Mississippi Dunes Golf Links
Played On 06/10/2014Unique layout and a good challenge...
I played the course on a near perfect weather day - mid-70's, sunny, and only a slight wind. I had played it previously (three times, I believe), but a number of years ago, and had recollection of only a few holes. This course is a self-proclaimed "replica" course, that recently underwent some renovation to make it more "playable", and the hole sequencing has changed. What did not change, is each nine has three each of par 3's, 4's and 5's, for a par of 72. Only once are two of the same back-to-back (holes 15 and 16 - both par 4's). There are few forced carries, but fairway bunkering, reminiscent of that found in Britain and Ireland, is prominent on many holes, and very much in play. Moderate elevation changes create a number of blind shots, the course plays longer than it's 6500 yards (tips), and shrubbery hides the bail-out, and safe aim-point areas from many tees. Hence my tip about playing with someone who knows the course. The course is well designed, in great shape, and the greens putt true, although they are very undulating, making approach placement crucial. The carts have new state-of-the-art GPS (Visage(?) or something like that) that is the best I've ever encountered. I played from the tips, and rode, which helped to check out blind shots. The course is very natural in appearance, and quite scenic. The staff, before and after the round were very engaging, genuinely glad you came, and interested in your experience. Very refreshing. I consider it to be one of the better public access courses in the Twin Cities metro area (to include the border courses of western Wisconsin), and I've played most of them.
Territory Golf Club
Played On 10/21/2012Enjoyable variety of terrain and shot challenge
Territory is a beautifully designed and very well-maintained course featuring two distinct nines - an open links-style front; and a parkland (7 of nine holes) back. Driver landing areas are somewhat generous throughout, but well-placed bunkers, marshes, ponds, elevation changes, mounding, and various green configurations add to the challenge. From the tips it plays to just under 7,000 yards. Located on the east side of St Cloud, it's not exactly a Twin City metro course, but worth the drive. Great food and service in the busy Coyote Moon Grille after your round.
