If you are an average golfer, stay away.

We booked a weekend trip to the Lexington/Richmond KY area for a "guys" weekend getaway. Boone's Trace was one of the courses in the package from mygolfvacation.com. This was the last course we played on the weekend. The area had a lot of rain a few days before we arrived. We played 2 other courses the previous two days. For the amount of rain, the other courses did a great job. Boone's Trace; the rough was impossible to hit out of. In some areas the rough is up to your shins. We had some of our guys just quit playing because they got tired of losing balls within 5 yards of the fairway. I know, I know; "you're supposed to keep the ball in the fairway". That's great, but if you want this course to be fun for all players, you have to do something about the rough. IT SLOWS PLAY DOWN. The course layout itself is fairly tough. A lot of blind holes. Your first time out, you should play with someone who has played the course before. They give you a book, it helps somewhat, but if you're scrambling, it's no help at all. The gentleman in the clubhouse was very nice. A hot dog was $5.30 and not very impressive. The clubhouse guy was very polite and said it's a good hot dog (for $5.30). It's a hot dog. LOL. Cheeseburger for $5.30? Pull Pork Sandwich for $5.30? Yeah. But an average sized hot dog for $5.30? If you are looking for the Country Club vibe, this is your course. The general attitude here is that this is a "members-only" course. There are houses on every single hole, but they are not within play. Great job on the developer. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were in decent shape. There is no intermediate rough. If you are off the fairway, good luck finding your ball (even 12 inches off the fairway). If you hit in the 20s, do not play here.

Windy, but fun

We booked a weekend trip to the Lexington/Richmond KY area for a "guys" weekend getaway. Kearney Hill was one of the courses in the package from mygolfvacation.com. They tell you on the website that is windy. It is. It's not too windy, but enough to consider clubbing up or down depending on the wind direction. The front nine is is tight and you may hear "fore" a few times. The back nine is more wide open. This is my first time playing a links-style course. I loved it. The bunkers were well kept. The greens are... well Pete Dye Rollercoaster Central. They're still fun to put on. If you walk away with a two-putt from 15 feet out, consider yourself good. The rough was easy to hit out of considering the amount of rain the area had before we got there. The staff was great and the carts were newer. We will be back!

I'll be back

We booked a weekend trip to the Lexington/Richmond KY area for a "guys" weekend getaway. Gibson Bay was one of the courses in the package from mygolfvacation.com. The course was under repair in the middle and the course was really wet in spots due to a lot of rain a few days before we arrived. For the poor conditions, the course was amazing. The grounds staff should be commended, BIG TIME. The course layout is fun and you don't have to worry too much about hitting into other people if you hit a stray shot. The clubhouse staff was incredibly nice and the snack staff was very nice too. The food is your standard fare and beer prices are normal. Very fair pricing. We will definitely be back!

Well Worth the Drive

We played this course as part of a Cincysavers coupon. It was one of 6 courses we pre-paid for. I can see why Colonial Pines was a part of this program; it is well worth the drive.

It's only 25 minutes off 275 and if you go through New Richmond it's a really nice ride. The staff was beyond nice. The carts are on the older side, I had to double-up the strap to hold my bag.

The bad: the fairways are dry. They haven't had rain in awhile, so the fairways are pretty bare. The good news is that you can hit a 5 iron 300 yards on them.

The good: The tee boxes and greens are in great shape. Each 9 is completely different. The front 9 is links style with a lot of water. The back 9 rolls through hills with a lot of blind shots. Not much water. There are NO HOMES on the course. Love that beyond measure. It is very very quiet and relaxing. Concrete cart paths. If you hit it long, you can drive some of the greens. However, if you drive it past the green, any of the greens, you're going to be in trouble. The other 2 guys I played with used their driver quite a bit. I used mine once. We all hit 90, which is pretty weird by itself. I know the next time we play it, we can knock off at least 5 strokes. We just didn't know the course (get the course book in the clubhouse - it helped a lot).

This would be a great place for a destination trip if they had a place to stay close to the course. I could easily see myself playing 36 a day on this course. Great, fun layout and every hole is different.

If the fairways were in better shape, I would have given this 5 stars. We will definitely include this in our once a month visits. Could be every other week if the fairways come back. Walkers; perfect for front 9 - back 9 not for walkers.

Again, loved the course and the staff were incredibly nice and helpful.

Always a Challenge When Putting on Verified Greens

It was nice that via GolfNow, you could see that the greens have been recently aerified. We knew what we were getting into. It looked like they JUST aerified them the day before or that morning. The only issue was that the holes weren't quite filled in throughout and some areas still had a lot of sand on the surface. Hmmm.... what's it like putting through a bunker? Now I know. I 4-putted from 12 feet out. But, we knew that going in. The price was good.

The rest of the course was in great shape as usual. The pace was great on the front, but on the back, I think the guys in front of us were starting to get drunk and were hitting the ball all over the place. One guy left his putter 3 holes back. LOL.

So, it is what it is. Tis the season of aerification, don't pay full price.

Be good...be very good

I hit in the low 90s. My friends hit in the low 90s. If you hit above 85, you shouldn't be playing the Grizzly.

The good stuff.. the course is immaculate. From tee to green it was in fantastic shape for the amount of rain we received the night before.

The bad stuff... there are houses and condos EVERYWHERE. Who lives in a house 200 yards from a tee box? How can you enjoy your million dollar home KNOWING you could be hit at any time. I usually hit my driver well with maybe 1 or 2 drives missing the fairway. I switched to a hybrid off the tee which made for a long day on this course. Did I say there were houses everywhere? If you play the North course, it's a lot more forgiving with the real estate.

The staff was really, really nice. Super nice. We had a group of three and they put a single with us. No problem. He was a nice guy who said he hit in the low 80s, but was probably playing poorly because he was playing us. Sorry about that. OTHER players on the course... pompous is a good word to use. We had three guys playing behind us that kept hitting into us. At one point they hit a ball 8 feet from me on a fly. No FORE... nothing. I turned around and yelled FORE! I got the "get off my course" motion. The funny thing is there was a Par 3 on the next hole and we had decided to let them play through. Until then.

Two valuable lessons I learned... until I hit in the 70s, don't play any courses with houses lining every hole. And, for all golfers... if you want golf to endure, grow and prosper, don't act like a pompous elitist to other golfers.

If you don't hit in the 70s or low 80s, don't play this course. It's not for you.

Awesome Course

I haven't played Weatherwax in awhile. It's great to meet a friend there on Monday. He lives in Dayton and I live in Cincinnati, so it was a great place to meet half way.

It is well worth the drive. The course is in great condition except for the greens. Maybe it's the time of year or nobody repairs their ball marks, but the greens are in very poor condition. I laughed on a 4 foot putt once where I hit 3 ball marks and missed by a foot on a putt where normally I sink it or at least with inches. I'm not a greenskeeper, but wow, the greens are bad.

On to the good... the course is so well laid out with a few holes that are WOW...great view. We played behind a fivesome all day. They were all really good, so it was no problem. The pace of play was great. We had a solid 10 minutes to play each hole. It has a great mix of Pars. You get frustrated on a par 5 and the next hole is a nice easy par 3. Thank you.

The clubhouse is really nice. It's a really old course and they keep it very nice. The staff was more than pleasant and the food was great.

We will meet up again. I'm just assuming that the greens will get fixed or maybe they had a ton of rounds this weekend and nobody fixed their ball marks. If not for the greens, I would have given it 5 stars.

Oh, a small note. The signage is awesome. The markers are all accurate and the directional signs are well placed.

Well worth the drive!!!

We wanted to play something new. We always play around greater Cincinnati and a lot in Northern Kentucky. Lawrenceburg is about 40 minutes from where I live.

My friend booked the tee time through GolfNow (always out mode of operation) and the price was very fair.

The short version... whoever designed this course and community is a genius. There are homes scattered around, BUT they are properly placed and far enough from the holes. Who builds a house within 20 yards of a green? Stupid. Not Sugar Ridge. WELL DONE.

The drive is really not that bad. It's within 10 minutes of the Lawrenceburg exit. The clubhouse area is really cool. They have an outside bar that we would have hanged at afterwards but since it was a holiday weekend I guess, it wasn't open. The staff was really nice and very friendly.

The practice area is not much to speak of, but it's a practice area. Who cares.

On to the course... There is a considerable drive between holes, but the signage is smart and easy to follow. The cart driving reminded me of Devou Park. Oh yeah, our cart had issues. We should have traded at the turn. Backfired almost every hole. That's on us.

My favorite is the course conditions. Whoever is in charge of maintenance... give them a raise! The tee boxes were a little worn out, but we played in the afternoon, so all the morning people hacked them up good. These are without a doubt the best fairways I have EVER played. If you keep it in the fairway you could almost use your driver again on the par 5s. They are that pristine. The greens are small compared to other courses, but they are immaculate. No ball marks to speak of and the marks that were there, people fixed them. It is not an easy course to play if you hit the ball everywhere. The rough is rough (like it should be). You will hit in patches of dirt. Keep it within 40 yards of the fairway and you'll be fine.

The layout... also well done. This was my first time playing the course, so I over drove some of the holes where you couldn't see the green from the tee box. The proximity to other holes is well done. You will hardly ever get hit into or hit into another group. Ladies will love this course too. The ladies tee box is very, very forgiving. There is a great mix of pars each with their own challenges.

I played bad. Mainly because I didn't know the course at all and I'm still getting my licks in on my new sticks. Figuring things out. BUT, I had a blast playing this course. I can't wait to go back.

Oh, it's close enough to the casino where it would be a great weekend for couples to play golf during the day and hit the casino at night.

Where am I?

First of all, I played bad. I had 2 blowup holes. My fault.

The good stuff...The fairways are in fantastic shape. The first cut off the fairways are easy to hit off of. The cart was nice. The clubhouse looks like a place I would hangout out at after a round.

The bad,,,Hole 5 just needs to be blown up. There is no green. It's a flag in the middle of the fairway. Sprayed orange sign says "Max 2 putt". OK, thanks. Supposedly it's been this way for a long time. Almost all of the greens except 9 and 18 are awful. I don't know if it's people aren't fixing their ball marks properly or they're just not rolling the greens right. Your ball is going to pop all over the place when you putt. Get used to it. A few of the greens are badly diseased.

My number 1 issue is the course layout and signage. Tee 1 and 10 share a tee box. There is no signage that says which is which. Oh, I forgot, NONE of the tee box markers were in place. They were piled off to the side. Which direction do I go? The signage is awful. On 2 tee box, we were told we were on 9. Hole 7... hmmm... took us almost 10 minutes to figure out where 7 tee WAS and in what direction to hit. Again, NO tee box markers were in place to help with direction. Also on 7 tee, the sign is on the ladies tee box. ???? We just started going the detective route used the cart path to try and figure out where we're supposed to go. 17 tee is about 2 holes over from 16 green. If I guy hadn't been on (I think) 12 tee we would have never found it. The course is really tight and because of the bad signage, I hit on the wrong fairway twice. Fore!

Spend $500 on some signs or at least spray some arrows on the cart paths!!! We could have played 30 minutes faster if there was some smart signage. Suggestion, take someone out that has never been to the course and figure out where they are getting lost.... sign needed there!

For $20 it was worth the trip. But bring a GPS on your phone or range finder to help. Will I be back? I don't think so.

We're coming back...

We were looking to play somewhere new. Eagle Creek was at the limit of where we would drive for a day. About 30 minutes from Cincinnati. It was a great deal on GolfNow so it was a win-win...new course (for us) and great price.

For a private country club, the clubhouse was a lot to be desired, BUT we were there to play golf, not socialize. It rained buckets the night before so it was cart path only. The greens were fast for a lot of rain. The fairways and even the rough were my favorite. I don't know what the grass was in the rough areas, but it was easy to hit out of...thank you! The fairways had enough height to feel "tee'd up".

OK, the par 3s...easily some of the hardest we've ever played. Almost all of them are LONG. They are fun, but tough. The shortest par 3 conveniently had a tree in your way, almost forcing you to hit right to left to hit the pin.

It was an overcast day, but the course is beautiful. A lot of trees placed out of your way, but blocking other holes from hitting into you. There are a few blind spots where you have to be careful not to hit into the people in front of you. Leave your cart where the people behind you can see it please.

The staff was really, really friendly. Super nice guys.

A few suggestions and keep this in mind when you are there.. - they need some better signage. Some of the holes are difficult to find. Especially 10 which is through the parking lot and behind the cart barn and 18 tee. The drive from 17 to 18 is not LONG and there is no signage. Two groups of golfers had to point us in the direction of 18 tee. Could have easily been solved by "18" with an arrow on the cart path. You will not find it unless someone tells you where it is.

- Water. Buy at least two drinks at the clubhouse. The water locations are in poor spots. Why do you put a water station on 10? The first one is on 3. NO water after that. These are minor issues.

Overall we were thrilled with the course. The staff is super nice. The people playing there are nice. The pace of play was good. And the course maintenance staff obviously does an incredible job!!!

Don't book a tee time after 5 on Wednesdays

You know you are going to tee off after leagues get going. It's a given. Our tee time was set for 6:20. We tee'd off at 7:15.

The league on this night is incredibly SLOW. Slowest I've ever seen.

Starter was nice and let us tee off on 18, then go to 10. We finished 18 in about 20 minutes. Only because the group in front of took 15 minutes to play the hole!

Got to 10 and it was backed up 8 carts deep. So we went to 1 where we tee'd off in about 5 minutes. By the time we got to 2, we were waiting again. 3 was so backed up, we played 2 again. We only played 6 holes, but we played 5 of those twice because the league was so backed up.

I really like Hickory, but I'll never book a tee time after this league.

Hidden Gem (from me at least)

I've been playing for over 15 years. I played in a golf outing here last year and fell in love with the course. I've since played it 10 times.

I'll be playing it at least once a week this season. The staff couldn't be nicer and they are always happy. The metts and dogs are oversized and the beer is always cold.

The course: On this day, it was a real challenge. Every course is so wet right now that you are on cart paths only. If you don't stay on the fairways, you are in for a long round and you WILL lose some balls from getting plugged. The greens are nice and fast though.

A few of my favorite things about the course; you are rarely battling players on other holes. You never have anyone hitting into you from another hole. When the course is dry, there is no better course around. It's challenging without being too frustrating. Whoever the greenskeeper is deserves a gold star (or a few beers).

You will not see much residential development. I LOVE IT. I could sit at the tee box at 18 forever. What a view. That being said, stay after for at least one beer to sit on the deck. The view is crazy beautiful.

I wish I would have found AJ Jolly many years ago. It's a bit of a haul to get there, but it is well worth it!!! My new favorite course.
