Blue Fox Run Golf Club - Red Nine
Played On 04/13/2024We Need Courses Like This!
Golfers who have played this course know that it's not the most pristine of tracks - it definitely needs work. However, I never complain about the conditions at Blue Fox Run because you still have to get the ball in the hole. MORE importantly, they are a course that opens as early in the year as possible and stays open as late in the year as possible - which is critical because when you NEED to get a round in and everyone else is closed - there's a chance they will be open. The staff is very accommodating as well. We had a great experience there on Saturday (4/13).
Tallwood Country Club
Played On 04/28/2023Friendly Staff
I was pleased with how friendly the staff was - especially the Starter and even more so, the Ranger. That hasn't always been the case at Tallwood. It has improved over the years but it was much more noticeable this round. The course was in good shape for late April. I appreciate the fact that this course has a nice practice area, especially a sand trap! We'll be back.
Stanley Golf Course - White/Red
Played On 08/27/2020Solid course
Average to above average course. Very fair though.
Oak Ridge Golf Club
Played On 11/01/2018Perfect Greens
Hadn't played the course in a while - the conditions weren't too good. That's changed! Tee to green was average but the greens themselves were perfect.
Tower Ridge Country Club
Played On 09/06/2018Not as bad as it looks
This course has seen better days however it's a great layout with challenging holes (some might say too challenging). They appear to be hurting financially which is a shame because I hate to see any golf course go away. The price they charge reflects the conditions - which really aren't that bad. There was some weeds in a few traps and the greens don't look to good (mainly burnt) however they were very "puttable". The pace of play is great because there's hardly anybody playing the course. I hope they hang in there so i'll play there again. If you're looking for a challenging round at a more that reasonable price, please play Tower Ridge and keep them afloat!
Gillette Ridge
Played On 11/30/2017Good to be back.
I hadn't played this course for over a year as it was suffering from poor maintenance. I had heard that they have since worked on it to get it back to where it was a few years ago so I decided to give it a try again (a good price from Golf Now made the decision easy). I'm happy to report that conditions have improved and I would recommend the course to others. Note that many believe this course falls under the "extremely challenging" category - and it does if you insist on playing from the "tips". If you play the white tees and you become familiar with the layout, the course is "getable" however there are big scores lurking on many holes if you're not on your game - our foursome had an enjoyable experience (despite not all of us bringing our "A Game"). Also note - "Happy Hour" pricing in the bar would be welcome. I'll be back.
Timberlin Golf Club
Played On 09/28/2017Awesome Bunkers!
It's been many years since I've played this course and I forgot how enjoyable it is - but the best part was the condition of their bunkers! I play many course in Central CT and some in Western MA and everyone of them have lousy bunkers. Timberlin has figured out how to make their bunkers playable - there is actually sand in them - go figure. Just about every other course's bunkers have a thin layer of sand with hard clay just underneath. You basically have to "hit and hope" that your wedge doesn't bounce off the clay sending your ball screaming over the green, or close your club face and chunk the ball towards the flag with an unpredictable result. At Timberlin, you can actually open the clubface and swing with confidence that if you use good technique, you'll get a fair result. I don't know why other courses in the area can't replicate this!?! The layout is good with no two holes alike and the conditions of the fairways and greens were excellent. I'll be back (and if you're an area course supervisor/greens keeper, maybe you should inquire with timberlin on how to improve your bunkers).
Black Birch Golf Club
Played On 08/17/2017Improving
First off, I would recommend this course if you get a good price ($30 max). I had not played the course in many years and heard that they had put some money into improving the conditions so I was intrigued. Yes, they have improved the course somewhat but they have more to do. The most notable improvement was their greens - which most players care about. They were in much better condition than when I used to play there. They were a little slow but were but rolled true (I actually had to fix my ball mark a couple of times - which was never the case before!). They have worked on the back nine as well, with improvements to holes 13-15. The clubhouse restauarant is much better and the staff is very friendly. I will be back (and be willing to pay more if they continue to improve the conditions beyond the greens).
Oak Ridge Golf Club
Played On 04/28/2016Greens good, rest needs some work
it's been a couple of years since I've played Oak ridge. I've always like the layout and the value. he greens were in good shape (which is my primary concern) however the rest of the course (tees, fairways and especially bunkers) need some work. You can see that they are working on some areas of the fairways and tees so they are aware of the need. hopefully things will be better in a month or two. Still a good value and an enjoyable course to play - I'll be back.
Raceway Golf Club
Played On 07/24/2015Good Value
I received a good price via an internet tee time site however the courses rates are reasonable to begin with. This is a low key, spartan facility (e.g. very small pro shop, no real club house however there is a restaurant and lounge on the site). The golf course itself was in nice shape. It's not the most difficult course but if you play it from the back tees (which we did), their are several par fours over 400 yards. If you are not a golf course "snob" and enjoy playing new courses, give Raceway a try - it's not the greatest course but you should have a good time if you have the right expectations (and if the race track is open, it's pretty cool to see the cars while you're on the 18th tee).
Green at Tunxis Country Club
Played On 07/17/2015Good But Could Be Better
Tunxis is a good option for the mid-handicapper (e.g. 15). It might be a little too easy for the single digit handicapper even form the back tees.
Pros:
-Course is in good condition and pace of play was excellent.
Cons:
-It would be nice if they had "yardage to water hazard" signs on some of the holes where water is reachable from the tee. Also, all flags are the same color (instead of the traditional blue/white/red), making it difficult to know where the pin is located on the green.
Gillette Ridge
Played On 6/3/2013Play the correct tees!
I really like this course. Yes it's challenging, but if you play the apprpriate tees for your skill level (I'm a 10 handicap and play the white tees), you will have a great experience. I've heard complaints about the manicuring of the course. I think these are unwarrented except in two cases - the tee boxes could use a little work (even just picking up the broken tees) and the sand traps - which seem to be a problem at many non-private courses in the CT area. The greens are fine as are the fairways I will play this course again (and again).
Tower Ridge Country Club
Played On 11/12/2012Challenging, scenic course.
One of my favorite courses in the greater Hartford area which is unusual because I don't usually score all that well there. It has several challenging holes and is usually in good condition (although the sand traps could use a little work). Some people dont like the course because there are a few holes that you are likely to encounter side hill lies but if you know how to play them, that shouldn't present a problem. The greens are usually fast and can have severe breaks depending on the pin placement. Finally, they have some good meal deals in the restaurant/grill.
Thanks so much for your wonderful review, carr0509. We are thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed your time with us. Please visit again soon. Thanks for choosing Tallwood Country Club!
