Seems like locals only

I go to Myrtle Beach every year on vacation and have played 30+ golf courses there. And my number one golf value as a golfer is maintaining a reasonable pace of play, even on vacation, something under 4 hours is just fine. I preface with that because I've never had this complaint before: this plays needs to calm down with pushing groups.

When you go to MB, and probably any golf vacation, even places that highly value pace of play, that pace finds a way to relax a little. We were the first group out, 7:30, and it felt like rather than the ten minute spacing that's standard, by the fourth hole, less than an hour, there was a group standing in the fairway right behind us. We finished the front nine in an hour and fifteen minutes...and by the time we teed off on ten, there was another pair of carts with loudly talking customers right behind us, again. It made the day feel rushed...how fast were we supposed to play, 18 holes in 2:30? It was ridiculous. I'll never go back.

It felt like the people we were playing with were disappointed we weren't locals, and were taking up their tee times. It was absolutely aggravating, and I'd never recommend this place to anyone as a result. As decent as the course was, there are far too many other options that are at least as nice, at a similar price point, within really short distances (Wild Wing, Man O War, The Witch, International World Tour are all within 10 minutes). Avoid it.

Value depends on the price

For the listed retail price of $105, I don't think this course would be worth it, but we got it for more than half off, which made it a steal. It's a formerly fully private course that's now "semi private" (so basically public), it seems to be trying to find its price point. It was really, really empty, I mean so empty my group didn't see another group the entire day on the course, which I thought was unusual for a Tuesday after a holiday. The place was beatufiul, though, excellent design, lots of up and downs. There are six par 3's, which might bother some I guess. Fairly challenging, but not overly penal, either. The place was really well kept, nice and green even after a very long dry stretch. It'd be great in the fall, too.

The only downside is that this area of New Jersey is really in this weird inacessible spot, like unless you live there, it takes you an hour to get there. Strange!

Great value, well kept, tricky

I booked it as a same day prepay and saved something like 65%, so this was a ridiculously good deal. Overall the course is a lot of fun, but tricky. I don't know how, but it seemed like 15 holes were going uphill, that was a little rough, and there can be a pretty severe level of sideways slope on fairways. I'd say it's a generally more difficult than the average course. THe starters were both really nice, and I got paired with a couple of singles. They let us all have our own carts and we were done in 3:45. GIven the drought in Cali, the conditions were excellent.

It's....meh. Is "janky" a word?

I really, really wanted (expected) this course to be commensurate with the website. It's got a great tour, looks like a lot of visual appeal, but I have to say it falls well short of value for dollar. It's not that it's a BAD course, the problem is that it's not worth driving to (if you are in Atlantic City already, it's not bad, but you'll pass better courses on your way), and it's certainly not worth $79. Once you pass a certain price threshold, in my view, you have to do the little things right.

No range for $79? Not good. Old gas carts? OUghta be electric. Maybe pave the back nine cart path? The front nine is better than the back nine, there are a lot of neat holes on it, it's just not a good enough course with no real amenities at this price point. At $50 cart included, this is a good value, but this place has to compete with Seaview (twenty minutes further north) and Twisted Dunes (same exit I think), it's just not in that class. And that doesn't even bring the other AC Area courses into play. This is a third rate resort course.

I would not recommend this course.

Can't beat the scenery, but it can beat you

The only bad part about this spot was for some reason, they let a fivesome, including some off duty employees, out in front of us. They were playing skins, so every green took forever. We waited on every hole, almost every shot, and it was impossible to establish a rhythm, which for a guy like me makes it difficult to play well.

BUT, on the good side? The course is amazing. Everything you see on their site, those pictures, they're the real deal. The course itself seems to have suffered some from the drought, as there were some browned out spots in the fairways, but otherwise, excellent conditions, especially the greens. The scenery is ust overwhelming, The fourteenth, a par 3 alongside the rocks, is really breathtaking.

Also, if you happen to get lucky enough to be paired with a marshal named Cheech (he was on his day off), he's a really great partner, and really reps this course well.

Top Shelf County Golf

This course gets a lot of local hype, Monmouth County calls it their "crown jewel," and they're not wrong. I'd put this course up against any municipal course, anywhere, as far as quality of the actual golf course goes. We had to play it back nine first due to some unannounced drainage maintenance in the 8th fairway (the people at the desk didn't mention anything about it at all when we checked in, just a crew of like six guys digging across the width of the entire hole, with no one there to watch out for them or to instruct the golfer how to proceed).

Anyway, from hole #8 (long, uphill par 4 that should be the #1 on the card) on, I think you'd be very hard pressed to find eleven consecutive nicer golf holes in a municipal system anywhere, and I've played a lot of places around the country. The par 5 14th, followed by a beautiful par 4 uphill left turn, then down the hill par 3, back up for a par 5, just outstanding construction and design. Worth the out of county rate (about $60).

Problem here is the fake "members." The entire area in and around the pro shop seems replete with these guys who think they belong to Trump National down the block. The counter staff is, on its best day, grumpy and seem inconvenienced (I never get this...if you don't like working at 8 in the morning, find something else to do),, on its worst day rude and dismissive. The other BIG problem is their range. Outdated old mat (one long strip), and you can't get a tee into it right to work up your driver. Step off the mat, even by a foot, and the starter's on you to get back on the mat. I'm using a 2 3/4 inch white tee with a driver, not practicing trying to gouge the ball to put spin on it. Lay off.

A friend of mine put it just right: once you're away from the first tee, it's an amazing day. Well worth it.

Great value, great practice, easy walk

I've played this executive course every Sunday morning for the last two years, and it's an outstanding executive course. It's county owned, so don't expect anything fancy, but at the same time, at par 61, they manage to mix up the holes perfectly so it's never boring (1 par 5, 5 par 4's, 12 par 3's ranging from 92 to 190). The greens can be really tough (I still haven't figured out 14), and there's a number of threes that are really challenging (don't let the numbers on the cards fool you).

The best part is you can play this course, if you go early, in well under three hours. I don't mind running into beginners here because it's such a valuable place to work on irons and course management, stuff you can't do on a range, which is where most of the beginners think you have to work everything out. It's important to learn to use creativity and it really sharpens your short game.

This place features the rare junior tees (green, way up in the fairway), great for kids to learn on, and the six AM crowd is generally a bunch of decent guys. At well under $25 in the mornings and something like $18 in the afternoon, great value, fun course.

Remote Location in NJ, Needs to be Special

We happened to be down in the area for a kids' soccer tournament, and decided to take advantage of being so close to Cape May National. We played the middle afternoon (1:30) rate at $69, which was the same regardless of if you walked or rode (EXCEPTIONALLY walkable course, as you might expect this area f the state is really flat), which stinks for out of towners. But I guess like everything else down here in the summer, things cost about twice what they should because demand so far outpaces supply. Except this course was basically empty. The guy who took our bags was really nice, but inside they're a little apathetic towards customers.

Course itself is laid out so that from the white tees (was playing with a beginner), a guy in my handicap range can only use his driver like five or six times, and I don't hit it long, 240 - 260. That can be good, if you like to hit woods and out think the golf course, or bad, if you are better with your driver.

Tee boxes were largely chewed up, but the greens were excellent. Sand traps are a little hard because, according to the chatty 'member' who got tacked on to our group, they're at water table level and hard to keep soft. Overall course maintenance was pretty nice, the carts were electric (I feel this is something this site should track, gas or electric carts, because no one likes gas carts), and as a positive they had a fantastic course dog to chase away geese. Any course with a dog is okay by me.

Overall, I wouldn't ever play this course again, but largely because it's not worth driving past better golf destinations like Atlantic City and Egg Harbor for better courses at competitive prices.

Great golf in the Georgia hills

Perfect example of Georgia golf, this is exactly what I was looking for. A lot of elevation changes, pretty scenery (ritziest neighborhood I've ever played golf in), at least two waterfalls, just stuff I can't get enough of. I also liked the way they turned four sets of tees into basically seven different tee numbers (Black, Black/Blue, Blue, Blue/White, White, Gold if I remember right). I think more courses would benefit from giving the golfers this flexibility.

Only complaint is some of the greens looked like people didn't clean up their divots, which I never understand, but even more perplexing at a course that has 'members' who should feel an acute obligation to take care of things like that.

Matinee at under $40, including the cart, is an absolute steal. Just make sure to ask the gate which way to the clubhouse, I spent 20 minutes driving around a neighborhood full of houses that must have belonged to former members of the Atlanta Braves and Falcons, they were ridiculously beautiful.

Overrated, but that doesn't mean it's not good

This course gets a LOT of hype around the NJ area, routinely making top numbers on lists like courses you can play, public golf, etc., and they price it accordingly for out of county residents ($75 during the week). I guess I was expecting to be completely wowed by the course with all that in mind, and the best way I can put it is that it's well crafted, expertly maintained, but lacks a little something in the pizzazz department for that kind of money.

Each of the holes is really well designed, with a lot of challenge and shot selection, many requiring you to use your imagination and take real stock of your ability, not just pull your driver 14 times and whale away (you're on the wrong tee if that's what you are doing). But I can't explain it any other way, it's just not a great total COURSE experience for me at that price point. They include the cart, but they charge the same without a cart on a very walkable course, that's just dumb.

Employees also rushed us out, not letting us use the practice green (great greens!), but their practice facility overall is excellent. I just didn't get why we had to get on the first tee so soon, by the third hole we were up the next group's rear end, and stayed there most of the day, it was a really long round. Also, without any trees, all voices carry extra far, so you can hear every other group around you, if that sort of thing bothers you.

Don't get me wrong, I'd go back, it was a great day out, but I feel like I can still do better for $75. And it's in the middle of nowhere.

Great course, how great depends on the deal

Speaking as a snowbird on business travel, this was exactly what the doctor ordered for a February round. Yes, it's a little pricey, even as a hot deal ($80 is a steep discount, which is what I paid), but I find that once I'm out on the course, if I don't ever think of the price, then the price was worth it. If I'm out there on the sixth hole thinking "Wow, this was $80?" then I paid too much. But this place was beautiful, in perfect condition despite the drought in Cali (I know they use reclaimed water but still). My only complaint: some of the sand was WAAAAAY to hard, it was like playing out of the parking lot. Other than that, extremely fair and fun course with a lot of nice wildlife (got a picture of a coyote!).

The only other complaint: SEVENTEEN BUCKS for a bag of balls and a ball marker (coin only), and the little chipping area isn't officially included with your round, costs extra, but if you talk to the guy at the range, he'll tell you you can spend ten minutes or so up there. Still, for the price tag, I feel like you can spare a smaller bag of balls (do you really need 60 balls to warm up?) and unlimited use of the chipping / sand area.

Tough to find South Florida Golf like this, but pricey

As a frequent business traveler who makes several stops in this area, this is the nicest I've found in south Florida golf. Most of the time, it's boring mounds, some water, little trees or character to any of the holes. This one was well laid out, attractive, had a couple of nice wrinkles to it. I played it from about 6300 yards (I'd normally play it at the 6700 but got paired with an older gentleman), it was fun, used all the clubs in the bag. My only complaint was that while it was nice, it wasn't TWICE as nice as the other courses, but it costs twice as much. Still, for a snowbird, this was jusdt what the doctor ordered.

Links-y, walkable and fair

I liked this spot quite a bit. Not a lot of trouble as far as water is concerned, a lot of open layouts, some nice par 3's. The NJ autumn looking out at the valley was really awesome, and the place played really fair. Twenty minute frost delay, but nothing you can do about that this time of year. We ran into a very small pace problem on the last five holes, and the greens were a little chewed with divots and such, but still, well worth the $50. I'd say it's just a shade less than Morgan Hill, but only because Morgan Hill is a ridiculous value.

Front Loaded, Fun and Well Kept

This was one of the most fun golf rounds I've had this year. The first thirteen or fourteen holes are among the most beautiful I've played, but the last five or six are fairly ordinary, which wouldn't be bad if it weren't for the creepy haunted sanitoriums that dot the front part of the property (actually its an old Cornell cooperative complex, but theyre all boarded up and creepy). We are at the end of the year so the tee boxes might have been just a little chewed up, but absolutely within bounds for this time of the season. Greens had been aerated a week prior, they were really fast and rolled true. We played as a threesome, didn't wait on any shots, pace was excellent, just an all around really pleasant day (my +13 over the last six holes can't be blamed on the course, that's just me playing badly). At $50 for the round and the cart, definitely worth the hour plus drive from Jersey.

Bit of advice: there's a par four on the front, the sixth hole, where you will think you can drive the green (from the blues, we played). You can't. Save yourself the stroke, play short of the trap and leave yourself the wedge shot. Both guys I played with tried to drive the green, lost three balls between them.

Like a course with character that's picturesque?

Then find someplace else, because this joint is an absolute dump. Completely bland from the first tee to the eighteenth green, shoddy maintenance on the greens and in the bunkers, and very little in the way of interesting features. Except for the dirt driving range (check out the satellite, it's bizarre), of course. Fivesomes abound, so the pace is insanely slow, a lot of waiting. The biggest hazards on this course are the West Nile Virus traps, otherwise known as the standing water that abounds because of poor drainage, and as a bonus, smells like farts because it's apparently on top of an old cess pool. Just terrible, I wouldn't play here again for free.

Suffering at the end of the summer?

This is a middle of the pack type of course, so the attractiveness depends pretty heavily on the price you pay. At $45, it's pretty solid, but these conditions north of $60 or $65, I think you can do better (Black Gold is a very similar course but much better kept). The members were nice enough, but the greens were beat up pretty bad due to lack of mark repair and it just seemed a little burnt. There's a couple of really nice holes, but nothing I would call "amazing." It's a solid round but if you're traveling from out of town, definitely not worth going out of your way for.

Value depends on price

I paid $75 for a Tuesday AM round, and at that price, it' was a great birthday present for my dad. THe course itself had suffered from a sever rainstorm so collectoin areas were really soggy, but other than that, this place was gorgeous. Four outstanding par 3's and a lot of interesting but challenging par 4's, I like courses where you don't just get to pull driver 14 times without thinking about it, and this was one of them. If i'd paid $100 I'd be a little less impressed, but at this price its a great value, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone in the AC area.

Outstanding Value, TOUGH but fun course

This course is really interesting the longer you're on it. I was a little non-plussed by the first few holes, but they just kept getting better and better. Links style, which I normally find a little boring and bland, but really well designed to keep your brain working. It's a classic type of 'battle' course, you can't beat the course on every hole, you have to take what it gives you and be smart about the way you play. Even with very little real trouble on the course (only one pond), you can still really get into big trouble in a hurry. Excellent greens, fast and difficult but still fun. Highlights are the 140 foot drop par 3 (though the strip mall in the background ruins the picturesque potential), and the tees on 16 and 17. There are a LOT of blind shots, though, so pay attention to the scorecard's tip sheet.

My only downside: no real range, you hit into a net. Otherwise, even at a full price (40 during the week), this is a TREMENDOUS value.

Not in Myrtle Beach!

The main problem I had with this course (I played in an outing here) was that I had to drive by so many comparable or better courses to get here. If you're staying in Myrtle Beach, there are just too many better options closer. There aren't any real signature holes on this course, in spite of a fantastic clubhouse, it's just not worth a drive. Fun but not special.

Nice change of pace

I've played here a number of times, and I really think it's a well done course for the money. Lot of pretty par 3's, but the par 5's are a little boring, and one of them absolutely should not be a par 5 (13th). Any drive over 220 leaves you a mid iron and lower into the green. Comes right in between the two signature par 3's, too, kind of makes it look meh. Overall though, fairways were in good shape, greens a little chewed up. This is, unfortunately, one of those semi privates where the "members' think they're members of some exclusive club, it gets cliquey and "Well I'm a member, let me tell you about this hole!"

The golf on its own merits, this is a well worth it round, easy walk, good deals on carts and on Thursday they'll even buy you lunch. Awful range though.
