UNC Finley Golf Course
Played On 11/11/2016One of the best in the Triangle
Course was in excellent shape with the greens rolling great. Finley has a great mix of holes that need just about every club in the bag to navigate and lots to think about on the tee and with approach shots. A little crowded but got around in 4:30 - not too bad. This is a top course in the triangle area and a must play - also among the more affordable among the college courses.
The Golf Club at Chapel Ridge
Played On 08/23/2016Great course - golfnow needs to update info
Had a great time at Chapel Ridge - course layout is challenging, good mix of holes requiring distance and precision, and everything was in good shape. Pace of play was excellent - under 3 hours.
Only issue was that the course only had 9 holes open and those were aerated greens. Not a big deal - course maintenance has to happen - but booked through golfnow and they had nothing indicating that was the case. Pro shop attendant had clearly been getting a lot of grief from people not aware of that. A minor annoyance overall for a beautiful course that played fast.
Country Club Of Johnston County
Played On 05/02/2016Great layout, friendly staff and patrons
Can't say enough about this course - only wish it were 15 minutes closer to Raleigh so I could go more often. Well-thought-out layout with lots of holes where driver may not be the right club off the tee - fun to have to think your way through a hole rather than just swing away. Not especially long but the par 3's are beasts - 2 were over 200 yards from the back tees on a course where the tips are barely 6000 yards. Pretty tight fairways but not especially penalizing to miss them. Greens were freshly punched and sanded when I played so putting was hit-or-miss, but I can see they'd be very challenging when rolling true. Overall a great day, and I can't wait to go back.
Crooked Creek Golf Club
Played On 04/03/2015Starting to feel like they're not maintaining it
I've played here many times in the past and it seems like it has really not come out of winter well. With so many other courses around with newer greens or at least better maintained greens, seeing the patchy weeds and spotty grass on many of theirs was disappointing, especially for the price. I know it is being sold this summer, but I guess I expected more. This was likely my last round here assuming it sells as planned.
Lonnie Poole Golf Course at North Carolina State University
Played On 01/06/2015One of the best in the RTP area
This was my second time around Lonnie Poole and it was a real pleasure. Previous round was marred by slow play that left us unable to finish, but less crowds this time let us get done in about 3:40. This course is designed well - the hard holes are very long and very difficult but there are scoring opportunities too if you can take advantage of them. I am typically happy breaking 100 so by no means an expert, but breaking 90 out here is within reach for me if I played smarter than I did today (lay up, dummy!). Greens are fast but fair, and staff is all great. Pricey normally but with a hot deal a great value, especially as it is so centrally located for the Raleigh area.
The Preserve at Jordan Lake Golf Club
Played On 10/29/2014Beautiful course, challenging for first timers
What a beautiful course. Relatively easy par 3's countered with long, challenging 4's and 5's with narrow landing areas on most drives with bunkers throughout. Course and greens were in amazing condition, and according to all staff we spoke to the greens were as fast as they'll be all year, which was little comfort for all the puts that rolled by the hole. I won't lie, this course beat me up, and I had a lot of tough decisions to make on second shots about playing smart and laying up (even on some par 4's!) but I loved every minute of it. Barely saw anyone the whole time, even playing as a twosome. A 4:15 round even with a stop to pick up a sandwich and a beer at the turn. One of the best and toughest courses I have played in the Triangle area.
Lochmere Golf Club
Played On 11/11/2013Pleasant Morning round - slower than expected
I have played Lochmere several times and enjoy it. In terms of course design it has several holes where hazards aren't always visible from where they would be in play but that is part of learning any course. A good mix of length and challenges throughout the course. I was out with three others for an 8 AM time and had a slow round - the combination of a frost delay and a tournament being staged that day at the course really slowed things down. Staff was great, course played very well, but I wish they wouldn't post golfnow times for 20 minutes before the tournament starts.
Pine Hollow Golf Course
Played On 11/8/2013Wish I had been playing it sooner!
I really enjoyed my round at Pine Hollow - for me it goes on the list with river Ridge and The Neuse of my go-to courses. I was a little intimidated by the length of the course from the scorecard (not an especially long hitter) but ended up enjoying the challenge. Lots of water to contend with on the first few holes, but wide fairways and soft greens helped. I found the course really enjoyable to manage my way through - very mentally stimulating. The free range balls and nice putting and short game areas were great as well - always nice to be able to warm up before the round. While it was not a big concern of mine you can't hit driver on the practice range. Only issue was it seemed like the course got pretty backed up - several slow groups ahead meant playing through really had no point. I will definitely be back!
River Ridge Golf Club
Played On 6/16/2013Wondereful course
Every part of the round was a pleasant surprise. Staff was super friendly, and being able to warm up on the range, chipping green and putting green all right there was great, and a rarity to be included in these discount rates. The starter kept things moving right along - On a Sunday afternoon we never saw anyone either ahead or behind us. Course was in great shape and playing from the whites was challenging but not intimidating.
Wil-Mar Golf Club
Played On 3/14/2013Improved from my last visit
I played Wil-Mar about a year ago and the course has improved quite a bit since then. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, and the course has a good mix of challenges and hole designs. The course was very well maintained, especially the greens. I would guess it would be on the easy side for a low-handicapper, but not being one I am not in a position to say so with any authority. The only negative was pace of play - for a round at noon on a Thursday in March the course was either very crowded (which by the parking lot, it wasn't) or the presence of several large, slow groups was not well-managed. While I was playing by myself I ended up as a foursome just because the course was so backed up it made sense to do so. Not a big issue - after all, 4.5 hours isn't too terrible and if you're out playing golf you obviously have some spare time anyway, but the delays were annoying. I am excited to play it again soon but will not expect a quick round.
The Neuse Golf Club
Played On 2/27/2013Well maintained, friendly staff
While it was just one day after quite a bit of rain, for the most part the course as in good shape. Greens were especially impressive and rolled true. Lots of challenging holes but none that seem un-playable. Staff was to a person very friendly and open to chat. I think the Neuse is the best-maintained and most enjoyable course I have played in Raleigh.
Eagle Ridge Golf Club
Played On 2/2/2013Challenging but fun
A very pretty course, with a good mix of challenging shots and confidence-boosters. Very well maintained, though the green speed was pretty variable in my opinion.
Raleigh Golf Association
Played On 9/27/2012Good value local course
The course was in good shape and never had to wait to tee off. I was able to play 9 holes in under 2 hours. Good location, good value. I'm a novice player so it may lack challenge for players with more experience but I really like the course.
Your feedback is important to us. Thank you for sharing your 5-star experience. We look forward to seeing you again at the course soon! Thanks for choosing Eagle Ridge Golf Club.
