Chardonnay Golf Club
Played On 05/18/2017Plenty of Challenges on this Course
There are plenty of challenges on this course. There is water to cross and the greens are fast and convoluted. But we had a great time. The views from various points on the course are great – grape vines and hills.
Some of the shots to the green are nearly blind because of the growth of trees. These probably should be pruned back.
Cypress Lakes Golf Course
Played On 05/11/2017Windy and Fun
Cypress Lakes is a fun course to play. The terrain is flat but the greens are built up. There is some water on the course to add some challenges. Hole #18 is an interesting rick-reward hole. The rough was a few inches deep and very sticky. It was hard to hit good approach shots from the rough because of this. The greens were very fast and moderately undulating. The biggest factor was the wind that blew constantly all afternoon. The wind added to the calculus needed for each shot. The greens and fairways were in good condition. All in all, we had an enjoyable afternoon playing Cypress Lakes and would play it again.
Peacock Gap Golf Club
Played On 05/05/2017Plenty of Creeks and Undulating Greens
We played on a Friday afternoon. There was a tournament at the same time so we started on the 14th hole. The pace of play was excellent. Most of the course is mostly flat but there are creeks on many of the holes (parallel and crossing) and the greens have plenty of undulations. All the staff was very friendly. Some wind came up late in the day to add some complexity to decision making.
Rancho Solano Golf Course
Played On 04/06/2017An Enjoyable Course to Play
We played just before the rain hit the course. It was overcast but otherwise very nice for golf. The weather kept people away, so we could play at our own pace with no slow groups in front. There were a few wet areas in some fairways but otherwise it was fine. The greens were dry, reasonably fast, and in good condition.
The course has several lakes/ponds which can come into play if you are not careful. There are some nice elevation changes and fairway slopes and undulations to make playing interesting.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon of golf and we will return.
Dublin Ranch Golf Course
Played On 03/30/2017Don't Let the Yardage Fool You
We played on a cool and windy afternoon. The course was in fine shape. The greens were very contoured and very fast, adding to the challenge. There are plenty of elevation changes from the tees and the wind added to the thought processes.
Even with eleven par 3 holes, there are plenty of challenges on each hole to make it enjoyable.
We had a fine afternoon and would come back again.
Lake Chabot Golf Course - The 18 Hole Course
Played On 08/30/2016Hills and Valleys
Lake Chabot GC is very hilly. The greens were somewhat slow but in excellent condition. Some of the fairways had large bare spots necessitating hitting off bare dirt. There are plenty of uphill shots to greens requiring thoughtful club and shot selection. Of course, the par 6 eighteenth hole is fun to play and a great way to end the day. There are a few forced carries. The course would be quite difficult to walk. The course is located in the country and it is hard to believe you are in the city of Oakland. Overall, a fun course to play. It took us only four hours to complete our round.
Shoreline Golf Links at Mountain View
Played On 05/24/2016Several Forced Carries and Fast Greens
The City of Mountain View has done a good job of taking an old city dump and making it into a large park which includes a golf course. The layout is interesting. There are several forced carries that give the course a challenge, especially when the wind is up. The greens were fast adding to the challenge. The greens and fairways are in good condition.
I thought the pace of play was a little slow. We had to wait at almost every hole. There was a five-some a few groups in front of us. I didn't realize the course allows this.
Deep Cliff Golf Course
Played On 02/12/2016An Enjoyable Course
I haven't played Deep Cliff in 5-6 years. It is evident that there is a lot of work going on to improve the condition of the course. I do hope the mats on many of the tees are temporary or only when conditions are too wet for grass tees. With the cliffs on one side of the course, it is a scenic location in the heart of a residential area.
The course can be a fun place to practice your short to mid-iron shots to greens. Also, it would be a good place for beginners and short hitters. The par 4's don't require a driver to be playable. But, the fairways can be narrow. Walking is easy on this course.
The pace of play was rather slow the first nine, but several groups quit at the turn so this picked up the pace.
Callippe Preserve Golf Course
Played On 02/08/2016Need Local Knowledge
Callippe Preserve is a very challenging course. You need to play it several times to know how to play it and where everything is. The course and the greens were in very good shape. There is plenty of undulations on these greens. The front side plays easier than the back side. There are plenty of carries over creeks and steep hills. The course requires some careful shot placement. The natural areas are closed to golfers, so you can't look for your wayward shot.
The weather was excellent the day we played and the hills were green. Very nice.
Be sure you look at the 18th fairway from the first tee. The information will come in handy.
Eagle Ridge Golf Club
Played On 08/06/2015A Great Location
Eagle Ridge GC is located in the foothills west of Gilroy. Although there are quite large houses around the course, they don’t impose on the course. The location and vistas are great. The course uses recycled water so the tees, fairways and greens are is good shape. The fairways are wider than they appear from many of the tees. You do have to think about where to place your shot to get ready for the next shot. The greens and around the greens are greatly undulated so try to get on the correct level of the green. The greens are fast but roll true.
I was only in one bunker all day, a fairway bunker, and found the sand to be shallow and rather hard. This is what other reviewers have written recently.
We were a twosome and zoomed around the course since it was not busy. However, late in the round we got behind a very, very slow foursome who would not let us through. Hence, my "average" rating for pace of play.
Overall, it was a great day. It helps to play this course a few times to learn where the hidden adventures are and where to place your shots.
The hot deal made it affordable.
Shadow Lakes Club
Played On 07/16/2015No Flat Lies
Every hole on this course has plenty of sloped fairways making for plenty of challenges. There is also water to keep play interesting. The greens were fairly fast and with plenty of break.
Be aware there are three holes (other than the par 3's) you cannot take the cart onto the fairway. One hole is straight up hill. For some, this can be quite difficult.
The day we played the temperature got into the mid-90's. Drink plenty of water.
Deer Ridge GC is nearby to make 36 good holes.
Redwood Canyon Golf Course
Played On 07/02/2015A Work in Progress
As others have noted, the course is in the midst of an ownership and management change. The course needs a lot of work to come up to speed. There is clear evidence that this work is in progress. Some of the greens had burn areas due to a lack of water. The management clearly posted a notice that there was a problem with their watering system for a few days which caused the burned areas. Bravo for them to be upfront about this.
When this course is brought up to speed it will be a fairly short but challenging course but with very narrow fairways lined with trees and creeks on every hole. Each nine holes are place in a separate valley. There are no houses around. This is a great setting. You feel as though you were out in the country. There are plenty of challenges on the course to keep you thinking. Bring a few extra golf balls.
Deer Ridge Golf Club
Played On 05/20/2015Plenty of Wind
There was plenty of wind the day we played. It added to the challenges of the course. There are many hidden areas crossing fairways that you want to avoid. There are also plenty of forced carries. The bunkers were is fairly good shape and easy to play. The pace of play for a foursome was great. Very little waiting.
Some of the pin placements were challenging. One par 3 playing into the wind had the pin placed such that putting up hill to the pin from ten feet and coming up 6 inches short resulted in the ball rolling back to where I started. This isn’t the U.S. Open!
Otherwise, a fun day. It helps to play this course a few times to get the lay of the land. There are nice views looking down onto the Delta.
Poplar Creek Golf Course
Played On 05/13/2015A Well Kept Muni Course
Now that the driving range is completed and all 18 holed are open, I decided to try Poplar Creek again. The weather was good the day we played. It can be windy there, though. The pace of play was also very good. With the addition of the driving range, the routing of a few holes has changed. #16 went from being a challenging par 4 to a more playable par 5. Holes #2 and #3 continue to be difficult, especially being so early in the round.
For a muni course with all the play it gets and the drought, the staff keeps the course in good condition. It is worth playing.
Monarch Bay Golf Club - Tony Lema Course
Played On 04/10/2015Great Vistas
The vistas on the course are great. I could see from San Jose to Marin County. The course is a links style course. There are very few trees. It did get windy in the late afternoon which added a challenge to playing the course. The course is a nice layout with challenges without being overwhelming. There are a few forced carries and some water hazards.
The greens had been punched and sanded about 10 days previously, so the greens were bumpy. There was no aerification warning, however.
There are a driving range, practice chipping green and bunker to use.
A fun course to play and worth returning to again.
Brentwood Golf Club - Creekside/Hillside Course
Played On 03/06/2015Watch Out for the Water
We played the Creekside and Hillside nines (there are three). The course was in fine shape. There is plenty of water around the course to provide many challenges. Some is obscured - until it is too late. The fairways were firm and fast. So were the greens. There wee plenty of challenges once we got on the greens.
We took advantage of a GolfNow HotDeal making the round very reasonable.
Some of the bunkers had plenty of sand and some were hard, almost like dried dirt. This is an area the course management needs to work on.
Another drawback was the pace of play. Five hours for the round is too long.
There are plenty of houses around the course as well.
Adobe Creek Golf Course
Played On 02/18/2015Lots of Narrow Fairways
We enjoyed our day at Adobe Creek. The pace of play was very good. The course was in good shape. The greens have plenty of subtle breaks. There are plenty of narrow fairways with either water or out of bounds to give one pause.
There are a grass tee driving range, bunker, and two good practice greens.
The Hot Deal on GolfNow really made this a good deal.
The club house is closed and for lease so were no such amenities available.
Boundary Oak Golf Course
Played On 01/21/2015Firm and Fast Greens
While the course is not too difficult, the greens make up for it. The greens were firm and fast. There are plenty of breaks that don't show up until you are watching your ball trickle across most of the green. The sand in the bunkers is very fine grained. There is plenty of roll on the fairways.
It was a fun day and a course worth going back to.
DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge
Played On 11/19/2014Lots of Lateral Hazards
We played on a rainy day which added to the challenge of the course. It is a nice course to play. We saw plenty of walkers out there as well. There are plenty of challenges in the course: hilly, trees, plenty of lateral hazards with steep ravines, and some forced carries. The fairways seemed very thin (probably the drought) making some fairway shots more difficult. The greens were bumpy and had just been fed (flakes on all the greens). However, I putted quite well (30 putts). The course is in a park so there are no houses around, just the wildlife and trees.
Overall, we had a good time and I will play it again.
Spring Valley Golf Course
Played On 11/18/2014Narrow Fairways
The course is not very long but the fairways are narrow to compensate. There is one lake that comes into play on three holes requiring long forced carries on the tee shots. Not very many bunkers on the course. The greens are in good shape but have more break in them than is apparent. Also, the greens were hard to hold. Chip shots often ran past the hole and took a large break as well. Overall, it was an enjoyable round.
While the course is in Milpitas, the course is situated in the foothills with nothing but open space around it. Very nice.
