Played On 02/17/2024A Good Value for a Good Course
This has become one of my regular courses. For a decent price one can play a course with decent fairways and above average greens. Yes, the 13th green is still in a state of disrepair - and has been for a couple of years! And the tees are uneven and in rough shape. But the fairways have grass (unlike a few courses I have played), and with the exception of the 13th green, the green are above average. I don't want to say too many good things about this course because I don't want it to get too busy! Even the restaurant is pretty good. And the prices are reasonable.

Played On 02/16/2024A Pleasant Surprise!
I booked a 9 hole "round" at this course with minimal expectations. I was pleasantly surprised! Yes, they do have an odd current routing due to 1 hole being closed for maintenance. But they are still 9 holes due to the availability of an extra par 3. Since accuracy is more important than distance at this course, I believe I only hit 2 drivers over the 9 holes. The greens are in good condition, and are bent grass - and faster than most in the Coachella Valley. Stay below the hole to avoid lots of 3-putts. The fairways and tees are average for the area. I will play here again!

Played On 04/25/2022Nice Greens - Everything Else Is Below Average
I kept trying to find things to I like about this course... I did find 2 things... The greens were above average, and the pace of play was great (just over 3 hours on a weekday mid-morning). Now the unfortunate truth... Whoever has given this course 4 or 5 stars for course condition has never played a course in good condition. The condition of the course is 3 stars at best - I gave it 2.
While the greens were nice (overall), the areas around the greens were either hard and dry (with little or no grass) or mushy and wet (with grass). It was the rare green that had nice grass to chip from anywhere near it. The tees were uneven and full of various grasses and weeds. And the fairways were just plain bad. You really couldn't tell the fairways from the rough on many holes. The greenside bunkers were bad (hard) - but that has become almost normal for most courses over the past 2+ years. And while the card says par 70, this course should really be a par 68. (Two of the par 5s are less than 440 yards from the back tees.) An average course - good for a quick round if priced at $30 weekdays and $40 weekends. But NOT worth the $48 I paid for play on a weekday. And definitely not worth driving a hour + to play.

Played On 08/28/2021Prices Going Up - Course Conditions Going Down
The title says it all. I have played this course about 30-40 times over the past 4-5 years. I really like the course layout, and it is close to my home. However, the owners seem intent on trying to make as much money as they can without doing anything to improve the conditions of the course. The fairways and tee boxes have been getting worse every year for the past 5+ years. Most of the steps and pathways to the tee boxes have actually become dangerous - they are so uneven and basically falling apart. Fairways that were once lush green have become hard with tired grass and weeds moving in everywhere. And the gophers are starting to take over in spots. The fairways haven't been aerated in way too long. And the hard dirt traps really need work (they haven't really been sand traps in years). And what do the owners do instead of fixing up the course? They raise their green fees! After raking in money the past year plus and doing the very least they could do for maintenance, now they raised green fees. I haven't played the course since they raised their fees, and I have no plans to go back. Too bad, I do like the course layout. But while the conditions of most courses within 25 miles have improved the past several years, the conditions at this course have declined. And now they are also the most expensive course in the area. Why?

Played On 07/30/2021Champions Course - A Great Layout
This course has a fantastic layout with a great variety of holes. However there were many areas that were over-watered - causing mud-balls on almost every hole! (And I played between 9 AM - 1 PM) The greens rolled ok, but there were far too many unrepaired ball marks to get many true rolls! I could have spent 15 minutes repairing ball marks on every green - and that would have covered about 1/4 of the unrepaired ball marks. A good course - but not 5 stars.

Played On 07/22/2021Good Golf At A Good Price
This is a no-frills inexpensive golf course. The greens rolled very true - although they were also very slow. The sand in the traps was wet and hard as a rock. Not good, but fairly typical during this COVID period. The tee boxes ranged from very nice to very uneven. The fairways were decent - providing good lies most of the time. Overall, the course is a very good value for the money.
Santa Anita Golf Course
Played On 07/17/2021Needs Some Maintenance
Overall I can only give this course a 3 star rating. The good - interesting course layout with healthy kikuyu grass fairways. The bad - the worst sand traps I have seen in a very long time. The sad part is that there does seem to be sand in the traps. All they need to do is to dig down about 2-3 inches and loosen up the existing sand.
Right now, there is about 1/4 inch of loose sand on top of rock hard wet sand. Also bad - the round took over 5 hours (5 hours 5 minutes to be exact). The ugly - greens with dozens of unrepaired ball marks. With a few upgrades this can be a 4-star course.
Marshall Canyon Golf Club
Played On 07/10/2021Deceptively Difficult Course
This course would get 5 stars for the local wildlife - but it isn't a category. The course should be called "Dear Run" since there are dear everywhere on this course. Overall the conditions at the course are between average and good. The fairways seem to be a mixture of grasses - with Kikuyu being predominant in most fairways. This is a public course, so don't expect manicured fairways and thick rough. On many holes you can barely tell the difference between the fairways and the rough. What makes this an interesting and difficult course are the changes in elevation - and the fact that you rarely get a flat lie (even in the fairways). The greens are medium/slow - which is a good thing. If the greens were fast, it would be impossible to stop some putts from above the hole. There are a huge variety of holes from flat and straight holes, to holes with elevation changes and 90 degree doglegs. There are also a couple of risk/reward short par 4s, and a couple of difficult par 3s with elevation changes. I really liked the layout of the course - although the dozens of shallow drainage ditches throughout the course were annoying by the end of the round. If you are not used to playing hilly courses, this course will add 5+ shots to your average score. If you can get through the round with only 1-2 three-putts - you have done well. The only real negative takeaway I had from my round was that it took just over 5 hours! This is about 1/2 hour longer than I would like to spend on any golf course - especially when the temps were in the mid 90s.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course in such details and sharing your thoughts on everything from the course layout to the beautiful wildlife. Thank you for the 4 stars! We aim for a 5-star experience, so we always welcome feedback for improvement such as pace of play. Thank you for playing Marshall Canyon Golf Club.

Played On 07/03/2021A Very Nice & Challenging Course
I can't quite give this course 5 stars - mostly because the course conditions don't quite merit 5 stars. And, the driving range and food/beverage services are actually below average for the area. On the course, the greens were great - but only 4 stars. There were just too many unrepaired ball marks on every single green! The fairways were above average - but not great. The tees were above average, but are beginning to get uneven. Some work needed here. The sand traps were a total mess! A few (maybe 20%) actually had some sand. But most were a mix of wet dirt and gravel! Not good. Overall, the course conditions get 4 stars. But I the course layout is great - with a great variety of holes!
The other reason this course doesn't merit 5 stars is that the overall service was just not very good. The check-in process was slow - even though there was only 1 person in front of me. (Less socialization and more work!) The carts were filthy. They all looked like they hadn't been cleaned in days (weeks?). Garbage and food items were left in the carts from prior golfers. Yuck! And trying to get something to eat and drink after my round was ridiculous! For the first 5 minutes I couldn't find anyone at the food/beverage window. Then after a woman arrived in the food/beverage area I waited another 4-5 minutes for her to finish her conversation with another "worker" before she decided to find out why I was standing at the counter! I know it is tough to find good help, but that was just ridiculous! I should have just walked out - but I was thirsty and hungry. The drink was cold - yea! But the sandwich was not good - probably made hours earlier (dry bread). Definitely not worth waiting for. I will be back because I like the layout of this course. But pretty much every other area could use improvement! For the price, this was only an average value.
Palm Desert Resort Country Club
Played On 11/14/2020Not Worth $75 - This is a $50 Course Max
I wanted to like this course, but conditions are still sub-par. Tees were a mess - uneven with patchy grass. The fairways were a mix of grass, weeds, dirt, and some nice areas. The sand traps were deceptively poor. It looked like there was loose sand, but it was wet and hard just 1 inch below the surface (or less). It was hard to get your club under the ball to hit a "normal" sand shot. Only "chunk and run shots' worked out of the sand. It looks like they are making upgrades to the course. Maybe in a year or two it will be worth what they are charging - but not now. One more annoyance... There was a full 20+ minute wait to tee off on the second nine. This pushed the total time for the round to 4 hours and 45 minutes. Kind of slow.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass on your feedback to the team. Thanks for visiting Palm Desert Resort Country Club, and we hope to see you again in the future.
Oak Quarry Golf Club
Played On 07/11/2020You Don't Get What You Pay For
Everyone has heard the saying "you get what you pay for". In the case of Oak Quarry this is NOT true. This is one of the more expensive golf courses within 50 miles and yet the quality does not equal the price. And the worst part is that the pace of play at this course is consistently well over 5 hours. I gave up and walked off this course after 12 holes took 3 hours and 45 minutes! The previous round took 5 hours and 30 minutes. You could not pay me to play this course again!
Legends Golf Club
Played On 02/01/2020Nice Greens - Everything Else Average
This course has an interesting layout and the greens are in excellent condition. Unfortunately, everything else is in average or worse condition. The fairways are extremely dry, to the point that it felt like I was hitting my approach shots off of worn out driving range mats. Hard as a ROCK. The greenside bunkers were a real variety pack - from nice loose sand, to wet dirt, to hard and dry dirt mixed with rocks! The course was in better shape when I last played it about 2 1/2 years ago. But I do love the layout (a nice variety of holes), and I like the difficult and well kept greens. So I will play here again.
Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon - Champions Course
Played On 09/01/2019A Steady Slide Downhill
I wish I could say some good things about this course. I do love the layouts of both courses. But these courses are gradually going downhill - in almost every area. First, the sand traps (especially green side bunkers) are not sand traps. They are rock hard dirt traps. There hasn't been sand in most of these bunkers for YEARS! Second, the condition of the fairways is average to poor. Many areas of uneven grass. I had several lies in the rough that were better than my fairway lies. Third, the tees are getting more uneven and beat up every year - no upkeep has been done on the tees for decades (since the course opened). And finally the greens... If it weren't for the dozens of un-repaired and improperly repaired ball marks on every green, the greens would be in pretty good shape. Golf courses need maintenance! The courses themselves - not just the club house and the bar/restaurant. Please at least do something with the dirt traps (they are not bunkers)! Add sand maybe? Or actually dig up the dirt - for at least 2 inches. Not just the silly 1/2 inch on top - so that it LOOKS like there is sand (but there isn't). Spend some $ on these courses.
Thank you for taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass along your feedback to the staff so they can work to make changes. Thanks for visiting us!
Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon - Champions Course
Played On 08/10/2019Nice Courses - But the Sand Traps Have No Sand
Both the Legends and Champions courses are great layouts. The greens and fairways of both courses are above average. But the dirt traps are awful - you can't call them sand traps because they have no sand. The lack of sand makes greenside bunker shots nearly impossible. Digging up the dirt was better than nothing, but it still isn't a sand trap without sand.
Rams Hill Golf Club
Played On 03/16/2019One of the Best in Southern California
I have played this course a total of 4 times in the past 3 years. The condition of the greens and fairways has declined from my first 3 visits. This is likely due to the unusual amount of rain this area has received this year. There were areas of several greens that were without grass (possible fungus?). And the fairways were not as lush as in prior years. But overall the course conditions still rated 4+ stars. The sand traps were in great condition, and most of the greens rolled very true (and fast). But given the decline in the condition of the fairways and greens, and can't give this course a 5-star rating for course conditions. And with the course conditions declining a bit, I can't give it 5 stars for value either. BUT, this is still one of the best courses in So CA!

Played On 08/04/2018NIce Course - But Once Again Very Slow Play
I kind of like this course, but since the pace is usually slow, I don't play here very often. Once again, it took over 5 hours to play (5 hours 10 minutes), and that was after teeing off 1/2 hour after our scheduled time. So bottom line, when I expected to be done by 2:30 or 3:00., we didn't actually finish until 4:10 PM. Ridiculous! The condition of the course was nice, but there were dozens of ball marks on the greens - also a regular thing on this course... Good local course, but I won't make the drive again unless there is nothing else available. I am tired of 5+ hour rounds of golf.
Oak Valley Golf Club
Played On 07/04/2018Still Nice - But Not What It Used to Be
I have been playing this course since shortly after it opened. While the greens are still very nice, the rest of the course has slowly deteriorated over the years. The tees are getting uneven, and the sand traps are inconsistent. But the worst part are the fairways. The grass in the fairways is getting thin, with weeds and other types of grass growing in everywhere. There were at least a half dozen times where my ball came to rest in the middle of the fairway, but I had a bad lie. A variety of grasses, weeds, and thin areas create uneven turf conditions - which results in frequent poor lies in the fairways. This is a great layout and could be a 5 star course. And it is still one of the nicest courses in the area. But it needs a cash infusion to bring it back to what it was.
Indian Springs Golf Club
Played On 05/20/2018Nice, But Inconsistent Conditions & Layout
I have always liked this course, but rarely play here because the price is usually about $20-$30 higher than I think it should be. The condition of the course was nice, but definitely not 5 stars. The green-side bunkers were not great - some hard sand, some soft, but all were hard and/or wet less than an inch beneath the top layer. Bottom line, it was very difficult to predict how the ball was going to come out. (And whether or not to use the bounce on your sand wedge.) The greens were nice, but had lots of ball marks. The overall course layout is very odd. It is almost like you are playing 3 or 4 different courses. The course winds through a neighborhood, and some parts of the course were dryer than others. The conditions of the fairways and greens varied depending on which part of the course you are playing. Overall, it is a nice course, but I believe it is overpriced by $20-$40 depending on the time of the year.

Played On 05/12/2018Good Value & Fast Play!
O.K., this isn't a PGA West or Indian Wells course, but it is very good basic golf at a reasonable price. The tees are decent, the fairways are above average, and the greens roll true and are pretty fast! My only complaint is that the greenside traps are a bit inconsistent. But for the price, this is a very nice course. And I played on a Saturday afternoon in less than 2 1/2 hours! I love summer golf in the desert.
