Even Better Than I Remembered

I hadn't played Sleepy Hollow in over 20 years, and the course is not disappoint me. Conditions were first rate. The rough was penal, the greens were firm and fast, and the pace of play was right on four hours. The blue tees were certainly demanding. Some of the pin positions were diabolical on a Monday. The staff were friendly and helpful. It will not be another 20 years before I go back.

Keeps Getting Better

This was my first round at the River in about a year. Things keep improving. The new pro shop is great, the addition of a beverage cart was good although she forgot my request for one of their fabulous chocolate chip cookies.
I was sorry to see the big tree in front of the green on #2 was taken down. I would rather they lost some on 9 and 18. The greens by the airport had a lot of poa in them, but otherwise course conditions keep improving.

Lots of Doglegs

This Arthur Hills course has a lot of character. The area has had a lot of rain this spring so the course was not exactly firm and fast. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The driving range is huge as is the putting green. Pace of play was good for the front nine then things bogged down, it was a five hour round. That said it was the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. The course features many holes with doglegs and lots of terrain. There were not many level lies to be found. The greens were a bit bumpy and slow. Overall it was a beautiful day and an interesting course.

Better, but still room for improvement

This was my first time at The River for almost a year. I had heard the new owners were putting money into it, and there were clearly signs of improvement in condition. This is a tough time of year for north Florida golf courses and it shows. The greens were quite shaggy. They had just been sanded and perhaps that prevented the grounds crew from cutting them. Staff is always friendly and the cookies are wonderful. $10 for a bag of range balls seems excessive though.

Hit Your Spots

North Hampton is set in a residential neighborhood not far from Amelia Island. For the most part, the houses do not come into play. In the winter the Bermuda grass goes dormant so playing on brown is unusual, but the conditions are still quite good. The greens can be fast and they roll true.
An Arnold Palmer design, the course has a wide range of holes in terms of length and direction. The wind was howling on my last visit and that made it easy to get into trouble. Although the fairways are generally wide it is important to end up in the proper place to get onto the greens. There are a number of marsh and ponds that set up forced carries.
There is a driving range and steeply sloped putting green. The carts are newer and the staff is helpful. Good value for money.

Hard but Fair Test

Long Point is extremely well maintained and when the wind blows it can be really hard. The greens are hard and fast. This may not be one of Tom Fazio's best efforts, but given the desire or need to squeeze holes in on the ocean side of the street it is well designed. There is good variety of hole directions and the doglegs are not all in the same direction. The greens tend to be elevated and not too big (especially on the par fives). The staff is friendly and accommodating, and the facilities are what one would expect from a private club. The best course in the county.

Always a joy to play

Mountain Lake is one of the finest and best maintained courses in Florida. Still true to Seth Raynor's design it has a great mix of demanding holes, although only two par fives. From the back tees it is a real challenge especially if the wind is blowing. This trip the weather was perfect, course conditions were fabulous and as always Jonathan and his team take great care of the members and guests.

Cherry on Top

After spending the morning getting a tour of the wildlife sanctuary and a delicious brunch at the lodge, three of us played the White Oak golf course. This is an interesting and challenging nine hole course, but with two sets of tees on each hole. Some involve different yardages, others different angles to the fairway or green. While the practice area was closed due to wet conditions the rest of our time was wonderful. Jamie and Todd took great care of us, the gazebo has water and soft drinks, and the course is in great shape. Greens were true and of a reasonable speed. What a great day.

Like playing your home course

I hadn't played Dooks in over 20 years and while the course had been changed the feeling and warmth of the Club had not. We were greeted by the pro as we arrived and quickly made to feel at home . While there is no driving range there is a nice short game area and nets to warm up. The starter got us off right on time
A strong wind greeted us on the first tee and fortunately subsided a bit as the afternoon wore on. While not long the course is challenging especially with the pin placements we faced. Don't play this place on the weekend since they usually have a member competition of some sort and set it up accordingly.
The access to the greens was more limited since the changes made to the course in 2006. You need to be precise in your approach shots or were facing tricky shots from collection areas or bunkers.
Sean the caddy and Sean the barman were both great ambassadors for a wonderful club. Looking forward to my next trip there.

Fun Course, Friendly Staff, First Class Service

Hogs Head's motto is "Built by friends, for friends, for fun". This was certainly true. Our group of 12 arrived early for our tee times, and were met by the first of many friendly and welcoming members of the Hogs Head team. They quickly sorted out our needs and directed us to the locker rooms and assured us we could get out early if we wanted to. After a quick and delicious breakfast/lunch we were introduced to our caddies and hit the driving range and practice green,
The wind was howling. Our caddies said it was the strongest they had encountered since the course opened. Fortunately we only lost one hat to the wind (my caddy's) and a few golf balls blown off the course.
The course is immaculate with lush fairways and well manicured greens. Absent the wind it would have been an eminently fair test of golf with 5 sets of tees to choose from. We actually used a forward set for holes into the wind and one further back for the downwind holes.
Caddies are mandatory and well worth it. They were friendly and knowledgable, helping immensely with the yardages and line given the wind.
The bar is beautiful and our barman Barry had some great. stories to tell. It was a wonderful place to end the day.

Trip Highlight

The entrance to Atunoyte has one of the most spectacular gates you will see. The long and winding road gives you a preview of what the golf course will offer. Doug met us at the bag drop and proved to be an invaluable asset with guidance on where to go to change, check in, and get to the practice facility. Although we failed that since we didn't listen well.
As the host of a Tour event they have all the facilities although the locker room only has two showers. While not the best Fazio course I have played this one is well thought out and offers plenty of challenge depending on the tees you select.
The conditioning was excellent. We were virtually alone on. the course. New carts have GPS systems. Great mix of par threes, plenty of water and bunkers to avoid. After the round we showered and changed and enjoyed a tasty lunch before heading home. A great end to our trip.

Classic Ross Course

While this course has been updated several times over the years it is still a classic Donald Ross layout. The conditions are first class and there are plenty of hazards to get your attention. After a few relatively short holes the course starts to show its teeth. Holes 5-7 are the Trent Jones designs, but they meld seamlessly with the rest of the course. Gil Hanse has taken out a lot of trees creating some wonderful views across the layout. The last two holes are challenging finishers. Staff were all great.

Blind shots and fast greens

Mayfield is a hidden gem in the midst of Lyndhurst Ohio. An old time golf course designed by Bertie Way (designer of Firestone South) in the early 1900s, it has stood the test of time. The conditioning is immaculate with fast greens providing the first line of defense for a relatively short course. A par 71 with five par 3s and three par 5s there are few holes (other than the par 3s) where the green is visible from the tee. Be sure to take a caddy although it is a challenging walk with lots of hills to climb. The only design flaw is that all the par 3s play in the same direction. Otherwise there are lots of interesting holes demanding intelligent shot making. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is outstanding.

Not Long but a Good Test

This McCumber/Littler design is not long but has plenty of trouble with water, trees, bunkers, and marsh to catch any errant shots. It gets off to a tough start with a tight par 4 and and sharp and long dogleg left par 5. Water is in play on much of the front nine and the marsh features on the back side. The wind off the Atlantic adds to the challenges. Carts feature GPS, and the staff are all helpful and friendly. While private if you stay at the Ritz you get access.

Good layout, gets lots of play

I booked this online and had no troubles checking in. The range and practice area were all in good shape. When they tell you the expected pace of play is 4 hours 30 minutes you know it will be a slow day. We ended up hitting the target. The course is interesting with a number of good holes. One interesting facet was a sign on each of the par 3s with the exact yardage for that day from each set of tees. The fairways and tees were well worn and the greens were in pretty good shape. This course clearly gets a lot of play. A nice lunch was included in my resident price. No need to go back since there are a lot of other courses to play in the Orlando area.
