La Cantera Resort - The Palmer Course
Played On 09/08/2014Very nice round, much enjoyed
From the moment you get to the bag drop you are treated in a member-like atmosphere. Super friendly staff, answering all questions and willing to go the extra mile to make it enjoyable. Practice facilities were also very nice with unlimited range balls to warm up with (looked sparkling new, not beat up) and a decent putting/bunker area. The layout is very nice as well with a good mix of elevation changes both high-low and low-high mixed with 'flat' holes. Fairways are pretty generous and there was minimal punishment for shots in the rough (might be typical for the area?). Missing it all would nearly always lead to a drop as this is surrounded by desert terrain. Course is all lateral hazard, no OB. Greens had minimal damage except for 1-2 areas where they were repairing but it was negligible to the overall experience and would seldom impact play with the pin locations on the day. Views are spectacular and allowing the rock formations to integrate into the course was a great choice. The only complaint was some of the tee boxes were in really, really rough shape but that wasn't consistent throughout the course and were primarily located on the 3's (understandable). Overall I give this 4.7 stars and would absolutely play again given the opportunity to play at the $40ish rate I got. Review might be a little more harsh if I paid the full $125 fee. Enjoy!!
George Wright Golf Course
Played On 08/06/2014Best in Metro Boston Area, No Question
I've been playing GW for 3 years now and they continue to improve the course every year. From the long time locals, this apparently used to be a terribly managed and run down course but many tee boxes and fairways have been re-built extremely well. Overall, this course is the best in the Boston area. It isn't very long but the layout, blind greens, and penalty for missing fairways makes it quite difficult from the tips, with a playing advantage favoring a left -> right shot shape. I'm right handed and draw the ball so that makes the course more difficult for me, personally. Greens role very nicely, aren't trashed like other public course, and many of the bunkers have been re-sanded (few exceptions but they are in the works). Highly recommend the course if you are in the area and its not even a question between GW and the other public courses within 45 min of Boston. Only downfall is that on weekends you can expect 5 hour rounds.. Enjoy!
Pine Barrens at World Woods Golf Club
Played On 04/23/2014Excellent Course! Must play
This was such a great course to basically stumble on thanks to golfnow. The course layout is one of the finest I have played and the conditions were above expectations. Great for all levels with varrying tee lengths. So many diffrenet ways to play multiple holes. Can't say enough about this place.. must play. Only downfall for those reading this close to date of play (4/23/14) - They just fertilized the greens which caused putts to jump, just a touch at times. By no means should that discourage you, go play and you won't regret it. Each hole offers a unique landscape, greens are tough (but fair), and fairways were very clean and well kept. Well done!
Shaker Hills Country Club
Played On 10/14/2013Extraordinary layout with prestigious feel
Layout is great and well cut playing right into the landscape. Grass was well manicured at each level and the fairways well taken care of. Greens were tough too in a good way. Multi level, saw a lot of missed breaking putts but the ball rolled very nicely. Unfortunately the nature of the greens seemed to allow for the traffic around the hole to take it's toll but we played after 12. Practice facilities are also fantastic offering an entire par 3 hole to practice on. Only complaint: around numerous holes there were some random sections of grass that were clearly repairs done right on the fringe. The grass was vastly different in type but more importantly length. It was like putting through the rough? I had to chip it.. Anyway It might have gone unnoticed but it came into play twice for me when I just missed those greens and wanted to putt. To see the continuity of the fairways end where it mattered most was kinda disappointing. Overall definitely recommended and worth the drive from the city. Had I known, I would have came a couple hours early to warm up!
