Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course
Played On 07/02/2015Beautiful, Challenging
Majestic, breathtaking, grandeur are the types of words that come mind when meandering thru this course...especially 11 - 13...I have never been to a more beautiful course. The course itself is in prime condition and the greens are firm, fast, true, and some are very undulating. The layout is superb and offers a diverse, challenging test of golf. The clubhouse, food, pro shop, range, and service from the moment I arrived is what I would expect from a top 15 public course...the cost for a round is not though...comparing costs of the other top 15 ranked courses for a round, this is cheap! The only thing that was not spot on was the pace of play...we had a 5 hr round even with marshalls trying to move things along. But, honestly, I didn't mind because it gave more time to soak in the views and take pictures waiting for the group in front of us to clear. Even though this bucket list course is checked off my list, I definitely want to go back...it's that good.
Prairie View Golf Club
Played On 05/04/2015Favorite in Indy Area
I have played all the top public courses in the Indy area to include Brickyard and the Fort and this is my favorite. The facilities are great and the staff are very friendly. The course is very well maintained...we had 30 minutes or so of showers midway through the round and they had gators with blowers drying the fairways right after. The carts are GPS equipped so there was never a question on yardage. Now the course...I love this RTJ course. Challenging, diverse holes (I used driver, 3W, 5W, 3H, 4I, 5I, 7I, 9I, and PW on tee shots)...they were challenging yet rewarding and open enough to feel you didn't have to be absolutely perfect. Plus there are multiple tees for all skill levels. There were prairie holes and several that went into the woods and were lined with trees...strategic bunkering, forced carries, great holes carved around the ponds...you can tell this course was meticulously thought out. The greens were fast, true and in prime condition as were the the fairways and bunkering (which is extensive). My brother, who I was visiting, bought a groupon so we had a very good deal...but I would gladly play $80-$100 to play it. If you can play a couple courses in Indiana, play the French Lick courses then play this one!
Stonewolf Golf Club
Played On 01/02/2015Exceptionally Designed, Great Challenge
Preface this review with the fact it was 35* and overcast with a slight breeze the day after New Year's. There was a group teeing off right before us and another starting 20 min later so the staff (very friendly btw) let us start on 10, so we didn't run into anyone all day! Obviously since it is winter it was cart path only, but that was the only thing that slowed pace. Also, since it was winter I won't focus on course condition, though it was very much playable. Now, the best part for last...what an absolute gem of a design...drastic elevation changes, forced carries, undulating greens, strategically placed/deep bunkers, water challenges all in a magnificently beautiful setting! I can't wait to play it again in season!!
The Hills Golf Club at McKendree University
Played On 09/18/2014Course Condition in Poor Shape
This was my first time back in a year and the first time I have played it under the university management. You can tell they are making improvements as the restaurant/club house and parking lot look much, much better. However, with how late it is in the year, the fact lots of students play the course, and reseeding on several holes, the course was in pretty dismal shape...a few of the fairways were pretty bare, parts of the course look like they had a truck mudding in it, and the greens were pelted with unrepaired divots (part of the price of having tons of casual students drinking beer and trying out the game). For the price though which included a cart, I'd have to say I got what I paid for though...pretty cheap prices! Overall though, I wouldn't recommend it as it was pretty disappointing hitting a handful of great iron shots within 10/15 ft of the pin just to see 6 or 7 ruts in my putting line. I really enjoyed the layout of the course so with continued improvements to the course from the university, this definitely could be a place I'd like play...not there yet!
Cardinal Creek Golf Club
Played On 09/14/2014Great Course, Great Value
I love playing this course...it is well maintained and it has a great layout. The front nine is really enjoyable...the four middle holes on the back nine are a little mundane, but the finishing hole...a par 5 which causes two forced carries over a deep creek to reach in two to a green protected by a few giant trees on the left and the creek on the right...is awesome. I think I've seen only three or four divots on the greens thru three summers of frequenting the course...the course is well maintained and the players seem to respect the course. With the cheap prices, I definitely would recommend a trip if you can gain access to the base (it's on a military base).
Brickyard Crossing
Played On 09/07/2014Championship Course
I have played courses that hosted PGA events and overseas courses that are annual stops on the European tour and the condition of this course is just as good if not better. Absolutely beautiful, smooth fairways and greens! The course is also pretty challenging with big but difficult greens, strategically placed hills and deep bunkers, drop offs, creeks, and lakes. Some of the holes are reminiscent of other masterpieces of Dye's like hole 11...you'll swear it is the 18th at Sawgrass. Being around and in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (4 holes are in the infield), made the experience even better. The staff was friendly and the GPS-equipped carts made sure for an accurate, enjoyable day. We did wait a minute or two on the group in front of us each hole, but for a Sunday morning with a full course, the marshall's did a pretty good job making sure things moved along...they even asked if we'd like them to go tell the group in front of us to speed up or to let us play through. All in all, definitely worth the $100/round...I am very glad I got a chance to mark this course off the golf bucket list and would like to play it again
Plum Creek Golf Club
Played On 09/06/2014Simple, beautiful course
I really love playing Plum Creek. Pristine conditions, great Dye layout but also a very open/forgiving course...you can hit a little slice every once in awhile and still be okay. The pace of play was great...even with a group in front and behind, we never waited to tee off. Hard to believe a course in such good condition was only $45 a round after 2 pm. The ProShop and Bar were great...really convenient to make a stop at the turn...the food was just okay though. The staff was exceptionally friendly...after our evening round we went to hit more balls on the range and the staff worker was starting to put the balls away...even though he was cleaning up he dumped a bunch of balls out for us and let us hit a half hour more. If I lived in Indy, this would be my first choice to make my home course....great place and I'll definitely be back next time I am in Indy!
Tamarack Golf Course
Played On 08/24/2014Good Course, Friendly Staff
I played on a blazing hot Sunday afternoon (100*+ with the heat index), so I was one of only a few who braved the heat. As such, the pace of play was outstanding. The other times I have played here the pace has been good too as there is always a marshall, starter or both making sure the pace is correct. Despite the high heat that has been beating down the past several weeks, the course is in great condition tee to green...again, each time I've played it has been...though this time there were a few more ball marks in the greens from lazy hackers not fixing their marks. The staff is a bunch of friendly old guys who love the game and let it show in the upkeep of this great little course. Definitely recommend a round here.
