Tight Lies

I have reviewed this course before. The course is an upscale venue with wonderful views and great desert landscaping. Each hole requires getting into the correct position as out of position usually means a very challenging shot to cover a hazard of some sort (water, desert, bunkering). The fairways were close cut the day I played making it difficult to get good contact—I like a little grass beneath to stand the ball up. I really enjoy the layout. The fairways are forgiving enough, but poor shot control off the tee will usually mean you’re playing from the desert.

Fills the Void

When course rates get into the 3-figure range, this Course provides a nice option at an affordable rate. The fairways are in good playable shape, and the greens are always challenging. The pin placement on hole 2 was impossible on my round, but had a lucky approach that settled at kick-in range. Others in the group had balls roll away with multiple attempts.

Painted Fairways, Challenging Greens

Though the fairways are adequately grown in, the course has opted to paint the fairways to keep them looking green. Regardless, the course plays well and the greens are well maintained. The greens were challenging to read and made the round interesting.

Sun City Course

Sun City was built as a retirement community in the 70s, catering to retirees looking for an escape from colder climates of the East and Midwest. The only problem is these communities are now 40-50 years older and have done very little to modernize or renovate. The same holds true for the golf courses. They were built in the age of Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicolas and are time capsules to that era. Retirees I suppose are still satisfied with these old-style courses, and that explains how they continue to survive. It would be nice to see some creative type figure out how to lift these courses out of the 70s and breathe new life into these venues. They could start by looking at how they converted the tired old Maryvale Muni into the modern and challenging Grand Canyon University course.

Good Layout, Ordinary Conditions

I find the layout reasonably challenging and that keeps me coming back. The conditions of the fairways and greens are just passable. Anything off the fairway is hardpan at best.

Aah The Holidays

It’s Xmas week. All the snowbirds are in town. 40 yard topped drives every other hole. Oh, well. In another 2 weeks pace of play will improve and I can complete a round of golf. Course was a bit underwhelming as the overseed was not a big success. Fairways and greens were spotty to say the least. Hopefully, winter rains will bring it around.

Thumbs Up

I was expecting far less and was surprised that it was an actual golf course in decent condition. The practice area looked adequate, although I did not take time to hit practice balls. The putting green was also adequate for getting a few practice putts to fall. The fairways were suitably grown in and lush from tee to green. The greens were also without any bald spots or burned out areas. The course is relatively flat, though there are some elevated greens. Though the greens on the front nine are relatively straightforward, those on the back nine have some character to them. I did not get to finish playing the 18th as there is a course rule requiring carts to be in by dusk. There were also above ground water pipes (12 inch lines)set up to temporarily move water from the pumping station on hole 3. If your shots are in the fairway, then they are not an issue. I will play the course again.

Maybe Parents Need to Take Beginner Golfers to Executive Courses

The course came in reasonably well with the overseed. Fairways and greens were in playable shape, but could have been a bit more lush. As the rye grass matures, maybe it will fill in. The course layout is always a fun challenge. Some holes present a challenging tee shot while others get demanding on the approach to the green.

The only issue with this outing was being behind two foursomes with young, beginner players. Even though they picked up bad shots and moved forward, there were more bad shots than those that moved the group forward. The result was a round that ran out of daylight. Parents need to assess the level of their young players and get them used to the game on a more suitable course like an executive course before venturing onto a championship course. A round of golf this time of year is not inexpensive and other players want to finish their rounds, not run out of daylight watching youngsters hack at golf balls.

Fair

The course checks all the basic boxes as a parkland-style course. It is an established Sun City course that ran as a country club of the traditional sort. It is at a transition point that may see it continue as a golf course or fall to the bulldozer and be developed for its real estate value.

Established Sun City Course

I have reviewed this course before. The course layout is suitable enough, but it has slid a bit into disrepair. Drinking fountains were missing and restrooms were a bit disheveled, showing their age. The fairways were grown out, but suffering invasion of other grasses and weeds other than strict Bermuda. The greens were the best part of the course, but even they had burn patches and were running slow. I suspect the cause of the latter was the approaching overseed season. I keep returning to the course so there is value to the rounds I play here.

Going To Overseed Next Week

The course is going to overseed next week and was scalped in large swaths around the course. The course was still grass from the border of the out-of-bounds to the other border. The usual tee-boxes were not open either as they were doing work to get them dressed for after overseed, hence, play was up-teed at several holes. Still enjoyed the round.

Great Layout, No Bunker Sand

This course is an anomaly. The course is a great layout, but the maintenance is sporadic. Winter conditions are usually pretty good, but they really let it go through the summer months. The bunkers were nothing but dirt so anything landing in a bunker was unplayable. The greens were patchy at times as well. Areas outside of the fairways are usually just hard pan. I have my own local rule playing here in the summer—lift and place on grass. :))

Great from Tee to Green

I haven't played this course in a few years, but I do not recall it being in this good of condition, especially this time of year. The course was letting the grass dry out as it is approaching overseed, so everything rolled farther. That said, the tee boxes were in excellent shape, the fairways were all grown out with no bare spots and the greens were all in great shape. The greens rolled slow as it appears the course was leaving them a bit furry--possibly due to the approaching overseed. The ownership is working hard to make the course a great venue.

Overall Good Conditions

CL is one of those established courses that would benefit from a renovation. It has that old Sun City feel. That said, the course was in good shape, tee to green. The greens were a bit slow and inconsistent from one to the next, but were intact and not experiencing bad patches anywhere. There are the narrow shoots that cause angst for the wayward driver and the wall hole that creates its unique ‘go-for-it’ or layup opportunities. A fun place to play.

Bunker Sadness

I have reviewed this course before. The layout keeps bringing me back; the conditions, however, can be ‘iffy’ at times. The fairway grass is usually good, and the greens are playable most times, but anything off the fairway gets sketchy. From hardpan to marginal grass is the usual. On this outing, the bunkers were virtually unplayable. Recent rains turned the bunkers into dirt. The groundskeepers clearly had not raked them for weeks. It is a pleasant/inexpensive place to play, nevertheless, so I’ll be back.

Union Hills

It’s a country club in retirement town U. S. A. Always has that ‘just maintained’ quality. I think the membership is more interested in the Friday night fish fry than keeping the track in top form. Nevertheless, it’s a decent layout and long enough for the big hitters.

3:45 Tee Time in February--Need I Say More?

Booked a late tee time just to chase the ball around. I have played this course before. It had a full slate of retired folks out (me included) on a Monday, so the pace of play was challenging. The course is in adequate shape, though the first hole fairway had been punched. Greens are adequate also. With the bunkering and the uphill approaches to some of the greens, it is a challenging layout for just about any golfer.

The course layout is decent, the course conditions are just so so. For the price this time of the year, I am not complaining, however.

Got Backed Up at Several Holes

The course is a decent track with a few challenging holes and the course conditions were reasonably good, with the greens a bit on the spotty side, but still seeming to roll well regardless. The pace of play was a problem, however, at a few holes. It took 3 hours to play the front nine, and if the group ahead of us had not quit after the first nine, it would have been another 3 hours on the back nine. We did get it done in about 5.25 hours.
