Bennett Valley Golf Course
Played On 06/06/2015Interesting course that's tight off the tee
First time playing on Saturday afternoon. Played blue tees which didn't seem long but you are in trouble if you don't hit it straight. Tight tree lined fairways on the front made for a challenging start. Back nine is more open but had longer par 4s. Greens were very smooth and fairly fast for a municipal course. Pace was reasonable for a weekend. I would definitely play again and make sure to warm up so tee shots would be straighter.
Royal Ka'anapali
Played On 08/26/2014Fast smooth greens and awesome views
We were on a short vacation to Maui and I had the chance to play here twice. The course is fair and has large undulating greens which are the biggest challenge. The signature 5th hole is long and plays into the wind and towards the ocean (and passing tourists who are only a few yards away). Water only comes into play on the 1st and last two holes. Finishing hole is a tough one with water protecting the green on the front and right side. The staff was very nice and since I played early, the round was at a fast pace. I would recommend playing early as the winds pick up in the pm.
Cinnabar Hills Golf Club - Lake/Canyon
Played On 9/14/2013Best public course in South Bay
I always enjoy playing here because of the conditions, the routing and the greens. The greens are some of the best in the area and always run true. Each of the nines is different and has holes that challenge your shotmaking. The one downside is the pace can sometimes be slow because there are holes that can eat a few golf balls if you aren't careful. Pace of play aside you will have a lot of fun on this course.
Mission Hills - Gary Player Course
Played On 4/18/2013Dye in the Desert
Good test for those that like Dye courses. Railroad ties, deep bunkers, water carries, shaped shots. All the things you love/hate about Pete Dye are present at this resort course affiliated with the Westin hotel. Service was great (they allowed us to go out ahead of a father and son who were learning the game) so we didn't get frustrated with the pace of play. Good greens with rolling mounds to maneuver if you're not in the right position. Lots of villas and buildings along the course so if you don't like being watched while teeing off then go somewhere else.
The Classic Club
Played On 4/16/2013Interesting course but tough when windy
My first visit to Palm Springs for golf and unfortunately we had 20-30 mph winds. This isn't the course to play when windy but I would definitely go back under calmer conditions. Good layout with a lot of variety and hazards placed strategically but not in unfair locations. Water is in play on 7 holes on the back and a lot of the front. They must have brought in several hundred pine trees and once these mature then the wind will be less of a factor. Greens were sanded but rolled well. Conditioning was typical for a Troon operation - manicured and immaculate. Give it a go if it isn't windy.
DeLaveaga Golf Course & Lodge
Played On 3/30/2013Tight layout. Decent greens.
We got a last minute deal and headed over the hill. This is a good test of your driving skill as there are some very tight tee shots needed on some holes. You also need to be on the correct side of the fairway or you'll be blocked out by trees. Pace was slow but it was the weekend so no surprise. Good course to practice shaping shots. Greens were good because they hadn't punched like a lot of courses in the area.
Foxtail Golf Club - North Course
Played On 03/01/2015Nice morning round in North Bay
Played at 7:00 am last Sunday and it was cold but clear. Course is a good test with lots of variety (trees, water, bunkers). Nothing funky or tricked up about this course. Greens were in great shape (fast and smooth) so don't get above the hole or 3 putt is almost given. Pace was decent not horrible. 4some in front seemed like they were struggling on the water holes but moved along ok. Saw a couple of marshals but they just waved and drove on. Good value for weekend rate ($50 with cart on GN). Would definitely play again. Never tried the South but might do that next time.
