was very challenging. I found it to be only moderately so from the middle tees. In fact, I shot a personal best round for the year (thanks to lots of up and down conversions). Greens were medium-fast and not too hard to read. Most holes had a clearly defined "good miss" area on both the tee shot and the approach.

I didn't love the layout, especially the first several holes of the back nine which seemed a bit monotonous. Several forced carries (albeit short) were a little unfair for the two older members of our group playing from the red tees.

Overall, I'd play here again, especially for the price.

Not bad for a local course

Laurelwood is a decent little local course for the money.

Good:
The greens are small, sloped, and tricky, and make you work.
Fairways are surprisingly open (I hit driver on most holes here, except for #5 and #9).
Three par 3s are fun holes.
Relatively cheap.

Bad:
A couple years ago, they rerouted the finishing holes and the new #9 is an unfair par 5 with a forced short drive and blind uphill second shot.
The course doesn't drain very well.
Lots of new golfers playing here means slow, slow, slow rounds (especially this spring with COVID).
For whatever reason, they limit late tee times. It gets dark at 9:00 in the summer; I can play 9 holes in an hour when walking...but they often won't let anyone on the course after 6:00 or 6:30, and that seems to be by the whim of the person manning the pro shop on any given day.

Uninspiring layout in good shape

Though the course was in good shape, I left without any recollection whatsoever of the majority of holes. Most were bland, straight, narrow, and short-ish, with minimal hazards. A nice enough walk in the park, but not a course that will make you think.

In contrast, the course just down the road (The Golf Club of Oregon) has several holes where you have to make decisions off the tee and/or work the ball to get positioned for the next shot. It's not as well-kept, but I'd argue it's a more fun course.

A throwback

Pineway is an older course and it feels that way, with tall trees and small greens. Nothing special here in terms of layout, but it's a nice place to play a relaxed nine. Course is not what I'd call manicured...greens are slow and sandy, fairways shaggy, and hard to tell where they stop and rough begins. But it's cheap, staff is friendly, and isn't very busy.

Crowded

I've played this course several times in the last couple years. This spring, I've tried to play it three times and only got on once. The other two times, they were so beyond backed up and/or were trying to pair unrelated households, that I asked for a refund on prepaid times and went elsewhere. Staff was stressed and somewhat rude about the whole thing.

It's a nice course, well-kept with a fun layout, but they could do a lot better on managing their own workloads. If you are complaining that you can't get people off the tee in an orderly fashion, it's your fault, not your customers.
