The Rockland Farm Course at Shenandoah Valley
Played On 04/13/2018Nice day
The surprise 80 degree brought out many players but the pace of play was steady. Greens are in excellent shape and fairways were nicely cut. The only negative are the cart paths that are getting worse every time we play. Hope they can be improved.

The temperature hit 50 degrees and no wind making it a perfect day for a mid winter round. Some fairways mostly shaded were still covered with ice but all the greens were great. Who can ever complain when you can play golf on January 26 in Virginia? Loved it.

When the weather forecast was 50 degrees and no wind, we decided to sneak in a round on Friday. We usually don't play golf in January but it was great considering that in some areas the fairways were frozen solid. On a few tee boxes that were shaded, we couldn't get a tee in ground so we put the drivers away. But it was great just being out there. Looking forward to many more rounds when the weather improves.

The weather has cooled off and the day was perfect with blue skies highlighting the fairways as some of the trees took on fall foliage. The rough that was extremely deep the week before had been cut to a reasonable height and the traps were properly raked. The greens as always were in excellent condition. Hoping to enjoy fall golf again soon.

Bowling Green South is a great place to play and very much worth the hour drive getting there. Amazingly the greens are almost flawless every time I play there. Each fairway is marked by huge trees that enhance the overall appearance of the course. Cart paths are sparse and traps could use a consistent amount of sand. But that doesn't detract from all the pluses.
Virginia Oaks Golf Club
Played On 09/09/2016What happened?
I haven't played the Oaks in a few years and I was appalled at the condition of the course. When we checked in, we were told that the course was being aerated and then we received free passes to play in the future(Golf cart not included). On the first hole, what we saw was a tee box sparsely covered with weeds and a fairway that was almost burnt out. And that was one of the better holes. Fairways in many cases were nothing but mud with the plugs laying on top. Out of the 18 greens only two were totally green with the rest having bare patches everywhere. I talked to the groundskeeper and was told the browning was because of lack of rain. However just across the lake was the Stonewall course totally green and well maintained. The plan is to seed the Oaks next week and magically he said all would be well in two weeks. That would be a miracle. This course has had several changes in ownership and it is evident that money for maintenance is very limited. I'll never return to the Oaks.
Somerset Farms Golf Course
Played On 08/27/2015A different experience
Compared to the many other courses in Virginia, this one has distinctive characteristics all its own. The elevation changes were amazing and the dog legs often resulted in blind tee shots. The fairway grass was uniform and the huge greens were consistently smooth and putt-able. As other reviews mentioned the tee boxes were hard and scarce of grass which made tee shots especially on the par 3s a challenge. One minor suggestion is to have arrows painted in the cart paths leading to the next tee( Meadow Farms uses this technique) Overall a nice change of pace and worth the drive from Gainesville.
Longest Hole/Waterfall at Meadows Farms Golf Course
Played On 08/18/2015A mixed experience
This round comes after not playing the course in the past few years. The layout is interesting and the fairways and greens were in good shape. However some of the tee boxes were less than impressive. And there appears to be a lack of commitment on keeping some of the holes in shape. For example the Waterfall hole lacked the appearance it had in the past and the Baseball hole has lost all its luster with the signs in the backdrop especially. But overall, the course was a fun place to play.

I drive about 45 minutes to play this course for two reasons, reasonably priced and in good condition. During the week, pace of play is determined by time of day. Yesterday we teed off at noon and finished in 2:30 hours. Greens were fine, fairways cut, but the sand traps hadn't been racked after rain the previous night. That's always an issue here because there isn't a consistent effort to maintain the traps. Overall it's worth the drive to play a senior friendly course.
Broad Run Golf & Practice Facility
Played On 08/08/2015A nice fit
This course fills the bill for players of all ages. As a senior, the layout was fair and yet there were challenges like the 7th and 9th holes. Greens were in great shape even better than more expensive courses in the area. The practice facility is one of the very best.
Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club
Played On 09/05/2014What a shame
This was my first round of golf here and from the highway the course looked wonderful. But what I found were tee boxes torn up and dried out, two greens with wide areas of burnt out grass cutting the greens in two, one fairway bunker totally ruined and all other bunkers weren't raked, and ruts in and around the greens where mowing equipment dug up the soil. The layout is fantaastic and challenging indeed but the condition was poor at best. When this first opened, it was a natural beauty and an up scale daily fee operation. From my perspective, there is no infusion of money to maintain it as it once was and should be. It may soon join the ranks of failing golf courses. How sad!

The course was in excellent shape especially the greens. As a twosome, we moved along at a steady pace and finished 18 holes in 3 hours with noone in front of us. We have played here for many years and it seems to improve each year. You can't beat the very reasonable fees.
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are aware of the poor course conditions and have all hands on deck to get them back to standards we would normally expect. It has been an extraordinarily difficult Summer and the golf course has experienced significant turf issues. We know you have other golfing options and very much appreciate your continued support. Over the upcoming weeks we will continue aerifying, seeding, and fertilizing the entire golf course multiple times. We have already begun an aggressive renovation and we are hopeful for a quick turn around and excellent conditions once we are complete. We hope you'll give us another shot!
