Quail Ridge Golf Club
Played On 03/19/2017EARLY Spring Conditions Not too shabby
The course was packed for one day before spring. Called to make a tee time and was told didn't need one since I was solo, but found out that it would have been neccessary as I had to chase many foursomes.
The course was a little wet, which is understandable for the given time of the year. Fairways were WIDE and very forgiving with Generous landing areas off the tee. The greens were smooth and rolled true. The one feature I'd like to see in the prime season is the sod-faced bunkers that are scattered throughout. A very nice touch.
Overall a good value and a solid layout that covers a good amount of acreage. I'll definitely return to play in the summer, but not when its so busy.
Willow Wood Golf Club
Played On 02/23/2017Great Course, GREATER Value
Located about 30 minutes from Lansing, you won't find a better course for the price. $20 spring and Fall rates, $30 Peak Rate. This course will challenge your shot making and is not a "grip it & rip it" style. Always well manicured with challenging greens and a great chance to score well. Definitely a Feel-Good course.
6 Stars for the Friendliness of Staff. They do an excellent job of leaving you with a feeling of wanting to return again and again. Keep up the good work.
College Fields Golf Club
Played On 02/22/2017A CHALLENGING Track For All
The FRONT 9 is wide open Links with slightly, yet severely elevated greens. Lush fairways throughtout the entire track. Greens always roll True and fairly quick. Good chance to use Driver.
The BACK 9 gets a bit more enclosed once getting to hole 11. Then its shot placement and less forgiveness off the tee, with some very aesthetically pleasing golf holes. Hole 13 is my favorite. But nonetheless, entire course is well groomed and it looks GREAT!!!
They usually offer an early season discount pass, with Black Friday deals.
Pay attention to Pin Placement for the day as many greens have significant slope.
Full Bar, outside and inside.
The Cedar River at Shanty Creek
Played On 10/11/2016Cedar River is a MUST PLAY
Played C.R. as a replay to The Legend, which I had played earlier that morning. I didn't think this course would top the Legend, but I was wrong. Although I enjoyed the layout better at Legend, I was no disappointed at CR.
Every hole is cut from the deep forests of Northern Michigan. WIDE Fairways, and tough green complexes. Some raised, but all guarded by huge bunkers. Some forced carries off the tee, but overall very playable and I still can't get over how well it was maintained for mid October.
Great value - played 36 holes for $85 that day and can't wait to return. I was thrilled to shoot in the 70s on both courses as I was challenged immensely. Shanty creek - You're doing alot of things right up there!!!
The Legend at Shanty Creek
Played On 10/11/2016Northern Michigan at its Finest
My first round at the Legend was an enjoyable one. I was absolutely astounded at the elevation changes and overall course conditions - pristine and manicured perfectly. Given the month of October, there was nobody else on the entire course. Fairly wide fairways and challenging, yet extremely playable greens. This is in my Top 3 favorite Michigan courses, and I've played many.
The Natural at Beaver Creek Resort
Played On 10/10/2016The Name Says it All.
The Natural is exactly what you get...Natural beauty. Not too much earth moving to sculpt this gem in Northern Michigan. Gently rolling hills, with occasional dramatic change. Holes cut out of woods, with tight fairways and large greens. Not terribly long, but quite the challenge.
Played mid October for 40.00 on a monday, well worth it. Had the entire course to myself. A little disappointed with the Fall leaves cleanup, but nontheless had a great time. Brand New asphalt cartpaths adds a MAJOR facelift to once detereorating gravel paths. A shotmakers course. Bring your A-Game
The Schuss Mountain at Shanty Creek
Played On 05/16/2016OFF-Season play was perfect
Nothing fancy here, you get what you see. The front 9 moves along the gently rolling terrain with no real significant elevation changes. Alot of doglegs, nestled between the Michigan hardwoods and pines.
The Back 9 really speeds up with a short par 4 and then much more seclusion to follow with scenic lookouts and drastic elevation change. For the month of May conditions were excellent. Fairways were mighty green and the greens were luscious, as if it were July. If you want a more challenging layout, head over to The Legend or Cedar River, but this course will definitely make you feel good.
The Emerald Golf Course
Played On 09/15/2015FAST Greens, Great conditions
Love this layout. Most holes are straight back and forth although some dramatic elevation changes and good variety of short and long distances. LOVE the greens, they always roll true, but are some of the FASTEST around!!! Decent prices and very good food at the turn.
Grandview Golf Club
Played On 08/08/2015A Diamond in the Rough
I frequently play this course as it's close to our summer vacationing spot in Kalkaska. It is definitely a TRUE Gem. What makes it a challenge is its location - off of a dirt road and away from the heavily populated areas (Traverse City & Gaylord)
Pros - Fairways are always plush and the greens are gorgeous and roll true everytime. I love this layout. Many elevation changes, elevated tee boxes, some holes open, some guarded by lush Michigan forests. Truly an up north feel. The value isnt bad either - $35 for twilight summer rate.
Cons - Relatively outdated Carts.
- The older gentleman working the counter has always come off as being rude. Almost as if he's doing you a favor by letting you play.
If you want to play a serene course with plenty of challenges and picturesque views, come here!
Lakemont at Stone Mountain Golf Course
Played On 07/13/2015First Time & it was Excellent!!!
Spent many times at Stone Mountain, GA visiting my relatives and always wanted to play this course.
For $50 I chose to play the Lakemont course, one of the two at Stone Mt, the other called Stonemont. The course staffmember suggested this as being more scenic and secluded. AWESOME views of the mountain on many holes, the greens were superb, and the fairways were in great condition. Long cart rides between holes made it extra interesting as you didnt know what to expect.
Front 9 played with more trees, and the back 9 was more like a country club, holes meandering back and forth.
Biggest turn off for me was the almost 90 degrees, which is normal for July, and first couple holes were littered with geese droppings, fairways and greens.
Would really like to check out Stonemont the next time I visit.
PohlCat Golf Course
Played On 07/04/2015Northern Michigan layout, centrally located
For me, this course is a once or twice a year thing, as the rates are a bit pricey for me, although 60-70 bucks not bad for some people.
The layout is gorgeous. Some of the challenges that awaits are wooded holes and some of the open variety. Absolutely love #2 over the Chippewa River as well as #17. Paid $55 on July 4th which was great value.
The fairways are wide and forgiving for the most part and the greens roll TRUE everytime. Alot of acreage is covered by this layout and I will always try to play here at least once a year.
The Valley at Wilderness Valley Golf Resort
Played On 06/22/2015Crispy dry greens, conditions
Played here in June, when it had rained significantly in the days/weeks leading up. The greens were brown and hard as a rock. That was the biggest turn-off. Fairways were fair conditons, some areas patchy, and the tee boxes were the same.
This was once a beautiful setting with some forests, plush greens that were moderately challenging, and a layout with minimal elevation changes and gently rolling hills. If conditions were restored to my better memories of the place, I would definitely return again.
The Black Forest at Wilderness Valley Golf Resort
Played On 06/22/2015What was once a Gem is Not anymore
Typically try to play here once a year as the conditions are almost always pristine and well maintained. NOT this year. When I pulled up to the Bag Drop, the attendant asked me if I had played here recently, which I hadn't in rougly 5 years and he said the course had some trouble with snow mold the previous season.
I purchased an Unlimited Play pass from Groupon for $49.00 so I didnt feel too bad compared to the $75 rack rate.
Needless to say, the tee boxes were shameful. Bare spots everywhere, thin grass where the was any. The sandbunkers, which usually are pristine, had weeds growing and/or were hardpacked. Greens were the worst I've ever seen, Big bare patches everywhere.
I'll be extremely surprised if this course stays open much longer due to these poor conditions. Also, Wilderness Valley, the sister course on site, those greens were atrocious, dry, and brown. Almost as if it were August and in a drought.
Thank you for your feedback and continued patronage. We had a rough 2015, with early ice damage basically taking the year to repair. Our end-of-season saw special care with formulas and treatments that will guarantee a better-looking 2016 season, we hope you will visit again.
Eagle Eye Golf Club
Played On 09/21/2014Eagle eye Best of the best
This course is one tough track, but the overall beauty and attention to detail is unbelievable. Barely any trees, Alot of water and sand, and some amazing golf course views await you! For just over 50 bucks, you can enjoy one of the best courses in Michigan.
Nice enough course but they have to work on they're watering of it. No rain for the last to weeks and there is standing water everywhere. If u leave your approach shot short it either comes back a foot or plugs. And when u go out to hit your shot there is a good chance your gonna sink in too. Too bad could be really nice. STOP WATERING.
