The Club at Eaglebrooke
Played On 01/24/2024Great layout and fun course
Played with 2 members and a gentleman who play there often. Weather was 78 and sunny. Light breeze. Conditions were very good. Greens were very puttable. Staff wipes off clubs when done. Will be returning when back in the Tampa area. Willing to drive the 1 hour to play there.
The Club at Eaglebrooke
Played On 01/24/2024Great fun layout
Drove from Tampa to play there for the first time with people from the membership there. Warm, sunny and 10 MPH breeze. Perfect 80 degrees. Course conditions were fantastic. Greens were not overly fast but smooth. If you are in the area, please play the Club at Eaglebrooke. Rates are very reasonable.
Windmill Lakes Golf Club
Played On 07/14/2022Great layout
My wife and I played and we have decided driving the 2 hours to play there is well worth it. The course has been a favorite of mine for many years. It is a great layout with great conditions. Greens are always running smooth and a little on the faster side. The other great thing about Windmill Lakes is their selection of clubs and shoes as it always has been the largest selection of professional golf equipment. Give it a try. You will not be disappointed!
Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation
Played On 10/19/2020Beautiful day, nice track!
70 degrees and sunny with no wind. Started playing with 2 gentleman as a single. Great company. Course layout was pretty darn good. However, after seeing the first 4 greens, I thought there might be a problem. There were a lot of spots on the greens that were molded in some places, but after seeing where they were, I think they didn't get enough sunlight. Good variety of holes. Green speed overall was pretty consistent. Fairways and tees were were very playable. Number 9 is a great golf hole and very challenging. I recommend anyone in the area to play this enjoyable course.
Tanglewood Golf Club - Championship Course
Played On 10/17/2020Spectacular!
Played with my wife and son. It was his birthday so I decided to drive the 90 minutes from Charlotte since it was their birthday present from me. I was surprised at the great layout and conditions the course was in. Variety of holes, fast and true greens, and great sand traps. I really appreciate the value this course provided and will play it again when I go to the Charlotte area again. Please play this iconic golf course since it has golf history attached to it by the way of the PGA Championship. This by the way is the most fun I have had playing a golf course recently.
The Club at Ironwood
Played On 10/13/2020Stinks!
Driving through Staunton, VA on our way to Charlotte, NC, I asked my wife if she would like to play this course since I saw on I-81 on our way to the hotel. Called before going and the lady indicated if you play quick, we would be delighted to play late in the afternoon. After getting there, we were surprised by how pour the conditions were. Tees were very rough, fairways were not cut at all, greens were in just OK shape. They were slow. Can't figure out why they were in such horrible condition. Was told by a member that they do not have a superintendent. But that is no excuse for such horrible conditions. Fairways were extremely high. Par 5 in front had water on the right side of the fairway which leads me to believe there was bad drainage. Now I also am trying to figure out why the signs on the holes say "Country Club of Staunton". Paying $26.00 for 9 holes is outrageous. The least they could have done was alert us to the bad conditions. I don't think the lady in the clubhouse knew enough about golf to understand that conditions sometimes will bring golfers back to their course. I would not recommend anyone playing this course until they explain all of the problems they are going through. Bad! Bad! Bad!
Heron Creek Golf and Country Club - Oaks/Marsh Course
Played On 01/23/2020Excellent overall experience!
Played with three great people I met there at the course. 71 and sunny. Virtually no wind. Course layout was great, although a little wide open. Tees and fairways were in great shape. But the greens were the star at about 10.5 on stimp. Virtually no grain to read. They were perfect putting surfaces. Just to let you know all 3 nines were different so it made it a very enjoyable experience. Great club house. Happy hour from 3-6 was great with all drinks half price of top shelf drinks. Had plans for dinner at another restaurant or we would have stayed for dinner. Please give it a try if in the Port Charlotte and North Port area.
Hi birdieman601. We appreciate you leaving a review and rating us. We will inform the entire team, so they know their hard work is paying off. We look forward to having you back at Heron Creek Golf and Country Club - Oaks/Marsh Course!
Springfield Golf Club
Played On 06/06/2019Great First Impression
First course played in Charlotte area since moving from Western PA 06/01/2019. My son and I went upon a recommendation of a friend in the area and it was a great choice. The staff in the pro shop and outside were as nice as you would want. Course layout reminded us of the hills and trees in Pennsylvania, so we were right at home. Tees were a little thin and sandy, but we overlooked that since they were recently punched, This was for the good of the year to come. Great variety of holes. Greens were very well manicured with a little, but not overbearing, speed. Bunkers were very well placed, even though some washed out due to recent rain. That can be overlooked. But this course is definitely a keeper. What more do you want, length, strategy, great conditions for a public golf course, great rate to play. My son has indicated this will probably be his go to place to play, since he played college golf.
Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
Played On 01/18/2019Great course after 45 years!
Played with my son and a couple for Montreal, Canada on a perfect day. 78 degrees, sunny, light winds. I played here back in 1974 while stationed at MacDill AFB, Tampa Florida. Things have definitely changed for the better here at El Campeon. Layout is challenging. Tees, greens, and fairways were in great conditions. What I did not realize is how difficult the greens can be due to slope and grain. They were very fast, so you had to be very careful with downhill down grain putts. Staff was first rate. I will definitely be back if in the Tampa or Orlando area.
Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club
Played On 01/17/2019Best public course in Florida
Me and my son played Pine Barrens, second time for me, first time for my son. 72 degrees. Sunny. Light winds. PERFECT! It had been 20 years since I played there. I knew it was great, but it is hard to describe to someone who has never played Pine Barrens before. Immaculate! Overseeding was in full bloom. Greens were about 10.5 on stimp. Pace of play was great having played in 4 hours and thirty minutes. Dave and Bill at the front counter and the starter and ranger staff were some of the best I have ever been greeted by. Please play here if you are in the Tampa Bay area since it is only about 55 minutes up the Suncoast Expressway from Tampa International Airport. The ladies in the snack bar were kind, considerate, and friendly. I will be back when in the Tampa area.
Rolling Oaks at World Woods Golf Club
Played On 01/16/2019Great layout!!
Played with son on a cool Florida day. Second time for me and first for my son. This layout is very good. Tees and greens were good. Fairways were not as nice as they could be since the overseed did not take effect yet. But that did not take away a great day of golf at one of Florida's top 3 public golf complexs. Would definitely be back. Great value with email specials. Bill and Dave and all of the starter and ranger staff should be commended for their hard work and giving us a great time. Have referred many golfers to World Woods in the past and will continue to refer them in the future when they come to the Tampa Bay area. Thanks again.
Oglebay Resort - Par-3 Course
Played On 07/29/2018Fairways dispicable!
Played with my son and 2 other gentlemen today after driving 1 1/4 hours. Last time I played was 25 years ago. Layout is pretty nice and challenging. However fairways were burned out. Couldn't believe my eyes! When inquired about the burned out fairways, started and ranger indicated local municipality did not allow them to use city water to water the fairways. Probably because the bill was not paid. So for 9 days in all of the heat the area was under, the fairways suffered. Greens were OK. Not the fastest, but OK. Went to clubhouse and voiced displeasure. The lady behind the counter was very nice to talk to and she asked if I would return this year. I stated not until conditions improve. She gave us a rain check for 2 players since we were not real happy. Class act!! I would not play Jones course until conditions improve.
Thank you for the review - I am glad to see you were given a rain-check round as we want all our golfers to have the best experience possible.
Please allow me to shed some light as to why our course is in its current condition. We recently faced water restrictions mandated in response to the failure of the County water tank (which feeds our irrigation system). This led to increased demands put onto the City’s water supplies.
In turn, our golf courses received water levels significantly below normal needs. It also coincided with the hottest and driest time of the summer.
Unfortunately for the Jones and Palmer, fairway turf quality took a hit. Poa annua (Jones' Grass) is less resistant to sweltering heats. Extensive re-grassing will now take place late-July. Bent grass (found on the Palmer) is more resistant to hot, dry conditions. Just four fairways will be reseeded, along with small swales and high tops.
We pride ourselves on being straightforward with guests. Our team is working tirelessly to restore Oglebay’s championship-level conditioning standard. While I assume you we paid our 'water bill' we hope to see you back at Oglebay to use your rain - check round.
Toftrees Resort
Played On 06/08/2018Great day! But!
Having played Toftrees many times, I thought I would treat my wife to a day of golf at the great golf course. My wife absolutely loved it. Conditions were excellent. Greens were a little spotty but very playable. However, the starter originally had us paired with another twosome, but penciled in a twosome into our tee time at 11:54 making 6 players for one tee time. Starter asked the walk-ons if they wanted to play with the other twosome we were scheduled to play with and the walk-on group was given our tee time which is not right. The twosome that walked on should have to wait for an opening not "squeezing" us out of ours. Now I had great time playing the course, and I know I am unusual in requesting to play with another twosome since people like to play by themselves, but your course needs to reconsider their tee sheet procedures. I recommend this course to anyone in the area.
Independence Golf Club - Championship
Played On 10/15/2017Bombers paradise, Great greens, lousy restaurant.
Son and I played there on a long weekend trip about 6 hours from home. Played with two great members from Independence GC. Was greeted by great staff and starter. Length is great for the appropriate tees you should play. Fairways were in excellent shape. But star of this course is the greens. 10.5 on stimp. Undulating greens that made some putts very interesting and fun at the same time. Very smooth. No ball marks on greens since they were fairly firm. If you hit a solid shot, you would make a small one. Very playable layout that was not overly hard. Fairways wide and bunkers were very playable. Played in 4 hours, which is great. $85.00 is just a little too much to pay for Independence GC. In my opinion should be around $50.00, but would play here again if in the area. Now for the bad news. Restaurant was not kind to us since it took over 30 minutes to get any food ordered. Was not the waitress fault, but she went to kitchen 2 times to advise them we were driving a long way home and were very hungry. Paid for drinks, left tip for server and left. By the way the food coming out of the kitchen looked very good! Hopefully we will be back soon. Give the pilot(front desk) and air traffic controller(starter) a raise!! They were fantastic!!
Magnolia Green Golf Club
Played On 10/14/2017Great Nichlaus Layout
Son and I played here on a long weekend trip. Played with two great members from Magnolia Greens. This was a typical Nicklaus influence with some difficult greens and bunkering, but very playable. Greens were not as fast as we liked but very smooth and puttable. Layout was very nice with different holes that were not overly tough. Had a problem with getting to the driving range which was a mile away. That will rectified when the clubhouse is finished in about 2 weeks. It looks absolutely great from the outside. Would definitely play again if in the area. Only problem I see is that in my honest opinion, the greens were a little more than I think the course should be. $55.00 would be a fair price. I understand why they charge what they do now. Thanks again for a wonderful day of golf!!
Spring Creek Golf Club
Played On 10/13/2017Best golf course in Virginia
Let's be honest!! This is the second time I have play this magnificent track. Conditions were very wet but very playable, even though it was cart path only. The layout is fantastic!! No two holes the same. The greens were in great shape. If you do not like this golf course, there is something wrong with you. My son, a former college golfer, indicated he would play there any time he is in the 100 mile radius. I would also like to mention that there was a rumor from the member we played with that within a year, it will private, so if you have any chance of playing the #4 rated course in Virginia by Golf Digest.
The Quarry Golf Club
Played On 10/06/2017Wet and Wonderful !!!
Played Quarry for the first time with 3 other gentlemen. Course was extremely wet from either rain or watering by course superintendent. Course was very playable with lift, clean, and place. Rough was lush as usual. But the surprising thing was the greens were very smooth and enjoyable to play on. Great layout with no two holes the same. I will be playing this course again real soon.
South at Mill Creek Park Golf Course
Played On 07/10/2017Donald Ross gem!!
Drove 1 1/2 hours to play here today with my wife. It is well worth it. I love to walk on a golf course, but as I get older I realize I have to walk flatter courses. This is one of them. Where can you get a Donald Ross designed course for $21.00, NO WHERE ELSE. Back tees are 6500 yards, 6170 from the middle tees. Tees, fairways, and most of all, the greens, were in great condition. Staff is extremely friendly. I have been coming to Mill Creek to play both North and South courses for about 45 years and it is well worth the trip. Please give it a try and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Champion Lakes Golf Course
Played On 07/03/2017Great tight layout
Champion Lakes is a great layout that will have your head spinning. Course conditions were great. It is very tight and greens are very fast for a public course. Course is well worth the money. As a side note, Mr Dick Groat, Pittsburgh Pirate shortstop from the 60's, is owner and has been welcoming us for over 45 years. He is a class act and is more than willing to talk to you about what can be done to improve the course. Does not need much. His daughter has taken over the day to day operations and remembered us even though I had not been there for over 2 years. They have a great course and I hope you will play it soon.
Blue Ridge Country Club
Played On 10/15/2016Excellent course, slow greens
First time for my son and me. Was told the conditions were the same at both Colonial and Blue Ridge. We were persuaded by members of Hershey CC to play Colonial Golf and Tennis Club instead of Blue Ridge CC. However when we called Colonial, they indicated to us Blue Ridge CC was the same as Blue Ridge, especially tee time was not available until 2:30 pm. Course conditions were very good, but greens were very slow. That was not stated by pro shop at the time we went there. Very playable golf course, even though very back and forth. 8 Holes played the same. Bunkers and rough were very playable, although sand inconsistent. Played in 3:15. One last comment. Colonial GC gave me impression that they did not want open play. I cannot say for sure, but anytime you put Arthur Hills as an architect on a course, it has to be better than any other course in the area. Blue Ridge is not Arthur Hills, Colonial is. I would still play Blue Ridge CC if in the area again.
Thank you for your review, birdieman601. We will pass along your positive experience to our team at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
