Turtle Creek Golf Club
Played On 09/16/2017Difficult, but Fair
Turtle Creek is a challenging course. It is well laid out and you need to be on your game when you play here. The course has a number of dog-legs, blind t shots, plenty of forced carries, and holes with multiple water hazards. The greens tend to be true, but sometimes can be quite a bit faster than the practice green.
The course is family owned and is part of a golf complex. They keep it well maintained and things are quite organized. There is a large range, miniature golf, and a pitch and putt in addition to the main course. They have an outside concession with a grill and plenty of refreshments for a quick turn-around. It is located about 40+ mi. outside Philly but is worth driving an hour of more if in the area.
Iron Valley Golf Club
Played On 07/15/2017Top Shelf Course
Iron Valley is a well designed, challenging course. There are lots of water hazards, elevation changes, and every hole is different. This course will tax all of your shot skills and course management ability. Staff was friendly and, accommodating. Its one of the courses we really look forward to playing.
Spring Hollow Golf Course
Played On 07/04/2017Always a Pleasure to play here
Spring Hollow is a pleasure to play. It is well designed and features all sorts of elevation changes, blind T shots, and some water hazards. I find one of the more difficult aspects to be the rather long fescue bordering all of the fairways and greens. (be ready to hit irons and wedges from the grass) Well maintained. We play this course 5 to 6 times a year and it never disappoints. That said, it can get backed up from time to time. Also, there is no driving range, but for the past 2 years they have installed a cage where one can warm up with some full swings.
Highly recommend this course.
Bella Vista Golf Course
Played On 05/07/2017Top of my List
This is one of the nicest public courses in the SE PA region. We visit Bella Vista 3 to 4 times a year. The course is wide open and a pleasure to play. Always well maintained. The holes vary in length and in the particular challenges they present. One hole has an island green. Speaking of the greens, they keep them in very good shape. However many of them seem to break a lot less than they read. Overall, the course played very well on a wet rainy day last weekend. The only thing missing is a driving range or a place to warm up. Bring your A game.
Linfield National Golf Club
Played On 07/23/2016One of my Favorites
I like this course. It gives you a bit of everything. Water, elevation changes, narrow fairways, wide fairways, hidden hazards, etc. Unlike some other courses, you don't get that deja vu feeling on the second nine, "haven't we played this hole before". The only thing it might not have is really long distances. But overall, the course just has a great feel on a nice day.
My son and I play here about 6 times a year, fairly often in 90+ degrees, so the water stops are appreciated. They generally keep the course in really good shape and we always have a fun round in all respects. The staff has been friendly, remember us -sometimes, and ask how it went when we get in.
I definitely recommend this course. It would be one that beginners would appreciate too (from the red tees). One very good improvement would be some sort of warm-up provision -even if just a driving cage outside somewhere to get in a few swings.
Pickering Valley Golf Club
Played On 06/28/2015Nice Course for All (except maybe Beginners)
My son and I have played this course about 4 times in 2014 and 3 times this season so far. It features all kinds of hazards, forced carries, and changes in elevations that make you bring your "A" game. There are some long uphill holes and long downhill holes. Many are wide open, others can be somewhat narrow. One dogleg par-5 has 2 forced carries over water. The greens are good, some fast, some slow depending on conditions. Plenty of scenic vistas of Chester County, PA everywhere.
If you choose the correct tee box, this course will properly challenge golfers of almost any ability. We played PV the day after a serious line of storms had dropped heavy rainfall in the area. Nevertheless, PV was in really decent shape. They said it was the only course letting people out in carts that day -so it was more crowded than usual.
My only suggestion is that management (PV is family owned) install online Tee times.
