Cecil Field Golf Club
Played On 01/15/2024A big NO!
Having played this course countless times and seen it in various playing conditions, I have to say it's the worst I've ever seen it. Lumpy inconsistent greens, barely mowed fairways and dilapidated golf carts that can't even make it 18 holes. We need courses like Cecil for seniors, youngsters and beginners to play, but people also deserve to get some value for their money. Currently, that isn't happening here. So sad.
North Shore Golf Course
Played On 02/05/2022Nice course but …
I would like to make this review about the course itself — greens are decent, layout is challenging, nice amenities. But I can’t get past the cost for a round at this course; even by Orlando price standards it seemed too high. Other area golf courses offer similar or better conditions at a better value.
Brooksville Country Club
Played On 03/18/2021Nice course but ...
There are several nice aspects to the course, such as the layout, rolling hills providing and of course the quarry holes. But while the fairways are decent and the greens generally good, the price to play seems a bit high for an older course with limited amenities. Pace of play on a midday afternoon was pretty slow too. Would I play it again? Maybe. But I would recommend this course to someone who had never played there before.
Eighteen Hole at Holiday Island Country Club
Played On 07/28/2021Lots of positives
Saw this course while heading to Eureka Springs for the day and decided to play it. Overall the course is a well-maintained, challenging track with small, firm greens that provide a good test once you get on the putting surface. Pace of play for a mid-week round was excellent and the staff was friendly. But I have to admit the thing I will remember most about this course isn’t on the course at all …it’s the driving range! Whoever built this unique range is either a genius or totally mad! Just getting to the hitting area requires nerves of steel going down a narrow path (only partially paved) while listening to the golf cart brakes squeal the whole time. Once you’re there though I have to admit it was a hoot hitting short iron shots with 8 second hang times before seeing the ball drop into a creek and stratified mountainside far below. And going up the path? Well you can imagine what it was like but we made it. One other thing about the course, my female playing partner was a little upset the ladies’ tees were just struck randomly in the fairway, we’re uneven and were not mowed. Also the course has no bathrooms on either nine, so definitely stop at the clubhouse on the turn!
Valencia Golf & Country Club
Played On 10/26/2020Overall nice course
Valencia was a good course to start off an extended golf stay in Naples. Wonderfully wide fairways, well maintained greens and adequate amenities was a real confidence booster. Friendly staff and cart girl (even on a Monday).
Cypress Knoll Golf & Country Club
Played On 03/28/2020Always enjoyable
Cypress Knoll would seem like so many bland, forgettable Florida golf courses shoehorned into a subdivision. But this course has so much to offer. It plays sneaky long, with tee.boxes that force well placed, solid tee shots to even give yourself a chance at birdie or par. The short par 4s are particularly fun to play. Overall, greens are in very good condition in late March, some showing virtually no ball marks due to limited play during the pandemic. Pace of play was excellent, cost-to-quality ratio was outstanding and the staff was super friendly. If I had to find one nit to pick it would be the rough cart paths and small signage for the first time players. My female playing partner also noted a significant lack of grass on the ladies tees compared to other tee boxes. Overall, though, Cypress Knoll, is worth checking out!
Magnolia Point Golf & Country Club
Played On 02/12/2019Getting Good!
Course conditions are getting very nice, particularly the greens. Recent rains left some soggy spots, but nothing terrible. Pace of play= is my biggest sticking point at Magnolia Point, mainly because foursomes of older members can at times be slow. But if you go there knowing that face in advance it's less frustrating. Just enjoy the day and a wonderful, challenging layout.
Country Club of Orange Park
Played On 02/05/2019Poor conditions
Course was saturated and muddy the day I played. Greens are in poor condition and getting worse. Hoping they find a new owner soon!
Jacksonville Beach Golf Club
Played On 12/18/2018Course looks great!
Kudos to Jacksonville Beach residents for investing in the municipal golf course and making what are so many very positive changes. I recently played the course for the first time after the renovations and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Top of the list is of course the greens and all I can say is Wow! Also, while some holes have been shortened, the revised holes still pose a challenge and require some strategy. I will strongly recommend this course to fellow golfers.
Country Club of Orange Park
Played On 10/12/2018Disappointing experience
The Country Club of Orange Park is a championship golf course of tremendous potential and for many years it has lived up to that potential. But in the past year the course’s overall quality has noticeably declined. During my most recent round I found a majority of greens had large patches of dead grass, many fairways are going unmowed, bunkers are hard pan and unraked and tee boxes have become uneven and in a couple of cases overrun with mole tunnels. Members and owners — both present and future— need to take responsibility and address these issues before this once terrific course gets even worse.
Laurel Island Links
Played On 06/28/2018Good experience
It had been a couple of years since I played Laurel Island but it won't be that long next time. The course is in very good shape, with greens looking healthy and rolling nicely, and fairways that very lush. it was a bit wet when we played, but hey, it's Southern Georgia in the summer time. It rains! Our mid-week round was done within three hours due to few other golfers and that included a pit stop/quick lunch at the turn. Playing from the white tees offered a relaxing and positive round; from the tips, Laurel Island can be a beast unless you are long-hitting course designer Davis Love III. Overall, a very positive golf experience.
Eagle Harbor Golf Club
Played On 08/24/2017Good quality/value course
Playing Eagle Harbor several times over the past 15 years, I was never sure what kind of quality the course would be in when I arrived. This most recent visit I was very happy to see a course in excellent condition, particularly the fairways and tee boxes.Greens at Eagle Harbor have never been sub-par but I haven't seen them this GOOD in quite some time. They're not high on the Stimphmeter, yet they give a consistent roll on each that is fair to players. The fairways are particularly nice right now. The GPS system in the carts is a nice touch, too, although it takes some getting used to when the cart "dings" and then stops rolling if you nudge a bit too close to the green. One time and you don't do that again! Check out Eagle Harbor, it may be a few bucks more than other nearby courses but you'll forget that when you walk on the course.
Lakes Golf Course at Laura Walker State Park
Played On 02/22/2015Worth the drive
This golf course is about 70 miles from my home with many golf courses in between. But it's worth the drive in the spring or fall (avoid the summer bugs) because the setting is so pretty and the course itself is always in good shape and is challenging. The greens also have some undulation and are challenging. My wife and I walked the 6,600 yard course in under 4 hours and walking is welcomed.Take a lunch to eat at the park as a way to enjoy the day.
Julington Creek Golf Club
Played On 11/21/2014Looking good!
The course is in very good condition; greens and fairways are particularly nice. The pace of play, which can be slow on certain days, was excellent on the Friday morning I played. Big thumbs up all around.
Dubsdread Golf Course
Played On 10/18/2014Lovely old course
This was my first visit to Dubsdread and boy what a great first impression. Overall the course layout and cost to value make this course worth playing again and again, even if it is in the shadow of I-4. It's not perfect, especially with the pace of play being very slow on a beautiful October weekend. The greens, while challenging, also are a bit pockmarked from the high number of round played there. But if you love golf like the two Dubsdread members I played with do, they and all Dubsdread regulars accept the course for all its wonderful blemishes. I'll definitely be back. Thanks Mark and Carol!
West Orange Country Club
Played On 10/17/2014Don't play here unless...!
There's nothing visually exciting about West Orange CC when the first-time visitor like myself first arrives. Any golfer who has played Florida courses will recognize this layout with its generally straight fairways, limited bunkers and wide welcoming fairways lined by pine trees. BUT ... then you get to the greens, those magnificent Tif Eagle greens that are lightning fast and nearly pristine due to the limited play the private course gets. Don't play this course if you don't want to be challenged by greens that must be running 13 on the stimpmeter. There is some water and the par 3s from the tips are challenging ... and then you have to putt. Take the time to check out this course, just leave plenty of time for traffic in Windemere and some time on the practice greens!
Jacksonville Beach Golf Club
Played On 07/06/2014Location, location, location
I might be tougher on Jacksonville Beach for mediocre greens if the latest round there wasn't such a nice day. On the positive side, the layout of the course is very nice and with the many water hazards, while not friendly to those who can't control distance, offers unique challenges to those who can. Changes made to the back nine of the course are also really looking good, particularly No. 16 and the reworked tee box on No. 18. On the downside, many of the greens are still struggling, which is a shame because they offer some of the best undulation for a Florida muni. The guys at Jax Beach are working hard to make the course the best it can be, so it's for that reason and the nice weather that I bump them to a four stars.
Golf Club At Fleming Island
Played On 07/01/2014Good, getting better
This course has always been a nice place to play but it's gotten even better after a recent ownership change. The greens are in very good condition, pace of play was excellent for a weekday round and the subtle changes to the course (new tee markers, landscaping, etc.) are really adding to the course quality. You can't go wrong with Fleming Island when it comes with quality and value.
Cecil Field Golf Club
Played On 06/23/2014Fiddlers is struggling again
Let me say from the start that the business of running a public golf course has got to be challenging, from overhead to weather conditions to hateful customers there's probably no shortage of pains. However, Fiddler's Green is open to the public and as such should have some basic amenities, not the least of which is water coolers on the course. At one time they had them and they also cut the rough, maintained the greens and made an attempt to provide a decent tee box. Unfortunately the course is sliding back into its previous condition, which was extremely poor especially in the summer time. One positive thing is the course's fees are low and that gives beginners and seniors a place to play without costing a fortune.
Cimarrone Golf Club
Played On 04/06/2014Always a challenge
It's good to see Cimmarone coming along so well after its recent sale. The greens, while not perfect, are still in much better shape than in years past and the course conditions are good overall. This course is one of the more challenging in the Jacksonville area for one reason -- water! You have to know your distances and be willing to take a 3-wood or hybrid off the tee in some places if you want to score well. On ther other hand, be ready to hammer the driver on some holes if you want any chance of making par. Keep up the good work, Cimmarrone!
