Wild Rock Golf Club - Wild Rock Championship Course
Played On 07/18/2014one of my favorites...
The best course in the Dells area, taking nothing away from others but Wild Rock is 2nd to none. Great vistas, elevation changes, use of terain, and conditions. Tight lie fairways...take some gettin'-used-to maybe the 1st few holes, and fun chalenging greens. Generous fairways for the most part but some target tee shots also mixed in.
Decent value occaisionly on golf now but otherwise way too costly. I'm a local and rarely play here in peak season due to that. Being a big tourist and destination golf area, many courses, while offering a local rate, are still over priced and sit pretty empty on many occaisions...especially so on hot weather afternoons.
The only other complaint I have doesn't concern the course or the staff, which are both great, but some players. Being a destination course, there were many unrepaired ball marks and divots, and we had to wait too long on almost every shot for the group in front of us...4 young guys...with our foursome being three 50 - 60 fellas, and 1 of the gents wife. We also put out a couple of lit cigaretts on tees and picked up a few empty beer cans on some greens.
All that said, the course is great and a must play if you can get it here, or are willing to pony up some serious cash.
Oaks Golf Course at Christmas Mountain Village

I play this course several times a year and never tire of it. Not overly long...fine with me at 61 years...but 4 sets of tees let you pick yer poison. Back nine looks easy, but plays tough...target golf!!! Scenic layout...elevation changes...some water...LOTS of trees. My only knocks are: tourists (resort golf) don't do a good job on greens...many unrepaired ball marks, and greens keeper won't mow fairways to the greens...20+/- yards rough tween fairway and green. That's the number 1 gripe I hear from locals and members
Portage Country Club

Not far from my house, but I've only played here a couple times. Should hit this one more often but I'm amongst an embaressment of riches in regard to top notch golf within an hour of my home in any direction. This is hands down the best value in south-central Wisconsin! Smallish, "old time" greens were a tad bumpy, fast, and very undulated....tough but fun....with some "sunday" pin placements. Fairways were ok...not specracular, but good. Rough was a bit long requiring some lengthy ball searches....a frequent phenomenum 'round here the last few years....high fuel costs? The layout is very diversified from tree-lined to links style, lot of dog legs, some total blind shots, and some narrow, challenging approaches.....plan on hitting every stick in the bag. The staff is friendly and helpful. The only downer we experienced (a threesome) was a VERY unskilled foresome holding us up the first 6 holes not letting us play thru. We looped back 3 holes....nobody behind us....and caught them on 15...oh well. I'll hit this one more often this summer, we had a great timr
Trout Lake Golf Club

I get up north every summer and this is a must play. Old course, 90 plus years, great conditions and greens. Great layout with a lot of diversity thrughout the round. Midwest friendly staff with a rustic pro shop and gravel driveway/parking lot hiding a wonderfully fun round of golf. If you get up north, don't pass this one by.
