Tour 18 Houston
Played On 03/23/2023Will Need Work Now Through The Growing Season
Course conditions were OK, greens were good speed, did not hold (hard to find ball marks). Nutgrass/poana (sp) growing around some of the green fringes, very tight for chipping (winter), tee boxes need work many are uneven and slanting - alot of work should be done this Spring. Greens fees are higher than most in the area, except for GC of Houston. Staff is friendly. Drink and food prices are high, no water on the course, in Houston's hot weather that is not smart (no longer can covid be blamed). I play there somewhat regularly but this is the first review in a while, because the course conditions have been better, work needs to be done to this spring.
Stonebridge at Newport
Played On 09/28/2022Most Greens Horrible
Overall rating is poor because of the greens. It was about a year ago I last played the course. There were greens that had some nutsedge/weeds in the greens but they rolled pretty good. Currenly, the greens especially on the front nine were the worst I have played in many years, the back nine greens are only slightly better - they appeared to be aerated and not rolled (a friend that played a month ago said they were the same, so not recently aerated). Very bumpy and did not roll true at all, some tee boxes were weeds and dirt others were OK. Fringe around some of the greens were crabgrass and other weeds. I was very disappointed, I really like the layout and the course had been in good shape last year. The sand traps are really good, fairways are fair/good, rough has a lot of weeds. Staff is really nice, pace of play was excellent and the price is very good WHEN the course is in good shape. I don't recommend the course until the greens improve (I don't understand why they were not rolled)
The Fortress Golf Course
Played On 06/24/2020Best Conditioned Course in the Area
I play in a league at the Fortress. It is as well conditioned as any course in MI, it is a little bit pricey but not when compared to other great courses like Arcadia Bluffs. It favors a straight and long driver. The heather is tough and the greens are very fast. It is a beautiful course. The staff is friendly and there are many places for excellent food in Frankenmuth.
Lapeer Country Club
Played On 06/15/2020Great Course - Good for Old Guys Like Me
The condition of the course was excellent, greens are undulating and fast. Not long but a good layout. Food is also great. Monday fees for seniors are the best in the area for such a well conditioned course
Atascocita Golf Club - Point/Shores Course
Played On 12/26/2019The Course has Improved
The course was in good shape. The greens have been completely redone and are very good. We played the Pinehurst and the Point. All the tee boxes were torn up and the fairways tight lies (as is expected at this time of year). The pace of play seemed extremely slow, but that probably was not normal (day after Christmas), the courses were packed and bad golf was on display (including my own). I plan on playing here again and would recommend this course.
Panorama Golf Club - Rolling Hills Course
Played On 11/17/2017Better than Before
Played Winged Foot/Thunderbird 9s. Had not played Panorama for 2 years due to poor greens. I was totally shocked - the greens all have grass, no bare spots and are really fast - an unbelievable difference. The fairways and roughs still need work. If you play the ball down everywhere, you will probably not like the conditions of the course. Fortunately for me and my playing partners, we are all old farts and play to have fun, so we roll the ball. It may not adhere to the rules of golf, but it is much more fun.
Vassar Golf & Country Club
Played On 05/11/2017Good Course, Decent Layout for the Price
The course was in pretty good shape considering the wet Spring. Greens were in good shape and decent speed. Most of the cups were slightly crowned, meaning not flat - this could be easily remedied if the greens keeper would utilize a plate designed to flatten the hole after it has been cut. This is common in the area, I don't know if it is laziness or lack of training. Overall, the round was enjoyable, the food is great people are friendly. There were 3 of us and we played in 3.5 hours. Definitely will play again. I rated it a 4, based on the condition of the course for the rate, don't expect a tour quality course for $27.
Verona Hills Golf Course
Played On 06/24/2016A Hidden Gem in the Thumb
Verona Hills is a great golf course. Our group was surprised by the hilliness of the course. The course was in great shape, the greens were fast, and the sand traps were OK (we had been warned they were not in good shape). There are a lot of doglegs, creating blind tee shots but the hole markers and card show the hole, so it wasn't a problem. Some of the greens are two tiered and somewhat undulating, so it does challenge your putting. The staff was friendly. Overall, we had a great experience, I only wish it was closer - it was a 90 minute drive for us. I highly recommend this course.

Played On 09/08/2015Tour 18 Is In Great Shape
The course is in great shape. The greens were fast, no problems with the fairways and tee boxes. The pace of play was better than normal (just under 4 hours). The staff was friendly. When I am in the area, I try to play Tour 18 once every 2 weeks.
Biloxi/Charleston at River Plantation Country Club
Played On 09/03/2015Course Is In Great Shape
I have played RP a number of times. It is in the best shape that I have seen it. The greens were fast, fairways had good grass, the tee boxes were in good shape. The only area needing some work were the sand traps - they had not been raked and some had thick sand others had little sand then hard pan. The staff was excellent and friendly. Improvements in the staff and course conditions were very noticeable. There were 2 of us and we played in 2.5 hours on a Thursday - 2 groups let us play through with no delay - it was nice to play where golfers were willing to let a faster group play through. We had a hot deal so the price was excellent also.
West Fork Golf & Country Club
Played On 09/02/2015Best Shape That I Have Experienced at West Fork
I have played West Fork numerous times. It was in the best shape that I have seen it (since the current ownership took the course over there has been constant improvement over the past 2 years). No issues with the condition of the greens, fairways, tee boxes, or sand traps (the sand traps are in the best condition of any of the courses that I play in the Houston area). It is a challenging layout, the pace of play was very good for a weekday. I recommend the course.
Saginaw Valley Public Golf Course
Played On 07/21/2015Well worth the Price
The course was in good shape. The tees and fairways could have been mowed but it was a Tuesday. I would have given the course conditions 5 stars except for the sand traps they needed to be raked. The staff is friendly. No drink carts during the week, but there are water coolers on a few of the holes. Pace of play was good. If you live in the area, it is worth a GolfNow tee time.
Vassar Golf & Country Club
Played On 07/19/2015Worth the GolfNow Rate
The course was in good shape, except for the sand traps they need maintenance. Pace of play was outstanding our twosome finished in 2h40m. The greens, fairways, and rough were in good condition. 3 of the holes were redirected/changed this year to add a driving range and they should be marked better it was hard to know where to hit the drive. Overall, worth the money.
Biloxi/Charleston at River Plantation Country Club
Played On 10/06/2014In Great Shape
The condition of the courses was excellent. I have played RP a number of times. It was in the best condition in the past 18 months since I first played it. The greens were fast, the fairways mowed tight, the rough was tough, the tee boxes excellent. The only negative was the sand traps, they had not been raked for a while. We were a twosome and pace of play was good, would have been better, if the threesome of women had let us play through-they were not real slow. A big storm blew through and we had to quit after 14, we would have finished in 3 hours. Watch for a GolfNow deal and play it.
Tour 18 Houston
Played On 09/04/2014The Course is in Great Shape
The course is in great shape, one of the best conditioned in the area. The pace of play is still a little slow for a weekday (4.5 hours). Tee boxes, fairways, and greens are in great shape, the only area needing help were the sand traps, but the area has experienced some thunder storms w/ heavy rain recently. I always enjoy Tour 18 and workers are always working to keep the course in great shape.
Stonebridge at Newport
Played On 09/02/2014Course was in Terrible Shape
We played the Tuesday after Labor Day. The course was in terrible shape. The greens had not been touched (we played at 9 AM). Dew was heavy, worm droppings all over, and the greens had not been mowed in a few days - not only were they slow but the ball bounced all over the place and the holes hadn't been moved in days. The area had gotten rain on Sunday. The traps hadn't been raked in quite a while weeds were growing in them. They were mowing the rough and fairways when the greens needed it the most. Thankfully a storm blew in with lightning and we quickly quit after 4 holes, which we were going to do after nine because of the conditions. Even at a low price this was not worth it. I don't plan on playing it again.
Forest Dunes Golf Club
Played On 08/11/2014Fantastic Course In The Middle of Nowhere
Excellent course in excellent condition! Many sandy waste areas and the greens were really fast. The practice facilities are also excellent. If you have the chance, play the course. Depending on the tees you play it can offer a really good challenge. I plan to play it again next year when I go back to Michigan.
The Golf Club at Margaritaville Lake Resort, Lake Conroe
Played On 06/26/2014Really Good Course
This is the first time I have played this course since it was overhauled and changed from Del Lago to La Torretta. The course was in excellent shape, except the greens still had some winter damage. The greens were a little slow and bumpy, but the condition of the rest of the course was fantastic. We played the yellow (senior) tees at 6000+ yards because it was wet and the white (men's) tee were 6500+ yards and had 6 par 4s at 410-442 yards. Glad we did it played long with water in play on many holes. I plan to play the whites next time. We got a great deal on GolfNow and it was great. The only negative was no water on the course (in 90 degree weather there should be water available) and the prices of food and drinks were very high and the service was poor. I will certainly go back with a discount.
West Fork Golf & Country Club
Played On 06/24/2014Keeps on Improving
I have played West Fork many times. It has been a month since I last played and it is in the best shape it has ever been in. The tee boxes and fairways have improved dramatically and all but a few greens have recovered from the neglect of the previous owner. The layout is good and the course is fun to play - number 9 and 18 are really tough holes. I bought 3 rounds through a GolfNow deal and will be playing the other 2 soon. Due to all the rain, the sand traps were not in good shape, but the rest of the course was excellent.
Stonebridge at Newport
Played On 05/21/2014Significant Improvement
The last time I played Newport was late fall and the course was a disaster. I was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in the course conditions. A few greens still needed some help, there were bare patches but they had been fertilized and should improve. The greatest improvement was the fairways, very few bare patches. The greens were much faster than they looked. We paid $16 to play, for $16 don't expect perfect conditions. It is a fun course and a decent layout and is improving. I will play it again soon. We played in less than 3 hours. This would be an excellent course for beginners, who should roll the ball everywhere.
Thanks for the review and for recommending our course! We appreciate the feedback.
